A Southern California man fatally shot his estranged wife inside an elementary school classroom attended by special needs children, before killing himself on Monday, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.
Two students were injured in the murder-suicide at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, and one of those children one later died at a hospital, Burguan said.

And before anybody asks, yes, California has a Gun-Free School Zone law in place, and the shooter obviously broke that law, so don't start clamoring to outlaw guns at schools!

This ain't the first gun related incident in that place?

If by 'on the run' you mean 'shot to death in the same gunfight her husband got capped in' you would be correct.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A heavily armed man and woman terrorized this city on Wednesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding at least 17 at a social services center before leading the police on a manhunt culminating in a shootout that left the two suspects dead, the authorities said.

Unless you are referring to another incident.

I would dispute the Lone Wolf thing too, the couple had help.

Perhaps Lone Wolf was inelegant. What I meant was that this was a self-radicalized cell that had little material assistance from anyone outside of the alleged three person cell.

No proof they were 'self radicalized' that I've seen. In fact, the trips overseas kind of make it less likely. The wife was likely radicalized before coming to the US.

And there was likely help from family as well, so more than 3 people. (The trial of three others is coming up or recently started).

It was my understanding that the FBI described the couple as "homegrown violent extremists", and were both exchanging private messages with radical content prior to their first meeting in Saudi Arabia.

I'm pretty sure that a domestic violence conviction would prohibit someone from lawfully owning a firearm in CA so we may see someone get charged with an illegal sale.

The news has been very sparse on his background. While it appears that there were problems in the marriage there has not been anything yet confirmed to say that he had a conviction for domestic abuse.

Yup. That makes you a "prohibited possessor" in CA. (if the conviction is true of course)

Illegal purchase or stolen. Its probbly pretty unlikely that's a legally owned weapon.
Not forgetting the killer could of stolen thr gun off someone he knew?

This is yet another tragedy that should not have happened. I just hope there aren't a bunch of politicians that will try to use this to push their own agenda.

My personal pet peeve is when legistlation is passed to "prevent the next X incident", when said legislation would have done NOTHING to prevent the incident in question.

there has never been any legislation that has been signed into law to prevent the next incident.

There has been TONS of legislation passed in order to prevent the next masacre. Assault Weapons bans, magazine capacity bans, bayonette bans, hollow point ammo bans, Semi-auto shotgun bans, etc. When the ACLU joins forces with the NRA you know stupid stuff has been passed.

there is no federal assault weapons ban. There was one in 1994, but that got ruled unconstitutional in 2013, so odds are there will never be another one.

I was thinking of the 2013 bill to reinstate the 1994 one, turns out it was just voted down. My bad. But still no federal assault weapon bans in effect.

one does exist in CA however where this incident occurred, and is far more draconian than the federal one. it is there and very much in force and it is *real* bad juju if you are found in violation.

The problem is that AWB's are fundamentally somewhat ridiculous from an efficacy standpoint, even from the perspective of a pro gun control philosophy, as they ban things based on incidental features without directly addressing the core action on the weapon, and leave plenty of weapons that are just as capable but may not look a certain way completely untouched, or allow for changing of furniture options (like grips or stocks) on banned guns to make them compliant.

Which is partly (though obviously not wholly) why we are unlikely to see another one on a federal level any time soon.

The other big issue with the Federal AWB was that while it banned the sale of new "assault weapons" it left the millions of "assault weapons" already privately owned in circulation. The ban made "assault weapons" more expensive by imposing artificial scarcity but it didn't remove "assault weapons" from society. A new ban would still leave an ample supply of tens of millions of "assault weapons" already owned by people and actually incentivize people to sell some of them to new buyers to take advantage of profiting from the new higher price set by the market.

Aye, and "preban" guns still carry that markup even today, though the ban in CA does address that, AW's are simply nontransferable within the state even in the case of death/inheritance, though if its not one of those banned specifically by name you can just swap bits and usually be fine.

Agree, I don't think this is radical Christian abortion clinic bombing area. I think this is a sick individual, who was not radicalized committing an atrocity. Unless we find a note, motive, or something to that effect it would be hard pressed to call this religious zealotyr. Problem is with Muslim extremism, it all has its roots in teaching from some Imam somewhere, so then it falls in that category. I am not sure this fits in the hole your trying to place this peg.

Eh, you could make a case for all the "traditional family" crap that is preached over here as a motive for shooting his ex. It would be pure speculation, of course, but when has that ever stopped us from coming to firm conclusions with flimsy evidence.
