God morning dakka!

As the title suggests I have a guy in my normal gaming group who always brings the same army. 3 riptides, a wraith-lord, warp-spiders and a scattering of bikes.

My normal list is mostly sternguard and wolf devastators with a smattering of combi weapon terminators and a couple psychics.

No matter how I manipulate my lists this guy tables me at or before turn 3.

Deepstrike? - Interceptor.
Alpha assault? - Overwatch that would make the death-star blush.
Stand back and shoot? - Void generator BS + "toe" in cover
Flooding the table with helfrost, poison and force weapons? - T8, immune to poison and see above overwatch.
Smashhammer prime deathstar? - ID'd removed from play on the first turn.

How the Hell do I deal with this?

Let's say I have access to all of the current astarties codex's and can use everything except centurions.

Toe in cover is invalidated by the faqs

Time to send in the white scars battle company with 400 pts of free stuff!

I'll have to tell him that. Still, those void shield generators...

Grav knocks them down on a "6". I admit that void shields are very strong in the current meta.

How are they immune to poison? Only Gargantuans have resistance (wounded on 6s) but Wraithlords are just MCs-they're wounded normally by poison. Same for Riptides.

is he using a wraithlord or a wraithknight cause you should be eating wraithlords for lunch they are very cost ineffective. WK on the other hand are undercosted. also that does not sound like a fun list to play against.

what you are bringing against it is not a tier 1 list. Terminators are not particulary cost to points effective. psyches should be fairly strong, I would say against that list bring a conclave. sternguard in a pod with melta or plasma should dissolve a riptide and have to be dealt with next turn. scatter bikes and warp spiders are made of tissue paper, as said abocve bikes would deal with them heck even tac marines in a razorback with assault cannons with do the job move 6 hope to be in range or get our 6 and throw bolters into em.

He might mistaken that name, he may mean Wraith Knight.

Fair enough. But everything else should still be vulnerable to poison.

Edit: Admittedly, it takes about 8 Sternguard rapid firing their Hellfire rounds to take 1 wound off a Riptide (with FNP), so...

Wraith knight is correct. It confuses my brain that the Lords are the little ones

As for terminators, I'm using wolf terminators. 33pts each with combi weapons for 5 and free storm shields. for 38 points I have a 2+/3++ unit with a combi weapon and deep strike. This is compared to a sternguard at 32 points each or 39 points each if you put that 5-man in a drop pod. I don't use them like terminators, I use them like 2+/3++ sternguard.

Against such OP list, I would suggest using Draigo- Grav Centurion-Librarian Conclave (with Tigirius, for his Warlord Trait to grant Rending to hurricane bolters ) list. It offered you the best firepower you can get to destroy any Eldar / Tau MC / GMCs, while the mobility can be enhanced by GoI, remember to fish Invisibility, that is your life So always let Tigirius roll on Invisibility first, he alone will have around 75% chance of getting that. After that, reserve one Librarian to roll on Divination, if you get Perfect Timing, great, if not, just cast Precisence to TL those Grav Cannons.

Fun thing is Rending Hurricane Bolters can even hurt Wraithlords/knights!

Welp. That stinks. Have you considered asking your buddy to just tone down his list a bit?

Edit: Alternatively, when he asks for a game, just say "No thanks."

Riptides are functionally immune to poison that is not ap2.

Not really? It's 4 shots for over 150 points, hitting on 3s, wounding on 5s (Wraithknight) or 3s (Riptides).

honestly even using them as sternguard with better armor you are still slow and personally I run 1 unit of sterngaurd below 1500 and 2 up to 2k. you need some speed.

the issue as you know is that he is quite mobile. I have two suggestions

1st with that power level list if you have the models go with a gladius and drown him in assault cannon and bolter fire. 2nd option wait to see in a fw months what 8th entails if you do not have the models for gladius.
also if you have wulfen they are fast and should be able to catch and eat some riptides for lunch

Oh most people don't even play with him anymore. I end up squaring off against him more often because I have to show up late because of work. He's a total dick when it comes to tourneys though....

Then just hobby, or don't bother going in to your gaming store if you can't make it on time. No gaming is better than bad gaming.

Wulfen will get blown to pieces first unless they've all got storm shields.

Even with storm shields he seems to roll alot of 6's on the D chart.

You can't list build around that. Besides, he'd still killing a wulfen with a d weapon. You are winning that exchange.

when I see wulfen I see a land raider, and a landraider redeemer happens to be a huge threat to the bikes and warp spiders str 6 ap3 wound on 2's and pick up models if you catch em luckily move 12, flat out and potms that template at something that looked safe (after dropping off the party of 10 wulfen)

note this is academic avice from other people using this on me and me watching other games, I do not play space wolves)

Templates don't work vs warp spiders.

yes and no, they can flicker jump but then they are neutered the following turn as they cannot warp jump, also they can lose a spider to the warp. the biggest trick with warp spiders is toremember that 12 inch range and keep the pressure so they cannot risk getting close.

That list of your friends is horribly boring, and I'd hate to play against it, but I'd go out of my way to table a person like that.

If you want to beat it you'll have to bring your own cheese which is usually not even fun.

Flying Daemon circus, with magnus, 2++ re rolling screamer star.

Space marine Battle company with grav.

If you have space wolves, literally bring a thundercav unit and psychic buff it to have FnP, and re rolling saves and chase down all his stuff and kill it.

Seriously though. Wraithknight and 3 riptides and not even in a tournie. What a guy.

however my number 1 tip.

Don't play against him anymore.

Well, at least that guy hasn't taken a Culexus Assassin along with the Eldar-Tau Army to nullify invisibility or other psychic buffs the SM/SW army may bring, so psychic deathstar can be fourth choice to deal with that, the Riptide wing and WK is a pretty standout targets, if you can survive their shooty and choppy (by invisibility maybe), and shoot them in return with lots Gravs Cannons, you may stand a pretty good chance.

Utilizing Psychic Shriek against a Riptide Wing and/or Wraithknight.

Get Invisibility on some form of deathstar and go smash. Librarian Conclave on bikes seem to do well.

Even with Interceptor, you will still get cover saves, just deep strike into terrain and weather the storm. If you are deep striking, overwhelm him with this. It can be very difficult to deal with 4-5 Drop Pods coming in turn 1.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I gotta ask, did the dude even build his models custom or paint them well?

See I can tolerate a cheese list if they put in some artistic craft or work of some kind... if it's just a bunch of gak that's primered at most I'd just tell the dude I'm not gonna waste time unpacking models.

...or if the dude is just a pedantic donkey-cave, then their list and artistic skill don't matter...

EDIT: I like what was done with the censor software, it's like hilariously bad dubbing
