Wow, it has been quite a long time since I've done one of these guys. After a long time, I've finally made enough breakthroughs with modelling and painting and such that I'm finally comfortable with resuming work on my various modelling blogs. To start things off, this particular blog is going to be devoted a new regiment I've started, the Kethellan 12th Volunteer Regiment. This is going to be a platoon based artillery regiment. Pictures are spoiler'd because "huge".

Brief Lore:

Spoiler:
A longstanding tradition on the Imperial World of Calais is that of Succession by Conquest. Whenever the planetary governor dies or is otherwise removed from power, the patrons of each of the noble families send their personal armies to fight for supremacy in their name. The family who wins the war earns the title of Planetary Governor, and maintain this position until they die.

The armies are an all volunteer force, though the manner with which soldiers volunteer (or are volunteered) may vary. As a result, the regiments of each noble house are referred to as Volunteer Regiments. To differentiate between the different regiments, they will bear the name of their patron. Even when serving off-world the Volunteer Regiments will keep this name, and are not referred to as Calaisian regiments. Some examples include:

  • “Gelennan Volunteer Regiment” for House von Gelen

  • “Achteron Volunteer Regiment” for House von Achterop

  • “Kethellan Volunteer Regiment” for House von Kethel

  • In addition to the Volunteer Regiments, each family also has a number of Housecarls in their service. Housecarls are an elite honor guard recruited from Volunteer Regiments, and are hardened both physically and emotionally to ensure unflinching loyalty to their patron. The Housecarls do not fear death if it means they can carry out their orders, though they will not needlessly throw away their lives. On the rare occasion that Housecarls are deployed to the battlefield, they are not deployed in great numbers. Furthermore, they answer only to their patron’s orders, and will not listen to lesser commanders unless their orders permit them to. They are usually sent in to accomplish a specific objective, such as assassinating an enemy commander, sabotaging enemy supply caches, or providing relief to an assault force. Independence is greatly encouraged for the Housecarls, and many tend to be competent commanders in their own right. Some named examples of Housecarl detachments include:

  • “6th Kethellan Housecarls”

  • “13th Gelennan Housecarls”

  • “5th Achteron Housecarls”

  • Let's get things started with some of what I've already done. First up is Baron Desmond von Kethel, the patron's 10th son. In-game, he'll count as Creed. First, I started with the Death Korps Company Commander.

    Spoiler:

I already cut off his sword and hand, added a second holster, and greenstuffed the back of his coat.

    Spoiler:

I finished the basic construction by replacing his head with one courtesy of Victoria Miniatures. His hand was a spare hand I had from Mad Robot Miniatures.

    Spoiler:

I later went on to smooth the greenstuff out more, but I don't have a picture of that. I set to work on the command squad soon after. Since I was going to have Creed in my army, I figured it was a good idea to also have Kell. So I converted the old powerfist commissar to have a Victoria Miniatures Regimental Standard in his fist. Conveniently, he has all of Kell's equipment. I also converted the Korpsmen of the command squad to be a medic and a Master of Ordnance. Groin flap and Camo cloak on medic, as well as all of the resin heads and the lasgun, are courtesy of Victoria Miniatures.

    Spoiler:

After waiting for a shipment, I received some sniper rifles from Anvil Industry. Again, groin flaps, cloaks, and heads from Vic minis.

    Spoiler:

After coming up with a color scheme, I decided to do the stupidly smart thing, and make Baron von Kethel my test mini. Here he is fully painted and mounted on a transparent base from Litko.

    Spoiler:

After placing a fairly sizable order with Victoria Miniatures, I currently have 50 guardsmen to assemble. These will be my artillery crews, and as such won't be receiving any special weapons or anything. I also have 2 counts as priests with autoguns to bolster the earthshaker batteries a bit. I used the Victoria Miniatures drummer and some bugler bits to make the priests. The Earthshaker guns are Trumpeter 1/35 German 15cm s.FH 18 Howitzer from ScaleHobbyist. I have 5 unassembled in boxes, enough for 2 batteries of 3 earthshakers. Hilariously, the earthshaker batteries from Forge World can be issued orders.

