In the Warp, getting trolled by Tactical_Spam, AKA TZEENTCH INCARNATE

I’ve come to the conclusion that trying to keep +5 P&M threads updated with some consistency is an exercise in futility, so I’ve decided to bring everything back to one single thread (which will hopefully get updated more regularly).

Under this little blurb you’ll find all my wargaming projects, ranging from big army projects to small squads and warbands. I’ll try to keep said list updated with the most recent progress I’ve made for every project.

Current projects:

Warhammer 40k:
The Remnants – True Scale Chaos Space Marines
Death Ravens – Working on Assault Marines
Da Ruff Ridaz – Kit-Bashing a Dakkajet

Warhammer Age of Sigmar:
The Kingdom of the Broken Chains – Mortarch waiting assembly
Yet-to-be-named Host of Slaanesh – Start Collecting box arrived!
Warhammer Quest Kit-Bashed Heroes – all Heroes built!

Horus Heresy:
Army of Dark Compliance (Militia and Word Bearers) – Word Bearers Tartaros Terminators (nearly completed)

INQ28:
Tyrant’s Own – Glued and ready for painting
Wolffe’s Crew – Kit-bashed Mercenaries, the best kind of Mercenaries! Ready to paint, too!
Secreta Secretorum Strike Team – Orionos build complete
Inquisitior Lobov and Retinue – Too many models, too little glue!

As you can probably tell, I may have a bit of a problem when it comes to plastic crack…

For those of you who have followed my blogs in the past, welcome back! For those who have had the misfortune of ending up here by chance, I hope that my ramblings will be entertaining enough to read, and my painting nice enough to look at!

Now, let’s get to work!

I’ve been doing a lot of different things the past few weeks due to the dreaded hobby-butterfly syndrome (must have something to do with spring coming around), which means I’ve got a ton of updates to get through. I’ll try to follow the aforementioned list as much as possible to keep some measure of consistency throughout the thread

First up, Warhammer 40k!

The Remnants – Fallen Angel finished

Another Remnant takes to the field, this time an infamous Fallen Angel named Galgar. Galgar’s part of the first few CSM’s I converted way back when I first started this army, so I’m glad to see the original crew getting one step closer to completion!

Spoiler:

I wrote him a little background blurb in my CSM thread, which should give you an idea of what his character is like:

Of all members of The Remnants, Galgar is the most boastful about his origins, which is a rarity amongst the group of forgotten and betrayed marines that forms the core of the warband. Once a Dark Angel, he was sent back to Caliban alongside Luther and his Terran-born brethren, where he took part in the great battle that reduced said planet to a single spaceworthy rock. To this day he claims that it was his Primarch who fell to Chaos, and that he and his brothers were, and had always been, loyal to the Imperium in every way.
Of course, not a single soul in the warband believes his story, for those who have seen him in combat know him to be a sadistic butcher, taunting his enemies even as he disembowels them with his sword. Arrogant to the point it aggravates even the Slaanesh-worshippers in the warband, yet strategically gifted enough that his leadership is grudgingly accepted by those under his command. He tends to lead by example, although that's more because he enjoys murdering people rather than to inspire his comrades.

On to Warhammer: Age of Sigmar!

Warhammer Quest Kit-Bashed Heroes – all Heroes built!

The release of the Warhammer Quest games inspired me to build my own set of Heroes and Villains, converted and kitbashed from the AOS/WHFB bits I've collected the past few months. Here's a few pics of them (the pics aren't great sadly; I'll retake them soon):

The obligatory Stormcast Eternal, built from the freebie SE that came with that magazine-thingie and some Empire General bits.

A Freeguild General. I extended his torso a bit, as I felt it was a little bit too short. Also gave him a cloak, because cloaks are rad.

Skaven! Lovely little buggers. I converted these from the Plagueclaw's crew.

A repaint of an old Dwarf model....

And one of an old Night Goblin.

