I've decided I would start painting 40k minis again after nearly 8 years and wanted to do something other than the basic Space Marines Chapters. So I decided I would come up with my own by branching it off from the salamanders and giving them a Dragon theme. Im not to sure on the wings, but i do plan to use red on the test model in second picture. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally the wings don't work with the rest of the model as they are too demonic for a normal space marine.

There are third party suppliers who provide dragon style cloaks/shoulder pads so maybe that might work for you in creating a dragon theme?

I'm aware of the 3rd part suppliers but the model is the assault on black reach commander and can't add those bits to the miniature. But you are correct the wings are a bit out of place I just wish my sculpting skills were better so I could do some scales.

Ater racking my brain on what I could do I finally decided I would hack out the original shoulder pad and use a 3rd party one like Tartarus the Abyss suggested. Its currently being held together with blue tac but I will have to do some GS work, especially on the cloak

I think the new shoulder pad looks awesome! If you want to try something else for conversion/personalization - you could see if the lizardman (Seraphon?) minis have bits you could use on your marines. Or you could head swap them!

Ive looked at the Serpahons doomdreamer and it doesn't seem like there are of any useful bits, but decided I would go with a different Shoulder pad,

Working on the cloak, slow process, side note I really hate the cameras on phones.

I really like how that shoulder pad looks with shading. Good choice