    Spoiler:

Finally, a project I've been working on behind the scenes for a while. A while ago, my friend gave me a second hand Inquisitor Karamazov model for free. It was in bad shape and missing a few bits, namely the leg guards, a foot, and Karamazov himself. So I gathered some bits and got to work restoring it. I've gotten it to the point where all I need to do is fill some gaps and paint it, and I'm really pleased with how it's turned out so far.
    Spoiler:

I don't have too many pictures of the early WIP stages, but I can summarize what I did. I modified the throne to be more of a podium, replaced the feet with those of a venerable dreadnought, expanded the platforms so the new crew would fit, and modified the triple metla thingy to be a crew-served weapon instead of being integrated with a servitor. The new crew are the "Spanish Inquisition" by Victoria Miniatures. Lovely models, I recommend you get them. The lectern is made of plasticard bits and the old gun servitor and a gak-load of liquid greenstuff. I'll go back now that I've restocked my supply of actual greenstuff and start making things pretty-ish. Hopefully, it'll turn out lovely when painted. I'm confident it will. This is all I've got so far. As I assemble and paint more guardsmen, I'll update this thread. I'll also work on painting my Cadians in my other thread.

After a bit of a hiatus, I binge assembled my 50 guardsmen over the course of a weekend, and have started applying paint to them.

Here's some in-progress shots I took over the course of my odyssey.

First I got up to a small horde.

    Spoiler:

I had an assembly line set up for maximum and efficiency.

    Spoiler:

I got the horde assembled after a couple of late nights.

    Spoiler:

Had a painting day with my brother in law, primed the models and started work on the painting assembly line.

    Spoiler:

My counts as Kell sustained some damage, so I repaired and modified the top of the banner (greenstuffed a cylinder at the top). Primed him and sprayed the flag white and his coat Rhinox Hide.

    Spoiler:

Most recent development is a more focused painting on one of my Company Commanders, Cpt. Arcadia von Tanne, who will be equipped with a power sword and a laspistol.

    Spoiler:

She's not done yet, but the progress is there. Need to do a lot of touching up and additional highlights. OP is updated with additional lore about Calais, and includes information about the elite Housecarl units, which I will be focusing on after I get my crew painted.

8th edition has landed, and I got my grubby mits on the rulebook, Index: Imperium 2, and Imperial Armour - Index: Forces of the Astra Militarum. I was a little dismayed to find that the Master of Ordnance does not currently provide re-rolls for the Heavy Artillery Carriage Battery, and that the aforementioned battery cannot have more than 4 crew per gun. However, I can still issue orders to the batteries, and they seem to have been buffed a bit by the fact that the crew is no longer targetable unless they're closer to the enemy than the gun. Plus, the unit is still cheaper than basilisks.

I mentioned Housecarl units a bit, and I plan on using them in their own detachment, using some Death Korps rules. I'll be running Housecarls as DKOK Grenadiers because some of their orders are pretty rude. Stay tuned on that!

Alright, I'm back! And I actually updated a plog for more than 2 months in a row! Huzzah!

Alright, hot off the presses I've finished the rest of my chain of command. These included 7 company commanders, 2 commissars, and 1 Death Korps Marshal. Without further ado, here they are!

The first models I finished are Lt. Vera van Patton and 2Lt. Volkrad Leighcroft, both counting as Company Commanders with boltguns and power swords.

    Spoiler:

Next is SgM. Rorke Keating, the commander of the Housecarl detachment (Counts as Death Korps Marshal with Hotshot lasgun and chainsword).

    Spoiler:

MSgt. Corbin von Adriaans, who is a company commander with a shotgun and chainsword.

    Spoiler:

MSgt. Simone von Clemens, also a CC with shotgun and chainsword (I have a couple few of them).

    Spoiler:

MSgt. Farra deVen (yet another CC with shotgun/chainsword).