And then, Heresy happened…

Army of Dark Compliance (Militia and Word Bearers) – Heresy unfolds…

This army was a bit of an accident, really. The first step towards damnati-, I mean, this army idea, was me buying a cheap model tank kit from Grafix because it was A. cheap and B. looked as if it would be easy enough to convert. After some deliberation, I turned it into a Leman Russ Annihilator, as you can see here:

Problem was that I now had a tank, but no army to go with it. I suppose I could have done a more sensible thing like using it in an allied detachment for one of my WH40k armies, but clearly the Eye of Horus I’d attached to its side was corrupting my thoughts without me even realizing it. A few weeks later, I stumbled across the Imperials Militia and Cults rules whilst surfing the interwebs, and thought: Hey! I’ve got some old IG guys from over a decade ago, maybe I can put them to good use! So I dug up my old squad of Cadians and the odd few Vostroyans I’d bought Emperor-knows-when, and put my mind to work…

And so the Warmaster’s will was done; a Horus Heresy ‘army’ was born! (more like an allied detachment, but whatever)

Deciding a colour scheme was easy enough, as Great Crusade-era Imperial Armymen look a lot like Vostroyans (or at least, according to some of the artwork floating around the internet). I tested the scheme on some of the Cadians, to see if it would look as good on them as it did on the Vostroyans:

Works pretty well, in my opinion Originally, their weapons were going to be painted black, but I went for grey in the end. I think I’ll be painting the army’s tanks grey as well.

And so the 41st Retrograd Front was born!

But then I read the rules for an Army of Dark Compliance… and things got a bit out of hand

Because now I could not only re-use some of my old models (and revamp them in the process), but also dabble in the Horus Heresy range without having to sell a kidney!

Of course, then came the problem of picking a Legion… originally, I was going to go for the Sons of Horus, because, y’know, the Warmaster’s Due and all that, but ultimately I decided to go for the Word Bearers. Because at this point I’ve come to accept that I can never truly escape the clutches of Chaos, not even in a setting where only one Legion out of eighteen is actually worshipping Chaos.

That laughter you hear in the background is Kernelterror’s, by the way. He’s seen this happen to me far too many times in far too many threads already.

So now I’ll also be working on some Word Bearers. I’ve ordered a set of five Tartaros terminators to defile for the Dark Gods, and I’ve been experimenting with their colour scheme a bit. Behold my Photoshop-magicks!

I’m not 100% sure about this scheme, so I’ll be posting some alternatives in the future.

And lastly, there’s a few updates on the INQ 28 front as well!

Wolffe’s Crew – Kit-bashed Mercenaries, the best kind of Mercenaries!

I was feeling particularly inspired one day and set out to do something I hadn't really done before: create a model from truly 'random' parts. My first attempt ended in the creation of a character I've dubbed 'Wolffe', a skilled mercenary who leads a bunch of misfits in a Necromunda-esque place.

Wolffe's truly a Frankenstein-like creation; his legs are half Tau Fire Warrior, half Cadian trooper, his torso is from Emperor-knows-where, he's got a CSM head and a cultist's autogun and shoulder pad. I've also heightened his torso a bit (something I've also done to his buddies), and gave him a little scarf to make the transition from his head to his body a bit more natural.

Creating Wolffe apparently hit some creative nerve in my mind, as soon I was looking at a small crew of kitbashed mercenaries.

A Kroot. Gave him a Plasma pistol, a knife and a running pose, as I imagine him to be a bit more aggressive than the others.

The Beastman. The picture is absolutely abysmal, for which I apologize; I'll swap this one out for a better one when I find some more time.

Punchy. A tiny mutant with a huge boxing glove. Likes to punch things. Is also a petty thief.

And just because I can; a dog, rescued from my old LOTR models.

And a group shot of the crew. I actually forgot two members when I took this pic, I'll add them next time.

And that's that! I've still got two big updates coming for my Age of Sigmar armies, so this thread should get updated soon!

Hope you guys enjoy my work, comments and critique are always welcome, as the Realm of Madness is always open for visitors

Glad to have you all aboard gentle(wo)men!

Now I did say I was going to do an update for my AOS armies... but then my package of Tartaros Terminators arrived, and you all know how well I can resist the call of Chaos...

Army of Dark Compliance (Militia and Word Bearers) – Word Bearers Tartaros Terminators!…

Let's have a look at those Word Bearers now, shall we?

