I'm a long time DA player with a good 4k points painted up. I also have 4 or 5 units in various stages of assembly and paint. I have also just painted my first two troop choices for a Black legion army and have quite a few models either on sprues or being assembled.

So I guess my question is, why paint or assemble new units that could change drastically when 8th drops?

I totally get painting units because you like them, I do the same from time to time but ultimately I am player. I want to know what weapons do what , how many models in a unit can I afford , which HQ's I want to play etc etc.....

This hobby is very expensive and time consuming (And I love it to bits!!) so I don't want to waste time and money on something that I might want to change or not even include in my army.

What are you guys going to do? Hold fire on buying/assembling/painting ? Or just carry on as usual?

I'm going to carry on with my Ravenwing army, it's not like they would have been top-tier in 7th anyway. However, if you are pretty concerned with having an optimal army that is very competitive then not only would I wait until after 8th is released, I would wait until a meta settles in. And then they will change it in a year with a GHB anyway

Hold off some imo. 8th isnt too far away and getting at least a basic feel for how units/weapons have changed will allow you to build them as you see fit.

Bear in mind however the basic ruleset on release will be followed by a dedicated DA codex in time so it wont be perfect. But better than building your predator with LCs only to discover HBs now rule the roost.....

I'm not competitive in the slightest but if I'm building a HQ unit, I want to know what it does, what I can arm it with and how it will play on the battlefield. All of this adds the how fluffy it is imo.

Play style is very important to me.

I'm moving forward with my army under the assumption that each weapon will still do the same thing, or meet the same purpose, even if its performance is different. I think it's safe to say that meltas will still be meltas, plasma will still be plasma etc.

Eh, I'm still building my BA army up. I'm just going to magnetize everything and keep going so that i can easily change my models as the game changes.

Dark Angels - 8000
Blood Angels - 4000
Astra Militarum - 2000

I mostly buy stuff I think is cool anyway, but I have been buying more fluff books instead of models recently. When I get my copy of SW:A I might start basing my purchases off of that if 8th still hasn't dropped.

I've got more stuff than I can paint anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

If you want to start a new army, ask yourself this: if this army is garbage in 7e, would you still want to start it even if there were no new edition coming? If the army is strong in 7e, would you still want to play it if it's weak in 8e? If it's weak in 7e, but ends up strong in 8e, are you still interested?

If so, go ahead. Collect what you like.

If you want to collect what wins, then wait to find out what wins in the new meta.

I'm just going forward, as was always my plan. I have Eldar and BA units to paint. I likely won't buy anything drastically new until 8th hits, but I have plenty of Dire Avengers, Bikes, and WS along with a few Wraith Guard to paint, which I will be doing regardless. And BA aren't BA without at least a few token ASM, SG, and DC, not to mention more tac suqads so I'm not worried about getting them getting nerfed either. At the end of the day, they're all things I'll use in some form or another regardless, so may as well paint them.

I'm adding a few models to my nearly complete Necron collection, like a deceiver and a tomb sentinel which I got on the cheap because they are awful in this edition, but I'm not adding to my dark angels until I get a better lay of the land for 8th ed.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

Since Dark Vengeance is rotating out I would probably grab a few of those if you want the exclusive models within. Otherwise either collect for the looks or wait.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I'm just gonna get the last stuff to finish my grey Knights. I wanted two more dreadknights on top of the second attack toaster, but seeing as I expect dread Knights to get nerfed into being more underturned, imma wait back and see.

If you aren't aiming at tournaments...and you're not a "win at all costs, even if my opponent has no fun" assbag, then yes. Collect models. Collecting models because you like them and they're cool really should take more precedence than their effectiveness on the tabletop.

That being said, don't build units aimed at any kind of current Meta (i.e. I can fit X number of plasma guns in this unit, etc.). But basic units for your army? Sure.

I am holding off and building painting for 40k and focusing on AoS and Shadow Wars.

Had way too many armies get gimped by new editions or soon after in a new codex.

I think it's a fine time to start a new faction if you like the models. If you are more focused on the rules, then wait for those. Although as has been mentioned, with annual updates, the focus should be on the figures you like more than ever.

If you enjoy painting and building models in your spare time, I see no reason to stop. If you factor in unit/model tabletop efficiency in what you build/paint and ok with holding off until 8th edition, then you may be better served until you have a better understaning of the next edition.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
