Ok I'm a returning player after 10 years, last played fourth, and I'm going to build a new ork army but I'm really torn over what clan. It's been plaguing me months now lol and I wondered if it would be fluffy to have a complete mix, as in totally intermixed with not even the same clans of orks in same units. Also in painting this would it look too incoherent.

Traditionally, orks don't mix clans in their units but mostly because boyz from each clan used to be fully separate unit entries. Ork tribes are often mixed, though, and armies certainly are so having your top three clans together is outright encouraged.

Personally I've changed my mind a lot on which was my favourite clan throughout the years. Deathskulls, Bad Moons, Snakebites and Blood Axes have all had their time at the top. Nowadays I prefer Blood Axes but mainly because I like the contradiction between typical orkishness and sensible practices such as tactics, camo gear and somewhat standardised vehicles.

They're all pretty amazing. Go with whatever makes the units you want to take look good.

Personally I run a mixed army, but mainly because I run half of the units in the codex and so I can differentiate between squads easily.

There are ways to mix them all. just build a BIG WAAAAAAAAGGHGHH style list. Pretty sure that Ghazzy or a similar warboz recruits from other tribes.

This however might be an issue and would require some careful planning and research.

An Ork Waaaaagh! will consist of many klans. Depending on the Warboss one klan will receive more favouritism then the others but multiple klan will always be present. It's the nature of the Waaaagh! that draws in orks of every kind.

Myself I went with a mix of Goffs, Deathskulls, and Evil Sunz all led by Ghazzy. My Goffs outnumber the other two but I love Deathskulls personally and they get built with all the nice flashy dakka. Between all three I have my assaulters, flankers and gunline.

Incidentally their colours combined is that of being bloody and bruised black and blue.

I was in a similar position a couple of years ago.
I decided to split my collection into the two aspects that I liked best:
an Ork walker/effigy cult, from six kanz and dreddnot, a morkanaut and a stompa, with a converted ghaz into a tall striding war boss mini-gorkanaut if you can imagine it, a bunch bunch grot slaves to the idea zealot style to rush out front and clear the way, hold down the fort and so on.
The other half is Blood Axes, two fat units of Kommandoz, looted Medusa, ordnance flagship battlewagon, orks with 4+ armor, shooty, like that.

If you are in to actual tactics (finkin' and stuff) pick blood axes. They can play any style of game and adjust depending on the circumstances without contradicting the fluff.

Ok thanks guys. It seems everyone agreeshould to some extent its very doable I'll try paint up a couple sqads and throw on some models of different clans and see how it looks

One thing I was thinking would be cool is a deathskul kommando, the idea they aren't infiltrating on a tactical basis just trying to get behind enemy lines to loot from under their noses

Hi, I don't like orks armies with different color schemes. I'd say chose the scheme you like more. Alternatively chose the color scheme that better fits your style of playing.

Mobs of boyz on foot and walkers? Go Goffs

Trukks spam, buggies, stormboyz and bikes? Go Evil Sunz

A big mek themed army? Go Death Skulls

An army that has its bulk in meganobz, nobz or flash gitz? Go Bad Moons

I would say go for different clans in different roles.
Goff = Boys with choppa and slugga
Death Skull = Boys with Shoota
Evil Sunz = Bikes
...

I am building an Ork army right now and can say that it is going to be refreshing to change scheme from time to time due to the shear number of bodies that have to be painted. I think it will also help to easily identify your units battlefield roll at a glance.
To keep a consistency throughout your army, simply keep the basing consistent. That should be enough.

Maybe it's just me, but it kind of feels like when you have a big enough horde of orks you should start diversifying into different clans.

I'm not necessarily talking about at 2000 points, but when you get up to a lot of points. When I had about 2,500 points I had a Goff army of mostly footsloggers with a bunch of walkers, but I also had a small number of bikes and trukks and a looted basilisk. Now that I have more like 6000 points I'm going to have an army of Goffs, an army of Bad Moons and an army of Evil Sunz. Each of these armies are going to be more specialized, with them all coming together for apocalypse games.

Eventually I want to have every clan represented, but I think that's going to be like 20,000 to 30,000 points. It's going to take forever to paint.

I don't think there's a wrong way to do it, as long as you don't do something weird like make all your truck boyz Goffs and all your footsloggers Evil Sunz.

There is only one clan I prefer. It is the Goffs. Nothing brings a tear to my eye than seeing hordes of boyz sloggin' it across the field in one big WAAAGH!

I would just do some research on the Ork clans and pick a couple that appeal to you the most.

That's a neat idea.
Maybe some Blood Axes that trade with Deathskulls.
Looted weapons for teeth, fungus beer, and so on.
So, some Blood Axe units, maybe a looted wagon Blood Axey,
teamed up with some Deathskulls - sounds like a plan!

I recommend starting out with a 500 point army from a single klan and then diversifying as you get to bigger points values. However it is totally fine to have Klans mixed together in a WAARRGH so you can very much go crazy.
I think some Klans are better fits that others though, I can't see traditionalist Snakebites working well with avant-garde Blood Axes or the dour Goffs being happy with ostentatious Bad Moon allies for example.

I recently started collecting again myself and chose to go with Snakebites. It has been a bit of a pain kit-bashing every single slugga boy with WFB Orks but I'm really enjoying the finished product.

I did have an idea of having a mob called 'Da Furreign Legion' which would be boys form all different klans fighting together representing whatever local boys the Nobs could herd together at the time haha!

My Ork army has every Clan represented as a way to differentiate my units, but I suppose during a particularly intense WAAAAGH! there might be mobs so "mobbed up" from losses and regroups so much that their tribe alliance is stronger than their clan alliance during the heat of battle.

Like most Ork disputes go, they will probably fight i out when the real fightins ova.