First up is one of the 'regular' Tartaros Terminators, wielding a stormbolter and a chainfist. As you can see, I've used quite a lot of CSM bits here; his chainfist and shoulders are from the Terminator kit, whilst his helmet is of the CSM kit. I really like the extra bulk the shoulder pads add to the model, it really makes them look more menacing and evil

I've also added a knife from the Space Wolf Pack kit to his side, as I really like the 'stitched leather' look it has. Fluff-wise, the knives are tainted sacrificial blades, used during ceremonies or sacrifices, which the Tartaros keep with them at all times. What the knives' sheaths are made of is a question best left unanswered...

A Tartaros Terminator with a heavy flamer. Again, the arms, shoulders and head are from CSM kits. I've also added a book to his side, courtesy of the Grey Knights Terminator kit; which is deliciously ironic when you think about it

The Sergeant. I really wanted this guy to stand out, so I pimped him a bit. Space Wolf gut-plate (with knife, of course), Grey Knight book for when daemonic verses are needed and a Bloodletter's head held aloft as a sacrifice for the Gods whose thirst is everlasting!

One thing I'll have to deal with later on is that the Raptors helmets don't entirely fit in the cavity; you may notice a slight gap between the torso and the upper part. I think I'll just fill it up with Green stuff and hope that it won't be too noticeable

I'm also wondering if I should add some more chaotic decoration to their armour, like the skulls I added to the legs in the Photoshop image. On the one hand, they'll definitely look more evil, but I'm starting to like this more 'functional' look... perhaps I must convene with the Chaos gods some more before continuing...

The Remnants – True-scale Chaos Space Marine

While I was waiting for the Tartaros to arrive, I had this sudden urge to work with some of the Terminator bits I already had... which somehow led to a true-scale CSM attempt:

He doesn't look too shabby, does he?

Now I've done things a bit differently than most true-scalers I've seen so far; rather than sculpting the midsection with green stuff, I cut said midsection off a regular SM torso (which took a bit of careful cutting), and then added that to a CSM Terminator's front plate. It looks rather good in my opinion, and saves me the trouble of having to sculpt it myself; then again, it's all just blu-tacked together at the moment, so I could still run into some problems...

Also, one other deviation from the standard true-scaling procedure is the kneepads. I had to cut those hip-plates off anyway, and found them looking strangely similar to MK4 armour's kneepads, so I figured I might as well try to stick them on there They're a bit big, and I had to do some difficult cutting to get them where they are know, but overall I think it doesn't look too bad. What do you guys think?

That's all I have for now, hope you enjoy!

Quick update on the true-scale Chaos Space Marine:

I've filled up the holes in his chest piece and the back of his legs with some Green stuff. Most people cover up the entire backside to make it look more like regular Power Armour, but I wanted something a bit different, so I only filled up the surfaces in between the 'ridges'. I tried to make them look a bit like the overlapping armour plates on the backside of MKIII armour, but they ended up looking more like the armour worn by Genestealer Cultists. Have a look:

Somehow, the legs ended up being more asymmetrical then I'd planned, but I don't think it's too big of a problem. After all, this is a Chaos Space Marine we're talking about, it's not like those guys care much for symmetry

Quick update numero duo:

I've been fiddling with the true-scale CSM some more, here's what he looks like at the moment:

Big, bulky and menacing. As an Astartes should be!

I can't decide whether or not I should swap out his bolter for the combi-bolter (taken from the Tartaros kit, by the way); on the one hand, I really like the sheer bulk the combi-bolter has, but on the other hand, it seems a little too big...

Also, I got inspired by some of the Black Legion artwork, and decided to add some spikes to his backpack. It really adds another dimension to him, in my opinion Now, the spikes are a bit too short, so I'm going to embed them in a wolf pelt sculpted from green stuff. The only question that remains is how big of a wolf pelt it should be... I don't want it to cover up his backpack too much, but on the other hand, I don't want the fur to be too small either...

Thoughts?

Very cool !
How about a pelt covering only the left part of the pack, would leave a decent amount visible, and I think it would work with the model's pose.

Thanks guys!

I tried to sculpt the pelt this morning, here's what it looks like at the moment:

It turned out pretty well in my opinion

Now, I've also been thinking about how I'm going to paint this guy... He's going to be a Black Legionnaire, so the colour scheme will consist of black, gold, dark silver and brown, with red as a spot colour. I'd like to give him a bit of a Blanchitsu/INQ28 vibe, but I have no idea how to do such a thing

With the truescale CSM pretty much done, I had a look at some of my other unfinished projects and came across my WIP converted Grey Knights strike team. I figured that now was as good a time as any to continue working on them, so I pulled out the Green stuff again and set out to finish up The Mentor, the team's leader...

