Shade of Despair and Torment

Hello, and thank you for reading and replies.

So, I have not done AoS yet. I used to warhammer (Kislev) way back. These Kharadron are amazing. I am a big Viking, Pirate, Nautical, kinda fan in general, and this new army seems to fit the bill for all my likes combined. I have some "play" money in paypal (ebay sales) and can grab a Kharadron Overlords New Release bundle for $160...

Now, the other idea tugging at my brain is a Custodes/Cypher fallen army. I had played 40k from it's conception to up to about two years ago. I was a huge Dark Angels player, and was deep into the Fallen fluff. Cypher is like the Boba Fett of 40k imho. I could easily grab a custodes bundle off ebay, a cypher, and horus heresy sprues, and DA bits for around $200...

This is my dilemma. A small one in life, but one I have.

The other idea about the Kharadron Overlords are the fact that they could be played as Squats as they are! (no conversions, and no balloons though). What if I were to do a Kharadron/Squat (run as custodes or marines) with Cypher & Fallen? I could do AoS & 30K & 40k!

Thoughts?

I'm from the future. The future of space

It's a really bad time to get into 40k. A new version is right on the horizon. While some talk seems to be pointing towards it becoming a lot more like Age of Sigmar, it's really hard to know how things will shake out.

For Age of Sigmar, it seems that the general's handbook has been pretty influencial on how most people approach the game. An updated one is supposed to come out some time this year. You don't really need it to get started but I'd recommend against buying the current one. You don't really need it though as apparently everything you need is in your battletome, on the warscroll pdfs on GW's site and in the free rules.

I think the Kharadron would work great in 40k. I'm sure you'll be able to find some rules that work. I'd use the baloons either way and just make up rules. If someone is going to be open to playing 40k against them straight up, they're probably flexible enough to go with whatever in terms of rules.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Thank you frozenwastes. That's what I heard and am glad to hear it again. I think with AoS so new and new to me too, that'd be the way to go. When a new 40k roles around I can squatinuze my AoS army. I'll still grab cypher to paint up though!

AoS for sure. I'm temporarily getting out of 40k since they seem to be on a space marine/primarch obsession to no end and more or less turning it into 30k mk.2 which is not what I got into the game for.

Depending on where 40k goes lore wise and model wise I might just permanently migrate to Sigmar. If it's just an endless tide of marines/IoM/Chaos releases then nope.

There are also rumored Cthulhu style Dark Aelf sky pirates and now possibly a big update to Clan Skyre coming with the new rumor engine photo. I'm excited to see what they cook up in AoS it always seems like every month is something new and amazing.

In da Mekshop

I think with the Overlords, you can play them in both AoS and 40k if you have a 40k opponent that doesn't mind counts-as.

I think your best bet for a 40k Overlords army would be to use some flavor of Space Marines, specifically the ones that can get access to the StormRaven. That can be the rules for the big Overlords ship since it has a carrying capacity. The medium sized Overlords ship can use the StormTalon rules, and the smallest Overlords gunship can use Landspeeder rules.

The great thing about that is you can use all your ships, and all those Marine ships have the 40k rule Hover, which works well for how the Overlords ships would work - both fast and hover-capable.

You might wind up having to do something like using Scouts rules for the Arkanaught Company lighter troops, and the Grundstock Thunderers would be Space Marines of some type.

The baloon-Duardin can be jump-troops. There's a lot of crossover really.

I think the only negative would be that you'd have to find a way to represent certain weapons and amounts of them, and they may not necessarily transition easily to 40k organizations.

For instance, if you were doing Company Duardin as counts-as Scouts, you'd only be able to take one heavy weapon, where the Company Duardin models may let you take multiple special weapons in an AoS warscroll choice. So, you may have to buy and paint up some extra models that only get used for 40k, or for AoS, when you play either game. Hope that makes sense.

As you can tell, I've had similar thoughts regarding this idea, Krazynade!
