Hi all.

Really strange one here.
Between me and my friends we have decided on a tournament.

We are allowed to spend £125 And must build a 1k list.
No proxies, only current GW models.
No warscrolls battalions are allowed, so units only.

Now the scary part.
Winner of the tournament takes all of the armies used.

We all picked armies at random from a hat.
I naturally drew high elves.

Now this is back to the old structure, so only high elf units.

My main issue is the bolt thrower, Archers, spearmen and silver helms are no longer available.

Long story short, I need to hash together as much of a solid list as I can at 1k without spending more than £125.

We have allowed half the spire set though and eBay purchases.

So £25 gets me spire elf side and £12 for more reavers.
This gives me:

Prince on griffon
Arch mage

5 reavers (BL unit)
5 reavers (BL unit)

10 sea guard
10 swordmasters

Now I'm somewhat worried as the army lacks just about everything.
The main 2 I'm worried about is a night goblin army and tzeentch arcanites.

Any advice would be extremely welcome please.

My Wife has started High Elves, and is unbeaten so far. Her list is;

High Elf Prince on a Griffin
5 Reavers
5 Reavers
10 Sisters of Avalorn
10 Archers
Bolt Thrower

Sisters form a line in front. The Archers another line 3 inches behind them, followed by the bolt thrower. Both of them serve as bubble wrap for the bolt thrower, while the Reavers range out and harass and score objectives. The Griffin is counter assault for anything that hits the sisters.

You can replace Archers with sea guard. If you get a sea helm for them, they can do work. I don't suppose a Hurricanum would be allowed? It could replace the bolt thower, but other wise I am not sure what other long range pressure units High Elves have.

Unfortunately no hurricanum :(
And due to wording, sisters are no longer highborn either, meaning I lose possibly the best shooting unit.

Other idea I had was trying to hunker down and weather the games.
Phoenix guard have a 4+ save and get a 4+ after save aswell.
With mystic shield I can boost them to a 3+ or with the use of cover.

If I run a arch mage too I get the ability to give a 16" 6+ save after save aswell.
But he's fairly squishy.

Thinking along these lines:

Arch mage 120
Prince on Griffin 220

5 reavers 160
5 reavers 160

10 Phoenix guard 200
10 sea guard 120

Comes out at 980 total.
However, I'm now debating 2 options.

1: swap the griffin for 10 more Phoenix guard for the durability.
2: swap the griffin and sea guard for eltharion as he hits alot harder then both (still has rules and a model too!)

Either way, I need to be fast enough for objective games while having the ability to do damage to units.
I'm hoping I can use the Phoenix guard as anvils and chip away at units, or hold them in place before smashing into the you it with something else.

Bit of a strange set up, indeed. So you are playing with the old compendium packs but only allowing in production models. Are you playing with Matched Play rules? It seems Reavers are the only battleline across the whole army now.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Using matched play rules and scenarios from the GHB.
No longer produced models are allowed aslong as it's the most up to date version and has rules.

So I can scour eBay for example and pick up a bolt thrower etc.

And that's what's hurting me the most.
My battle line units essentially cost me 320 points for 10 models.

The main issue I'm having is finding units with decent damage output as I know 1 list alone will be running 2 units of 40 night goblins packed with fanatics.

I don't really like the idea of giving models away if you lose, even with friends. So if you're not feeling terribly confident, just try to spent the least amount of money possible so you aren't losing too much.

If you are still going for it, the Phoenix Guard are tough cookies indeed, but they don't have hardly any damage output. I would keep the Griffon as he is very strong, though you need something else to be good rend -1 damage output as a unit, so maybe Swordmasters could be a good bet. By just doing "Highborn" you are seriously limiting your options.

Do you know all the other armies by the way?

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

We usually do it every now and then with 40k/30k so it's just a bit of fun really.

And it must always be £125.
So if the army is less it needs cash to make up for it lol.

Unfortunately that's how armies were randomly selected.
So anyone could have got them.
Still not as bad off as other people for the army I picked.

All I know for sure is night goblins and tzeentch arcanites (he's going mortal only though, so no daemons)
So really not sure about any others.

If you're allowed compendium then how about:

Eltharion on Stormwing
Prince Imrik, Dragonlord

High Elf Spearmen
High Elf Spearmen

Great Eagle

1000 on the dot, with 2 rock solid hero monsters that can dish out tons of damage each for your opponent to deal with. The Spearmen stay in cover and try to capture objectives while the Eagle annoys.

I think big monsters are the way to go to be fair.
Is there any benefit of Imrik over a regular dragon Lord though?

The enchanted shield is a pretty useful item to be fair.

I may have to grab some spearmen either way.
200 points for the battle line is alot better than 320.
Gives me alot more breathing room.

Yeah, you could swap out Imrik for the regular Dragonlord, it frees up another 40 points, so you could also drop the eagle and add a 3rd unit of Spearmen for extra bodies or swap 2 units of Spearmen for one unit of Reavers (although I would prefer 30 bodies of Spearmen just to hold objectives).

Edit, I would probably go for:

Dragonlord (General, Inspiring, Quicksilver Potion) (400)
Eltharion on Stormwing (340)

Spearmen (80)
Spearmen (80)
Archers (100)

Total: 1000