Secreta Secretorum Strike Team – A Mentor, a Scrabouiller and a Manduco walk into a bar...

Now, most of you will probably have no idea what I'm talking about, as I made only one or two updates about them in one of my lesser known threads, so here's a recap of the idea behind these conversions:

These converted Grey Knights are loosely based upon members of the E.Y.E., a shadowy private army controlled by an organization known as the Secreta Secretorum, which is also the faction to which the protagonist of the video game EYE: Divine Cybermancy belongs. The E.Y.E. consists of a group of biologically engineered psychic warriors, and is split up in two factions, namely the Culter Dei (who wear more knightly armour) and the Jian Shiang Di (who wear more Asian style armour). These warriors were created to fight off the manifestations of the Metastreunomic Force, which is a lot like the Warp in the sense that it draws power from emotions and spawns daemon-like creatures with it. They also aid the Secreta in their secret struggle with the Federation, a coalition of human colonies, which the Secreta seeks to overthrow to establish their own dominance.

Here's a picture of some of the members of E.Y.E.:

And here are some of the conversions I put together based upon said artwork:

That said, let's have a look at the newly completed team leader, the illustrious Mentor...

++Tread carefully, my acolytes. There is more to this place than meets the eye... and we are not alone.++

The Mentor. An enigmatic figure who has walked the halls of the Temple longer than most. Under his tutelage, many warrios of the E.Y.E. have risen to greatness - commanders Rimanah, Huan Lo Pan and [REDACTED] included. A man of singular conviction, who is willing to skirt the rules to achieve the Secreta's goals - and his own, should the opportunity present itself to him...

As you can see, he's pretty much just a kitbash of Grey Knight, Blood Angels and (Chaos) Space Marine parts. I'm happy with the way the skirt turned out, although it's still a bit flat and undetailed.

I've also finished up two other models of the group, namely a Scrabouiller (a gun drone) and a Manduco (a creature spawned by the Metastreunomic Force).

Spoiler:

Yes, I sculpted an alien butt. It's what they look like in-game, I swear!

I'm wondering if I could use these guys for SW: Armageddon, but I'd probably run into some problems with their equipment... thoughts?

Remember those good old days when I managed to focus on one thing and actually finished it before starting something else?

Yeah, me neither.

So I got myself semi-distracted again, and somehow ended up finishing off my Alpha Legion Operatives (read: cultist conversions). I still got one dude left to finish (who's been unfinished for, like, a year now), but at least I managed to find him a better arm, one that suits his character a bit more than the chainsword he originally had...

Here's a group picture of the lot:

The guy on the bottom left is Pyro, who still needs some final touch-ups and highlights. Everyone else finally got their basing applied and painted, which means everyone except Pyro is actually completely finished! Huzzah!

... somehow, that reminded me that I also finished Sisyphus' basing (he's a Death Guard Hellbrute, for those who are not familiar with the man... machine... something), but I totally forgot to take a picture of that...

But of course, every time I finish a model, three more take its place, and this time is no different. So say hello to the second True-Scale Heretical Astartes:

I have no idea how or why this pic turned out to be so terrible. Pictured on the left is my first true-scale attempt, and the guy on the right is my latest attempt (currently held together by blu-tack). I've actually come up with some fluff for him too, as I got inspired by Dawn of War II's handling of corruption...as it stands, he's a former Blood Angel who foolishly claimed a relic Flamer from the armoury of a conquered vessel of a World Eaters warband as spoils of war, only to find that the thing was in fact deeply saturated with Khorne's influence. He went insane, killed a few of his own men in a fit of rage, and then fled into the outer reaches of space, where he joined up with the Black Legion. Now he serves as a Special weapons... specialist in [Aspiring Champion's name here]'s Kill Team, bringing death and destruction to his enemies, whoever they may be...

I've also got a third true-scale marine in the works, one who's gotten a bit possessed... more to come soon!

Tactical_Spam wrote:Define "a bit Possessed" Ezra.