    Spoiler:

SgM. Cass von Angelo, who also has a shotgun and a chainsword.

    Spoiler:

SgM. Drusus von Harlem with a boltgun and chainsword (changing things up, aha!)

    Spoiler:

Finally, we have Gunnery Sergeants Felix Craden and Mira von Calcos, who count as Commissars with boltguns.

    Spoiler:

That's all for now, but I can safely say that in the coming weeks I'll have more to show you all!

Got a small update, I blew a load on ordering some reinforcements, so expect to see some stuff crop up here and there. Needless to say, I have a lot of models I can work on in my free time now.

The most notable progress I have is on heavy weapons. I picked up 3 heavy bolters from Vic Minis, as well as 6 heavy mortars. Currently, I've assembled 2 of the heavy bolters (super easy, lovely kits), and I'm still working on one of the heavy mortars. It's got some small parts which I'm not looking forward to, but aside from that little issue it should be easy enough.

    Spoiler:

I also have a WIP of the first of my Deathrider detachment, or in this case my "Housecarl Cavalry". Vic Minis bits are used for the rider, and the horses are GW Chaos marauder horses. They'll have to be de-chaosified, of course. Being a history nerd, I'm admittedly a pretty big fan of Winged Hussars, so I decided to make the Housecarl cavalry inspired by them courtesy of the Hussar Wings by Trolls under the Bridge. These bits required some modification, but they fit pretty well once you get them on there. The fragility of some of the bits in this army is inspiring me to want to look at transport options that aren't the old GW cases. I'm currently eyeballing the Sabol Designs stuff, especially the Motor Pool.

    Spoiler:

That's all I've got for now, I've got a lot on my plate. Like I said, it's a small update. I'll be aiming at finishing my counts-as Kell at long last, not super satisfied with how it's coming out but It's better than my previous stuff at least. It should turn out pretty good if the custom decals decide to cooperate. Stay tuned!

A new dawn, a new day!

    35 of them! Woooooooo classes...

Anyways, now that I'm no longer suffering, I finally have some progress! Got some lascannons in, and I've also gotten my grubby paws on the "Astra Militarum" codex. For the sake of giggles, I decided that due to my vision of Kethellan lore (and also due to color scheme hurr hurr), I would run them using the Vostroyan regimental doctrines. After all, everyone could use an extra six inches every once in a while.

Now, first things first, I did a little extra work on heavy weapons. Got all 3 heavy bolters up and running, and received a couple of Vic's awesome lascannons. I still haven't gotten around to finishing the rest of my heavy mortars, but I can safely blame classes for that.

Here's the group photo of the heavy weapons family! It hasn't changed much, but it's something. Vic Minis' lascannons are really lovely models, I highly recommend them.

    Spoiler:

They're super easy to put together too, although I admittedly made the same mistake on all 3 of my heavy bolters before I realized with the lascannons what exactly I was supposed to do.

    Spoiler:

Look at the lascannon on the left vs the bolter on the right. You see the peg that the lascannon has that the heavy bolter doesn't?

Don't. Clip it. Ever. It sits in a slot that holds the rear up. When I was working on the heavy bolters, I thought that it was supposed to rest all the way in the hole, so I clipped it to fit. On all three.

    Learn from my mistakes!

Next up is the veteran squad!

The choice between veterans and scions is an...interesting one, to say in the least. However, what I ultimately decided is that since I'm going to be running Housecarls in another detachment, I don't really need scions, when you really think about it. Plus, I needed something that veterans are definitely capable of that scions are not. Fire support. Scions are great for offensive capabilities, don't get me wrong, but it would be really nice to have BS3+ heavy weapons and such. Being able to benefit from the Vostroyan doctrine is a nice plus as well!

