So it's all in the title I can get either one of these. But not both so beyond the fact both these would be a better deal around 60$

I really like the miniatures in Forbidden Stars and the busts in Relic. The only thing that really influences the choice is ease of play as the group I play with doesn't play any really complicated games. Both actually look pretty simple to me.

So which would be the better buy?

Forbidden Stars has pretty deep tactics, actually, so I wouldn't say it is all that simple and you can get absolutely wrecked if you aren't paying attention to the way the game plays. Especially in how it differs from many other galactic conquest games. That being said, the rules themselves aren't too complicated either, so if your gang can handle some hours of head scratching in the beginning, I can vouch for that. It is a great game.

Forbidden Stars is good fun, but can be complicated

If your group wants easy go for Relic (basically talisman, but 40k)

Whichever way you go, go quickly. FFG isn't going to be producing any more of either.
Relic is a roll and move game. There are more expansions (2 I think... could be wrong).
Forbidden Stars is a stand alone (sadly). Both would be good depending on your group. I just don't like the randomness of games like Talisman so I have stayed away from Relic.

Well gameplay wise Forbidden Stars is more appealing, if I can get it will (just for those tiny eldar models I love the armorcast mini Titan) and relice if the price stays down I might get it.

What is the randomness of talisman? And can the expa sion work independently of each other because nemesis is so expensive compared to vaults of Terra. Not mention those really cool busts

Haven't played Relic but Forbidden Stars was amazing. It takes FOREVER to play, but we were all so invested in it that there was no chance of us quitting early. My first play-through was with two people who were highly knowledgeable about 40K and the setting, one person who was casually interested, and one person who has played Dawn of War I & II but no other experience. We all got the game really quickly and really got into it.

The ONLY bad thing I can say about it is that it does take a long time. Some people don't like the fact that other players are spectators during each combat, but given that the game takes a long time--those combats are the perfect time to grab a snack or run to the bathroom!

I only regret not buying it sooner.

Forbidden Stars doesn't take that long to play. You want a long game? Play The Colonists.

Also Relic, I'd forgotten which game that was. 40k Talisman. Ug, Talisman. Roll a d6, move that far left or right. Draw a card from the monster deck and fight it. It might be a level one Rat, or it might be a level ten dragon. It's a long and tedious game where you actually have few tactical choices, just random luck. Have not played Relic itself but it's accociation to Talisman will keep me from giving it a chance, which I suppose doesn't matter much now that it's out of print.

Well, long and long. By board game standards it is in the middle weight category, taking maybe 3-4 hours if the players are somewhat competent. I'd imagine it gets a lot quicker when you have a dozen or so matches under your wings. I personally reckon a long game to be something that takes the whole playtime of the evening or even the day, with Forbidden Stars it is entirely possible to play something else too. Twilight Imperium and the like are the long ones, which usually spill over to the next day too.

But hey, as always with games, your mileage may vary.

Forbidden stars only takes a long time the first couple games when everyone is learning, as long as one person knows it well enough to teach it only takes a few hours. Certainly is the more complicated of the two games, but also the more satisfying

I'm a bit biased tho, I fully painted my copy and bought a second one to use the ships in BFG and the tanks for Epic 40K. I LOVE toys and any board games that have a good toy factor are always at the top of my list. Those busts in Relic do nothing for me, I wish they were full figures. Forbidden stars hits that perfectly, and then on top of that the actual gameplay is fething ACE!

I thought the same thing about the ships, after playing the mobile games trial I want to play BFG and being an Eldar fan I love those eldar models one day when I have an Altansar army (waiting till 8th) I want to get an armorcast revenant it's just such a neat model

I did quite enjoy that mobile game..

Was actually really true to the table top.. I was especially surprised that they managed to pull off Tyranids so well, considering they are maybe the most complicated army to play
