Looking to upgrade from my current DS to a 2 or 3. Anyone have a preference? The price point and lack of 3D is really steering me towards the 2DS, but my friend claims there's some power issues in terms of games stuttering or playing poorly.
I would go for the "New 3DS". Yes, the "New" is part of the name (or was, when I bought mine a few months back). It's a more powerful version, and there will be games (if not already) that will make use of it.
On the other hand, if you're not going to play much on it anyway, then the cheaper version may still be better.

My son really likes his 2ds but Id say if you have the money go for the new 3ds. There are a small handful of games that only those can play due to the extra power as mentioned. Ive been wanting to get one as well but I bought the switch and now Im not sure. Maybe when they are cheaper.
I wouldnt say poor power at all. Its a 3ds without the 3d option. Its just the new 3ds has more power for certain games and a built in amiibo scanner. You can buy an amiibo scanner for a eds/2ds as well if thats a thing you need. So no unless you buy one of the games that need that extra kick (that Xenoblade game for example) you wont even notice
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Go for the new 3DS the stronger cpu really helps in some games like smash brothers, and you won't also be blocked out of playing some other games such as xenoblade for example as the normal 3DS isn't strong enough to play it. Otherwise, I really don't like how the 2DS doesn't fold up; honestly the 2DS is just the cheapened down version of the 3DS and I feel like it's better for smaller children who would happen to drop and break the hinge otherwise. The stuttering comes from some games which really tax the standard 3DS and 2DS like smash bros does.
As for comfort the new 3DS doesn't come in the XL size I believe which can be less comfortable if you have larger hands but I don't think it'd be much of an issue.
I played my sons the other day and heres my personal take from it. The crosspad feels very squishy compared to my 3ds. It ia very light in the hand whether or not that means flimsy I couldnt tell you. But my biggest problem is it cramped my hands up pretty quickly. I only made it through 1 season of racing on mariokart7 ( which is 4 races) and I said Im done. Where as on my personal 3ds I know for a fact Ive played that same game for an hour with no real issues.
So if youre going a 2ds you really might want to hold one somewhere first because it feels comfortable to my son and very not comfy to me.
Big fan of the 3DS XL. The larger screen and better processor is totally worth it. If I already had a 3DS, it would be a closer call, but for buying a new system, I would (and did!) go 3DS XL.
Wanted to post an update. Picked up a used 2DS for about $50, and it's decent for what it does. It does feel a little weird to hold, but for my standard gaming (RPGs) it's fine, I don't do any serious action gaming on it, that's for my PS4.

Definitely, but yeah, if you're going to be playing more actiony games, spring for the 3DS. If you have young kids, this is more durable, a lot like the old GBAs
Yeah the 3ds is a friggin tank. Nintendo has always made pretty robust handhelds, Ill occasionally look for damaged handhelds on ebay and some of those broken gameboys/DS system just shock me. I find ot hard to understand just how people brake those
More news from Nintendo on this front. They are releasing a New2dsXL in june? Or July. I just woke up and already forgot what I read lol. Anyways heres a link and such
