evening Dakka,

so i've got some money burning a hole in my pocket and i've set my eyes on some armada stuff.

now with the money i have i can get my hands on either:

An imperial start destroyer ($72)

or

a combo pack of a Gladiator and a Victory class destroyer ($87)

i'll have change with both purchases which will be going towards extra dice and possibly an extra maneuver tool

any pros or cons for either or recommendations?

What do you have already? If just the core set, I'd recommend the Vic/Glad, simply because they will leave you with more ships to work with. The ISD is kind of a big ship you have to build around, whereas the Vic/Gladiator can be tweaked or replaced as you gain more ships.

Q: What do you call a Dinosaur Handpuppet?

Yeah just the core set atm. I was leaning towards the combo pack just for more ships

Can there really be any answer besides the ISD, iconic triangle of death? If you don't have one you need to fix that problem.

Well I will eventually hope to own at least two of them Peregrine but just starting out so I think a few additional ships is a better option

A Gladiator and an additional Victory (assuming you have the core) will add more flexibility than a single Imperial Star Destroyer. That way it's always possible to play smaller, quicker games if you don't have the time for a full size 3-400pt game.

You don't need flexibility if you have an ISD, you just put the best capital ship in Star Wars into every list.

Not if you aren't including an ISD.

I'd personally play with/against the ISD due to how darn iconic it is. However, I can understand if the other set is more valuable for flexibility and strategy. That said, if you do get the other two first, the ISD definitely ought to be next up in the queue.

Like Peregrine, I'd go ISD.

No, it's easy. Just throw in more ISDs, best of both worlds.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

It is always the Goliath to everyone's David.
I agree it looks nasty just plunking it down on the table, nevermind whom is in it or what options were chosen.
Other ships wish to be that when they grow up...

All kidding aside, the Gladiator I found pretty flexible to kit it out however you want (But I felt you really must have two.).
If you only have the core set, then getting a Victory expansion will give a few more options with what you have.
I had a great battle where my ISD was getting hammered (Corvetts die so well...) and that darn Luke Skywalker (gnat) kept ignoring my shields... very irritating.
You do need to treat yourself to it sometime soon.

I know my first Imperial purchases were a Glad and a Raider, even though the ImpStar was available. I have one now, and it's fun as a flagship for my collection, but my 2 Raiders, 2 Vics, a Gladiator and an Arquittens (and a single Gozanti flotilla, but they are not my 'real' capitol ships) see more time on the table in different combinations.

Though a fleet 1 ImpStar flanked by a pair of Victories is pretty damn satisfyingly intimidating on the table, even though you really need JerJerrod to make them shine.

Interdictor is really nice, I would have suggested that and the Gladiator for a buy.

There's a combo with it you can do to reduce an opponent's ship speed down to 0, so it gets no defense tokens. And the interdictor is no slouch in firepower itself, so you can really punish an enemy capital ship with it.

It never ends well

My two cents would be to spam Arquitens and rule the long-range broadside game. Surprise your opponent by how manoeuverable you are and keep them engaged by running alongside them and pounding small ships with those 3 red dice. Or add Enhanced Armament for even more fun. Or TRC for really consistent damage.

So we played our big game last night, and my friend bought an ISD so he had to field it. I was incredibly lucky to get both of my MC30c in range of three of his ships, as well as my MC80. Ackbar was my admiral, and both shrimps had Gunnery teams. I was able to maul his ISD pretty severely, scratch his Arquitens and wipe his Raider off the board in a single turn of shooting.

So although the ISD is iconic, you have to know how to fly it.

Yep, it's easy to get cocky with that big wedge of cheese, but if you don't support it, it can be easy to destroy it. You'd be surprised how easily it can drown in enemy fighters, for example - which happened to me.

It never ends well