    Spoiler:

Here's a rather awful photo showing the initial progress I made on the veteran squad. My plan is to have a heavy flamer for slight area denial and charge discouragement, 3 plasmaguns for fun times, and a lascannon for super fun times. I am repurposing some of my already assembled models for use in the veteran squad because I'm creative, and I added backpacks using some bits I received from Vic Minis, as well as some stuff I just had lying around. My plan was to originally have 2 conscripts squads, but I figured 1 conscript squad and 2 veteran squads would probably be better.

    Spoiler:

    Spoiler:

The most recent development is of my first veteran sergeant, armed with a boltgun and power sword. The boltgun is some Raven Guard boltgun from Forge World that I forget the actual pattern name of. The power sword is a Vic Minis power sword because they're awesome. I sliced off the Raven Guard logo and covered up the lack of detail with a Vic Minis ammo pouch. Overall, pretty happy with how the model came out and I can't wait to paint it.

Since my classes are out, I'm going to be doing a lot of work on my models in these coming months, so look forward to that! I'll also probably start on painting at some point in the near future, starting with the veteran squad whenever its assembled.

What's this? Another update in the same week? Surely I must be crazy or sick in the head or something!

Sick in the head? No. Sick? Yes.

Anyways, to the order of business. Fact: Baron Desmond von Kethel was meant to serve as a "counts-as" Creed. Fact: SgM. Reid van Hayden was meant to serve as a stand-in for Kell. Complicated fact: I plan on running Vostroyans.

So since I can't run Creed and Kell in a Vostroyan list, what exactly can I do? Adapt.

I need to make a company commander that is pretty awesome. But not just regular awesome...warlord awesome. So how do I accomplish that?

First things first, I have to accept that I'm not going to be able to have 2 pistols on my warlord. That pretty much throws out the Creed conversion I've already done because of wargear options. That means my warlord, for maximum awesome, needs to have a pistol and a sword. Specifically, probably a plasma pistol and a sword. So where does that leave me, conversion wise?

    Right back at the beginning.

    Spoiler:

Here's a Death Korps Company Commander with his head lopped off.

    Spoiler:

Here's the hole for giving him a new head, courtesy of Vic Minis.

    Spoiler:

Behold, the new and improved Baron Desmond von Kethel! This time, with a pistol and sword instead of two pistols and an invisible sword!

Now I just need to paint him to match the Creed version of him...

    Awaaaaaay!!!

P.S. Don't remember if I mentioned it, but the "ooh super fluffy" name for my counts-as Kell is SgM. Reid van Hayden, and no changes are going to be made to his model because Lord Commissars get a morale buff similar to (if not better than) Kell's regimental standard, so I'm going to run him as a Lord Commissar. Furthermore, Lord Commissars can take two melee weapons. Checkmate, heretics!

Also, speaking of Commissars, as far as Commissars go in my army, my opponents and I are agreeing to use this house rule in future games, because the FAQ version of Summary Execution sucks:

Summary Execution: ASTRA MILITARUM units of up to
10 models within 6” of a friendly COMMISSAR can never
lose more than one model as a result of any single failed
Morale test. The first time an ASTRA MILITARUM unit of
more than 10 models fails a Morale test during the Morale
phase whilst it is within 6" of any friendly COMMISSAR,
one model of your choice in that unit may be slain for the
Morale test to be re-rolled (do not include this slain model
    when re-rolling the Morale test).

I will be getting back into the swing of things, hopefully. This army's looking less intimidating for me to take on, especially since I have some non-clogged superglue.

I'll be focusing on the tanks for the near future, as well as some of my Necromunda models. I will, however, be figuring out what I was going to be doing with my Kethellans and get back to working on them. I'm thinking I'll start with the veteran squads.
    [Thumb - Completed tank.jpg]
So I backed the Mortian Heavy Battle tanks and got this assembled.

    [Thumb - old treads.jpg]
Unfortunately, I messed up the tracks. Spot the mistake?

    [Thumb - new treads.jpg]
Should look more like this. Went back and did some triage, should get it right in the future.

Got some 1/4" magnets for weapon options.

Sculpted a lower torso for my tank commander, Captain Inessa! AKA Indomitus Actual!

