Hey everyone, I'm painting up some Thousand Sons and wanted to experiment with a kind of 'glowing runes' effect on the bolter casings. I was wondering if anyone can give me some references or advice on how to do this effect without making it too dramatic? Thanks fellow Dakka-dwellers

1) Always do glows with colours lighter than whatever they're going on.

2) Remember light doesn't go round corners*.

3) Use THIN paint with very little on the brush. You will mostly be glazing, and you need it to be smooth and subtle to work properly.

*: The exception is 'bloom' which represents 'lens flare' of the light source. Generally you want to keep this on a single surface only, and use it sparingly - it is a view-dependent effect and from some angles it will look wrong.

Generally to make something glow, you reverse the shading technique.

So, where usually you'd do the hollows darker and the edges lighter, for a glowing effect you'd make the hollows lightest and the edges darkest.

This might be of help (about 19 minutes in)

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

I've just supported the Permanent European Union Citizenship initiative. Please do the same and spread the word!
