When I was a kid, we had 10 acres of land. We weren't farmers, but we did have a pretty decent sized garden growing. It was in my teen years that I get a taste for the fun of growing your own food. Shortly there after I joined the AF, and I spent the next 13 years just unable to do any real gardening.

Well, we bought a house a couple of years ago, in what I plan on being my last assignment until I retire. Last year I set up a garden box, and put a small variety of vegetables in there. Mainly cucumbers and tomatoes. They were a huge success, with us getting more then we could handle with both of them.

So this year, I decided to go all in.

Brocolli, Corn, Carrots, Onions, Garlic, Lettuce, Strawberries, Cucumbers, Peppers, and tomatoes in the box inside of the fence line.

It's been almost a month since I planted, and so far so good. I've got more then 50% of growth on the things I planted, so I'm quite happy with that.

What about you guys?

I grow a motley assortment of various plants depending on what I have & feel like growing, most of them not edible. Apartment living limits what I can do but I have some garden benches to set up on the patio so hopefully I can do a bit more soon. My favorite is probably a terrarium with several carnivorous plants and a few others mixed in, all covered in moss (southern cali doesn't believe in rain so moss isn't common to see outside gardens).

I was more interested in flowers and stuff when I was younger, but I've definitely shifted towards a more food centric purpose. My hunting skills have certainly left my family down, but at least I'm getting something this way.

We had a garden at our house, with mint, cucumber, tomatoes, and a bunch of herbs. The dog destroyed all of it except the mint plant.

My parents let us use some space in their backyard for our next garden. We have lots of types of peas, tomatoes, cucumber, strawberries, squash (only ever got one squash from that plant), spinach, red cabbage, green onions, red bell peppers, artichokes (which we are now sick of), and carrots, which rarely grow for us. That's in addition to my parents' trees: oranges, mandarin oranges, tangerines, lemons, figs, avocado, and a nectarine tree that never produces fruit anymore. We had a blackberry vine for a while, but it was too invasive, so we killed it.

I don't (I have a black thumb) but my dad does. He has grown everything from coffee trees to watermelons in our apartment (granted, with freaky DIY lighting and stuff) but if it can grow, he can make it grow.

Our apartment looks weird as hell though. Again DIY lighting and humidity control.

I love putting stuff in the ground and watching it grow. We have a small garden with some vegetables and fruits (rhubarb and strawberries, mostly). I don't get to do much in it though, my dad usually steals all the work away
We also have a few fruit trees (Apple, pear and cherry), but the cherry trees are usually picked clean by birds.

We usually have a big garden. Despite it being an unusually early spring it is still too early to plant, but we've got a bunch of starts going.

What a great idea for a thread.

I'm pretty decent at growing stuff, but I never really have the will to maintain a large garden. However, last year I did decide to put in some minor effort on 2 things:

Scotch Bonnet peppers. These are really important for Jamaican Beef Patties. I loved these when I lived in NYC but of course I cannot get either Jamaican Beef Patties nor Scotch Bonnets in Iowa. For the last few years I've tried growing them with mixed results - Iowa really doesn't have the right climate for growing tropical peppers. I will try again this year because I did get a pretty good crop last year - they were just not very hot (they should be about Habanero heat but the wetness of the soil affects it, and man did it ever ran nonstop right at the crucial time last year).

Spoiler:

Potatoes - I like to grow Yukon Gold potatoes in bags. It's actually incredibly easy - fill a growing bag with dirt, then fill it with potatoes. Water them. That's about it. Once all the potato plants die, and it looks like you ruined them, dump out the bags and harvest delicious potatoes. You get a much smaller yield than in a proper garden, but it's still about 20 pounds of potatoes with no work and minimal room required. I think I got 3 or so baskets like this (that's a turkey fryer basket)

Spoiler:

I'm actually going to tab out and order my seed potatoes now, this is just about the perfect time.

My garden is in need of some tlc, I cannot put in too much time at the moment due to work but I have some roses which are starting to do really well, trained around an archway.