[Thumb - armored prayer glamor shot.jpg]
And a bit of a glamor shot. If anyone else has these tanks and needs assembly advice, let me know! I've got 6 more to assemble, and can post a guide.

Well I'll be , another post by yours truly within a year? Gasp!

I finally have an area to set up a proper assembly line with plenty of room, so I figured it's time to get started on these models so they don't collect dust.

Here's my setup, which includes a handy dandy list of what I actually need to assemble, squad-wise.

    Spoiler:

It's important to actually know what you're doing, otherwise you'll look at all of those parts of guardsmen (and women, 2018 y'all) and just go crosseyed. And speaking of guardsmen, I've completed my two veteran squads!

    Spoiler:

Basic loadout of each squad is a Sergeant with power sword and boltgun, 3 plasma guns, a heavy flamer, and a lascannon. If you're unfamiliar with the Imperial Guard, yes, veterans can have all that kit. It helps the foe better see the righteous path, and accept the Emperor's Light.

I think I've already shown you guys the first veteran squad, or parts of it, so I will focus on the second squad.

    Spoiler:

As you can probably tell, I've incorporated some models from the initial human wave, as most of those were initially planned to be arty crew. Problem is, arty crews can't be as big as they could in 7th, so I had a ton of extra guys lying around. No worries though!

    Spoiler:

Here's the sergeant, name pending. As you can tell by the air bubble in his foot, I have some green-stuffing to do. That's no problem though, I've dealt with worse issues over the course of this army that I won't elaborate on. I shall overcome!

    Spoiler:

Special weapons from both squads, 1st squad on the left, 2nd squad on the right. 2 heavy flamers, 6 plasmagunners. These guys have proven themselves in a battle that I am pretty sure I posted about previously, but that was when I was using some Cadians to fill in the gaps. They will earn proper glory now!

I will be focusing on infantry and armour for the most part over the coming months. The cavalry will be the last things I work on due to how much work I have to do on them, but it should hopefully be worth it. The arty will also wait until after the infantry, because those are pretty grueling.

Until then, I will keep you guys posted on my progress!

But that's not all! I realized that if I didn't make the right decisions, this army might not even get to an unpainted-but-playable state. So, I decided to continue the general theme of the army and order some...heavy artillery...courtesy of Vic Minis!

Ah, but wait! That's still not all!

I have acquired some lovely minis from Artel W which, after mutilating them a bit, have been properly converted to fit in with the rest of the army. Following some greenstuff work (which will be done in the future), will serve as my new command staff. On the far left, is the new and improved Baron von Kethel! I look forward to seeing the models painted, although it will certainly take some time.

    Spoiler:

I'm hoping to have some painting done in the next few...weeks?

    Let's be real here. Months.

Also, thanks to Vic's $50 free mini deal, I have...acquired...a few missile launcher teams. In addition, since the arty came with its own crew, I have roughly ~24 extra guardsmen to work with. Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

By the way, does anyone know of good 28mm horses that are heavily armored and would suit the appearance of my Winged Hussars? I've decided that the massive effort to de-chaosify the horses is a bit...

Plus, faster horse prep, means faster Winged Hussars. And faster Winged Hussars means...more...Winged Hussars.

    Avast! Another update!

I made some progress on my artillery batteries, and managed to get 5/6 guns assembled!

    Spoiler:

The guns themselves are suuuuper easy to assemble, but the crew are Reaper Bones material, and can be a bit of an adventure to work with. They are super durable because of how soft the Bones material is. They're quite pliable, and I have full confidence you could load one in a slingshot and hit it against the wall and it'd be totally fine. However, some of these parts are prone to warping, in particular the guy with the range finder.

    Spoiler:

    This guy.

One of the issues this crewman has is the part on the range finder you look through. You can see how long it is in the previous picture, but in this picture I show you the lack of detail on the eye-piece. personally, I suspect some kind of issue with the mold, but I can't be sure. No matter, we're going to fix it up real good.