It's that point where half of your body has already mutated into some horrific freak of nature, but you still fail to find any Daemon interested in possessing you because you aren't strong enough yet

Or maybe it's when one of your limbs gets possessed by a minor Daemon or something. Like, your foot gets taken over by a Tzeentch familiar, and it spends the rest of its life morphing into all sorts of weird things. Imagine suddenly growing a chicken leg while you're running for cover

Jokes aside, I put the second True-scaled Traitor together today, here's what he looks like at the moment:

Burn them! Burn them to ash! Consign them all to the flame!

I bulked out the legs this time, as this guy fell to Chaos (relatively) recently, and thus possesses a more recent pattern of Power Armour. I also added the Tyranid head to his backpack as a nod to the Shield of Baal campaign, in which the Blood Angels fought against Hivefleet Leviathan, providing another link to his former Chapter...

I've been toying with the semi-Possessed one some more, but I haven't found a suitable pose yet, so no pics of him at this point. I've also sculpted the skirt of one of the Secreta dudes, but I messed it up a bit... will post pictures of him once I've put him together a bit more

In the Warp, getting trolled by Tactical_Spam, AKA TZEENTCH INCARNATE

I've been working on another dude of the E.Y.E. Strike Team, and now that his Green stuffed skirt has dried, I've also been able to glue the rest of him together. Have a look:

Huan Lo Pan, commander of the Jian Shiang Di:

Sadly not visible in the pictures is his helmet, which is that of the CSM Nurgle champion with the horn cut off. His fancy torso (from the Sternguard) kit is also rather obscured by his weapon, but maybe I'll be able to address that in the painting stage.

With this guy finished, my E.Y.E. Strike team is nearly fully built! I've just got one more member and one enemy left to finish now

E.Y.E stuff is looking unreal!

I always thought there were some definite parallels in lore and aesthetic between the two universes, and it's great to see somebody bring that to life.

The rest of the blog is inspiring as well - I particularly love the warband with Punchy & co. keep it up!

Cool conversions I love the skull masked dude, The Mentor. Great conversion and really characterful.

The only one i'my not a massive fan of is the dude with a plate on his head. I see what you'very tried to do, but it doesn't work for me as it seems too big.

Haha perfect

Loving the Truescale dudes Ezra. Really nice work

I'll second the oriental-looking marine's helmet seeming a tad too big. It sort of dwarfs the rest of the model, but the concept is really cool

I kind of like the massive hat. It reminds me of Embo from Star Wars, who uses his hat for a lot of things.

Thank you very much! Glad to hear that my attempts to blend the two universes together are appreciated

@everyone; the hat does seem a little bit too big from a modelling perspective, in retrospect. I went back to the original artwork/the game to see if there was something I could do to make it look less big, only to find.. well, see below:

Turns out my choice for that bit wasn't motivated only by the fact that it was the only thing available to me at the time; his hat is actually that big in-game.

And it has bears on it.

Seriously, what the hell. How did I forget about this thing?

Pictured here with some of his more sensibly dressed subordinates.

Also, note the guy on the left. I'm going to give the last member of my strike team a similarly-shaped hat, maybe even with the same little icon on top of it. I have no idea what I could use to make it, though; maybe some kind of small shield?

In other modelling news, I've been playing around with True scale CSM number 3 and 4 some more, and I think I've found them some nice poses. Have a look:

First, Mr. Mutated Arm, also known as Semi-Possessed Man. I'm still debating whether or not I should make him more daemonic/possessed-looking.

And secondly, Mr. Lightning Claws. On the one hand, I find his pose a bit too static, but on the other hand, I kind of like how it makes him look menacing and powerful.

Here's a group shot of the lot:

What do you guys think?

EDIT:

Worked a bit on the final true scale CSM. He's probably going to be the Aspiring Champion of the group, although I'm not sure he fits the part yet...

For those wondering, his helmet was taken from one of the spikes from the Chaos vehicle sprue (or at least, I think it belongs to that kit).

Here's another group shot:

Quick update:

I've primed all of the E.Y.E. strike team stuff, except for the final team member and the two drones, as I still need to build the former and figure out how I'm going to prime the latter. I've also started painting Huan Lo Pan, mostly as a test to see if I still remembered what colours I used for the gold. Here's what he looks like at the moment:

I'm also working on the silver/metal parts, and once they're done, I'll wash both the gold and the metal parts so I can start edge-highlighting the armour.