This arch separates the lawn from a small wooded area. The lawn needs to be dug out and reoriented. I am planning more flowering shrubs and plants to surround it. The woodland area is being cleared with bluebells and other small English flowering plants being put in so spring next year should see a carpet of colour.

I have grown veg and other plants before. I'll probably see if I have time to put up some peas and beans and maybe start off some lavender, thyme and rosemary seeds for some herb edging for the lawn and patio. I really want Hostas but I have given up the battle against the slugs that devour my efforts all the frikkin time!

Wish I could garden, but I live in Texas. So, not only does it take a lot of work paying attention to keep everything properly watered and not burning up in the sun, but it also requires me to be in that burning sun.
I could do a little herb garden, though.

I'm sorry but the fact that you have baskets designed to deep fry whole turkeys would seem to pretty much confirm every negative stereotype about American food

I have 1 acre of land and have a good size garden. I had a heck of a good year on tomatoes last year and a pretty good year on peppers. I did grow watermelon also last season for the first time which turned out well also. My secret to a good garden is fish guts that I bury in the garden throughout the year. My wife hates that I do it for some strange reason but she was raised in the city and knows nothing about gardening/outdoors. I also compost everything I can which helps. I'm off work tomorrow so was going to start working on turning over the garden for this season.

When I was in Texas, I had a box garden for peppers, tomatoes, herbs, and other stuff.

This year, I made a new box garden (in IL, now). We plant this week as it appears that the frosts are behind us. Hopefully.

This year will be Kholrabi, green beans, bell peppers, and tomatoes.

We had a swimming pool in the back yard until one winter a mole tunneled into the liner and tore it. The estimates we got to fix it (essentially replacing the liner and some other work) was over $10K. Rather than spend that money on something we use a handful of times during the year we are filling it in and turning it into a vegetable garden.

If you have never had a deep fried turkey, you have no idea what you are missing out on.

1.) It's not greasy, despite what you might think

2.) They are incredibly juicy, much more than baking or broiling, even in a bag

3.) A 14lb turkey takes about 45 min to cook and 15 min to cool. This makes for a pretty amazing Thanksgiving/Christmas etc, where your oven is totally free for making pies, and so on. You can brine them but I don't bother, I literally just unwrap it, make sure it's totally defrosted, pat it with some rub, and into the oil it goes. We go from turkey in the fridge to eating it in 90 minutes.

That's only if you know how to properly deep fry foods (Fried chicken isn't suppose to be greasy either). And Turkeys can be dangerous since I heard they can get explosive due to the water contained in the flesh and skin.

Actually it's more of the wingdings who just drops the turkey into the oil. From what I've read you have to slowly lower it into the oil.

I have deep fried one 3 or 4 times. They seem to come out the juiciest. It's the frozen part that causes the explosion of hot oil and the fires and the burns.

When I move this summer, and finally have a house instead of a condo, I'm hoping to grow something. Problem is, our back yard is gonna be mostly shaded all the time.. but I could grow something small on the deck .. we're on a hill, so the back yard is off the basement, but the deck is off the 1st floor by the kitchen.. sun hits that, but not so much on the grass.

I'll probably start with a little pot for some herbs like basil and cilantro, and maybe a potted tomato plant or 2.

Our small vegetable beds are not doing much yet, and I'm not sure if we'll bother with them this year.

But we got the flower beds in the front garden fixed up and ready for spring. Decided to put ground cover on the side that gets mostly shade, and the containers on the rest.

I have a degree that proves that I at know how to keep plants alive including specializations in plant disease and cultivation methods. I own multiple plants who try to colonize my entire house with their vines, and I do have a small collection of rare species, and like to grow some of my own fruit and vegetables in my small apartment.. However I do not consider myself to have green thumb's I just do not care enough to water them as much as I should do.. As a result of this I am unable to grow any species that isn't at least somewhat drought resistant.