    Spoiler:

As you can see in this picture, in its unmodified state, it simply doesn't fit up against the crewman's eyes. Warning: Pic is HUGE.

    Spoiler:

You may also notice it doesn't fit particularly well on the little pegs. Some field modifications are in order!

    Spoiler:

Also trimmed the protruding part of the eye piece so it'll fit better.

    Spoiler:

If you have parts that are very warped, you can use an insta-hot unit to warm the bones material up and bend it to a more correct shape. This also firms up the bones a bit, so if you have an issue with it being soft, heat it up and cool it down.

This one was warped only slightly. Others were more extreme.

    Spoiler:

Ran it under the insta-hot, and then under cold water, and straightened it up more. I'll probably need to hit it again because I wasn't bending it as much as I should have.

    Spoiler:

    Eye piece fits better too!

    Spoiler:

Now I just need to fini-...oh look the batteries are done. That was fast!

I must admit, I am a bit tempted to get a third battery...

    EDIT:

I actually totally forgot! I also painted up one of the field guns, doing a bit of a test scheme and practicing the weathering I'm planning on using!

I think it came out pretty well, and I learned quite a bit from this practice piece! I'll probably ease up on the drybrush for the metal cuz I think the grey works better for wear and tear, but overall I'm really happy with how it came out. Some folks think it's a little overboard, but others have talked about how they've seen tanks in a combat environment with even more wear and tear on it. I based a lot of it off of Miguel Jimenez's F.A.Q.: Frequently Asked Questions on AFV Painting Techniques.

Something I was also skeptical of was using a tan color as the primary color for my artillery and field guns, but after seeing how the test piece came out, I'm less hesitant about it.

    That's the one.

Whatever happened to your German howitzers? I clicked the link and I have to admit that at roughly half the retail price of a Basilisk in Canada, I'm extremely tempted by them.

I decided not to use them because they were veeeeeeeery tedious to assemble with a lot of small parts. In addition, they weren't super durable, and had already sustained some significant damage in previous transits. Plus, the Vic Minis guns look better, and I've wanted them for a while, soooooo...

Wew, it's a good thing I didn't put an estimate as to when I'd have more things done in my last post. Having that sort of guess is setting myself up for failure .

Anyways, boy do I have a bit of a backlog. Not much of one, but enough. Let's get started!

The first order of business is probably my most asked question, so prevalent that I even started asking it myself.

    "What about the Winged Hussars?"

Lemme tell you about them Winged Hussars...

They're coming. I've got everything I need and decided that the horses I was using were too much of a pain in the to try to dechaosify, so I decided to get some Perry ACW horses, which came with nifty swords.

    Spoiler:

Unlike my previous test model, this one is actually glued because it's no longer a test model. It's a model. 9 to go.

I also decided to take a side-step from my main army a bit and add a support detachment of airborne. Lore snippet is as follows:

    Spoiler:
    Hive-state Vandermeer

Situated in a mountainous region, the hive-state Vandermeer has remained largely independent from the politics of Calais, particularly the wars of succession. The hive has no desire to instate their own planetary governor, though they have historically thrown their military support behind the perceived victor of political succession. Their support is always welcome, due to the fact they produce highly disciplined soldiers. Moreover, Vandermeer is the only hive that actively produces plasma weaponry on Calais, which they sell at a flat rate to all buyers. Naturally, this manufacturing capacity proves to be powerful leverage in the political landscape of Calais, and the hive has traditionally had a lot of influence over planetary governors because of it.

One of the most notable assets of Vandermeer are an elite formation of airborne infantry known as the Daughters of Vandermeer. Serving dual roles of elite support infantry and weapons advertisements, the Daughters of Vandermeer deploy into battle equipped almost entirely with plasma guns.

I run the Daughters of Vandermeer as Elysian droptroops, and include them in a Vanguard Detachment in my army comprised of 2 company commanders, 1 platoon commander, 1 infantry squad, 2 special weapons squads, and 3 company command squads. The special weapons squads and company command squads are all loaded out with plasmaguns as the lore snippet implies, and the formation is supported by a Vulture gunship (still heavily WIP).

