Hey guys,

I'm new to the hobby and recently started collecting some Khorne for AoS.

I've read that 8th edition 40k will soon be launched, which gets me really interested in collecting some SM and orks.

I was just wondering, what is the standard size for your regular file and rank units? According to the basing guidelines guide on DakkaDakka, 32mm is "the new infantry base size". However, it seems many of the models on GW's website ship with the 25 mm bases.

So my question is: for someone who is just about to start collecting 40K in preparation for 8th edition, should I go with 25 mm or 32 mm bases?

Thanks! And sorry for sloppy English, it's not my mother tongue

With the likely absence of templates...there won't be a base size necessary really.

I don't use GW basing for any of my models. I keep in the 25-30mm range though. Depending on your army, you'd be safe with 25 or 32 (though most new models are shipping with 32's so that would be easier).

I feel rather stupid for asking, but what are templates in this case?

Also, my brother bought the Assault on Black Reach box a couple of years ago. It's still unopened so we figured it would be a good start for us now, as we prepare for 8th edition.
As I understand it, some of these models have different base sizes if I were to order them now from the GW site. Would you recommend me updating them with the new sizes they ship with nowadays, or just keep the old ones?

Head to the 8th threads. All over the shop. I bid ye farewell templates.

As for bases. 32mm look best IMO.

Yeah old and new boxes will have different size bases, sometimes. Not a big deal at all. If you're picky about it, then you'll want to buy matching bases, but if it doesn't bother you - just roll with it.

My preference is for the 32s. It is strange how the extra few mm make a difference with the aesthetic. I'm not aware of a specific 40k rule on this (though I think this issue is addressed to a degree in the AoS rules). I would just keep in mind the coherency requirements and run with the base size that looks best to you.

bases are being removed like they were in AOS.
you measure from miniature to miniature.

I don't remember seeing GW make that statement.

GW has not made the statement that measuring is model to model, so ignore that unless confirmed later.

Base size: As others have said, go with what's in the box.
