Greetings! I'm Hana, and I am full of wide-eyed wonder and clueless "nod and smile"ing. I've been dragged into the 40K hobby by my BFF who is building a Chaos Marine army with the agreement that I will play with him as long as he allows me to mod & paint his army as well as mine. I played like...twice 12 years ago and was apathetic on the play but loved modding and painting back then (but was very rudimentary at it), and I've been painting D&D minis for...a minute or two.

Here is the list of what I know/assume:
  • There are points and things cost points, and it is best to build a modular army based on the points once I have my Codex.

  • Have d6s. Not sure how many.

  • Eldar are purty.

  • Nids are ewww.

  • Necrons Don't Stay Down.

  • Big things are expensive, but are pretty.

  • Chaos bad.

  • Slaanesh extra bad.

  • Ynnead good.

  • GW does not make female Farseers, wtf?

  • Anything with the word Wraith is ghost-powr'd.

  • I should get tiny magnets.

  • I'm working on a mod for my custom female Farseer at the moment, and my BFF just got me some, um...Guardians, I think? Little crunchy(?) guys who are not dead. I'm working on writing up my own Craftworld stuff, because I don't like being put in a box and I wanna do my own colors. So, yeah....

    Hi.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka, and the hobby in general! You can ask painting and modeling questions in the painting and modeling section (dur ) and rules questions in the regular 40k section.

I would advise reading through your Codex for Eldar and the main rulebook before you play anything, really. If you don't own those, borrow from a friend or peruse at a local gaming shop. It might not be the best time to get into the hobby for gaming, since 8th edition is just around the corner, but painting and modeling is always good!

Yeah, we were planning on picking up our codices this weekend, 'cause they were out of stock at our FLGS when we went on Saturday.

When you say just around the corner, how soon do you mean?

    Automatically Appended Next Post:
I went googling and answered my own question. Looks like June is the most likely release date. I will discuss with BFF about whether he wants to buy the 7th codices with the looming 8th release.

But not having a codex will leave me in a lurch on what to buy and paint in the meantime, so...Full cost/benefit analysis is necessary.

We can give you advice on what to buy. That being said, as of right now, Eldar are in a supremely good position. You can by the poopiest units and still do well.

    That's good...as I 100% picked them because I think the units/vehicles are pretty, ehehehe.

That's exactly what my local GW's manager says. Pick it based on what you like the look of-rules change. Models don't (as fast).

I am glad that I achieved the humor I was aiming for. ^_~

The aesthetic I'm going for is dawn-inspired, so all the armor will be a navy-to-sky-blue gradient, and then all the helmets will be orange-and-pink, with little accents that herald back to other things, like for the Aspect Warriors and stuff. I'm hoping to be able to cut my own custom decals for the vehicles and robots and stuff, and I think we're investing in an airbrush this weekend (which will hopefully make gradient painting not take 5ever anymore)

I like the way they're coming out. Quick question-is that a Wraithlord, or a Wraithknight? Cause it looks big for a Lord.

Edit: Or maybe I'm just bad at sizes. I dunno.

I think the Wraithlord is the little one and the Wraithknight is the big one. Which is kind of confusing.

I'm a long time Chaos Player but i've been dabbling in Eldar. Still trying to figure out a craftworld, and approach. Other then the fact I like jetbikes, so naturally i'm leaning towards Saim-Haim.

I've sold so many armies. :(

You could always be totally Mary Sue like me and make your own craftworld, but then you need to be good at freehanding runes or have a way to make your own custom stuff. I'm a spoiled craft brat who has a vinyl cutting machine, so I can make my own stencils.

Honestly, considering how Stue-ish some of the Spice Maroons are...

Just don't go overboard when making your own Craftworld. Major props if you actually write your own fluff for it!

I may have already written some prequel stuff for it. It's suppoed to be a very new Craftworld....that basically grew from a story I'm writing about the Farseer I'm making.

Well I'll read it if you want, but be warned, I don't take well to Timmy's first OC. And just like everyone else on this goddamned site, you have a post about your 'first few models' and it's already light-years ahead of my first models in quality.

Well, to be fair, I've been painting D&D minis for a minute or two, so I'm coming to the table with at least a basic skillset already in place.

And there's very little way I could get immersed in the sausage party that is 40K without making an OC. There's, like, 3 named female Eldar, and one's in a video game and doesn't have a model. (In case it wasn't glaringly obvious, I'm exceedingly female.)

Yeah, I picked up on that. You speak (type?) in a distinctly different way to the rest of us in this, as you so aptly put it, 'sausage party'. I'd recommend just staying in the P&M section, because we're pretty chill. You go into say, 40k background, and try to propose any idea, you're gonna get yelled at (people will type at you in all caps) or told how dumb you/your idea are.

Marines and Eldar recently have broken Suedum to all time highs. Heh.

Also, I've seen someone make a Farseer Macha out of a High Elf kit, a fem Guardian torso and various Eldar bitz. I wish I had a picture of it. It was 100% plastic, this being back in early 5th when a vast number of models were still metal. And just was pretty to look at.

I think that was one of the mods that I came across when I was initially brewing my idea for my female Farseer. I went with a Bones mini as my base, and cannibalized an actual Farseer for parts in addition to a little greenstuff cloth work. I've still got to duplicate one of the little bits (or get another farseer to grab the thingy off) for her shoulder whatsits, and put the spear arm on after I get the rest of her painted. She's going to have the helmet be at her feet, and I'm going to magnetize her so she can be either on her own base, or the same base as the Wraithlord (for display purposes).

Oh, yeah, I'm far to old to think anyone is actually going to LIKE my ideas, lol. I just had to come up with something to make the massive amounts of stuff I had to learn be fun for me. I'm up for reading it to. I generally put together a little fluff and story for my own projects but not a full on story.

My eldar (in my sig) just got a few paragraphs to explain them. My thinking is, infinite universe you can't *technically* be wrong with your story.
If anyone tells you you've got things wrong, just say your own people don't know all their history and some of it is guesswork ;D

    Welcome to Dakka!

Liking the premise and work done so far. I'm currently painting (slowly) on some Harelquins for my wife to use in Kill Team & Shadow War Armageddon. She likes the Eldar aesthetic and the colorful palettes available to the Harleys, so it's win/win.

I suggest that, for the time being, you work on you HQ + Wraithlord and Guardians. Even if 8th comes in during June like it's expected it will, those core units will likely still be both viable and effective. Your army must have an Headquarters (HQ) choice and Troops choices (Guardians) at it's core. Just keep working on those. Also, while the Wraithlord is not the most optimal Heavy Support choice, it is still a solid one in my opinion and worth running.

Best of luck, and I hope you and your BFF enjoy the game once you get into it more. If you have questions please don't hesitate to ask. Most folks here are friendly and happy to lend aid when requested.

    Take it easy for now.

Don't be afraid of proposing new background - while some people will be harsh, you can often get good constructive feedback from that particular forum.

I for one would like to see this fluff if you ever decide to put it up here. Creativity's the lifeblood of the hobby after all! (plus I'd be a hypocrite for criticising romance when some of my own 40k lore has it in )

Oh yeah, welcome to Dakka too