    Spoiler:

Color scheme for the Daughters of Vandermeer will be based off of this magnificent paint scheme. Speaking of, I've been toying around with some Contrast paints that I picked up today. I was unfortunately unable to get all the ones I needed (local store was hit HARD this weekend), but I was able to practice enough with the paints to get a feel for them.

Here are some WIPs from my new and improved command staff (courtesy of ArtelW miniatures, modified to fit with the theme of my army).

    Spoiler:

Notes of...note. Aggaros Dunes makes a great "blonde" color, and Wyldwood makes a fantastic leather base. I will be expanding all of these with the proper highlights for sure, but as a base the Contrast paints are utterly fantastic. I also started working on a test model for the Daughters of Vandermeer.

    Spoiler:

I was unable to do touch up work on the models because the potted base coats were out of stock due to the weekend rush (RIP). I'll be getting all of the missing colors I need when they get back in stock later this week, so I'll probably do more tests when they come in.

For now, that's all I've got. I will be steadily working on squads after I get the rest of my paints in, so that should hopefully work wonderfully. Also, a note: in the test models I did, the male commander has 1 coat of Aggaros Dunes, while the female has 2 coats for a darker look on the fatigues. I'm thinking of doing 2 coats for my army in general, so let me know what you guys think of the look. Again, I will still be doing highlights and all that jazz. Contrast can result in good tabletop quality, but I'm far too anal for mere tabletop quality these days.

Great-looking work on the command staff so far. The Contrast paints seem to be working well for the clothing textures.

Contrast is absolutely fantastic for clothing textures. I did run into an issue on the male commander where I could see brushstrokes in a larger, flatter area, but I fixed it by just slathering more Wyldwood on. I will probably drybrush some red leather in a bit as a test to see how that turns out, since that has historically made some awesome leather for me.

It's a new dawn, and a new update! Within a week, even! I have a good feeling about this, and finally worked out a color scheme I'm happy with. My first official test miniature is largely done. Boltgun is still WIP because I haven't decided what color scheme to do the weapons in, but the rest of him is done aside from some cleanup here and there. Contrast is excellent for faces, and with the grey contrast you can easily add stubble and the like. It's brilliant. That said, I used multiple paints for the skin. Fyreslayer Flesh for the lips and eyes, and Guilliman flesh for the bulk of the actual skin. I'm still not sure what to do with this guy's hair, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Tomorrow, I plan on doing the rest of the squad if the stars are properly aligned.

Here's a shot of the sergeant's face. His coat was pretty messy in this stage, but I later hit it with a light drybrush of Zandri Dust. The pictures don't do it justice, I'm afraid.

    Spoiler:

Some additional shots showing various stages of completion. You will note the cleaner coat in these pictures.

    Spoiler:

My immediate goal is as follows:

    1. decide on a weapon color scheme.
    2. paint the rest of the squad.

I will also likely dirty the armor up a bit, looks a bit too clean for my tastes. The photos also don't show it well enough, but there is shading on the armor. I started with a base of Flesh Tearers Red contrast, layered with Vallejo Flat Red, and drybrushed with Vallejo Red Leather. Leather is my new-usual recipe, Wyldwood with a drybrush of Vallejo Red Leather.

So much for quick updates, but I've been in a bit of a transitional period.

Namely, I finally made a proper workbench for myself.

It features plenty of storage and so-called "specter deflectors"! They are to keep the cat from stealing my stuff off the workbench as he is wont to do.

    Spoiler:

Now for the meat and the bones of the update, I mentioned in a previous post that I may have to pick up another battery of arty. So I did. Twice.

    Spoiler:

Additionally, I've got a bit of heavy armour now, and I 3d printed a custom part to hide a common problem with the Malcador kits.

    Spoiler:

That's all for now! Further updates will be trickling in over many moons!
