You are buying too many upgrades. 50 points for the Rangers weapons then you get melee and pistol upgrades for the alpha.

Typically you pick what a unit will be doing, in this case shooting from max distance. Then using the points for more units instead of getting melee and short range upgrades.

Good point,

I've revisited the list, removing alot of the upgrades. Using the points ive added another dragoon into the formation.

Without a Dominus or Cawl to wring the synergy out of the Peltast shields, you are wasting points that could have gone into Rangers, Vanguards, or special weapons. Definitely add a Dominus Maniple. Drop the Phosphor Serpenta and all of the melee weapons (this army does NOT NOT NOT want to get into assault) and Ballistarii (not as efficient as you would think). In fact, I don't think I see any competitive non-WarCon Skitarii lists that take upgrades except for special weapons.

Skitarii Maniple (620)
10x Skitarii Vanguard (Warlord) - Plasma Caliver
5x Skitarii Vanguard - 2x Arc Rifle
15x Secutarii Peltasts - Omnispex
Onager Dunecrawler - Neutron Laser with Cognis Heavy Stubber
2x Sydonian Dragoon

Dominus Maniple (380)
Tech-Priest Dominus
5x Skitarii Rangers - Omnispex, 2x Transuranic Arquebus
Onager Dunecrawler - Icarus Array

Basically, the Dominus can mark enemies within 18" of it with Target Data Upload ontop of scrying any vehicle on the battlefield to allow your Arquebus unit to re-roll hits AND penetration (so you pretty much get to delete vehicles of your choice). You can attach the Dominus to the Peltasts to tank for them (5 Peltasts let you re-roll armor saves of 1, and Dominus has a 2+ armor save) while also benefitting from the Scout to redeploy. The unit with the Caliver has Preferred Enemy and Warlord bonuses, so it is unlikely to Get Hot or get instantly wiped. They can handle a variety of threats. The unit with the Arc Rifles is for popping vehicles that get too close. The Dunecrawlers support both teams from the backfield. The Dragoons can be sent to attack long range shooters or tie up scary things in CC.

If there isn't any air to worry about, you can swap the Dominus Dunecrawler's Icarus Array to a TL Phosphor Blaster, which kills MEQs and synergizes with the rest of the Dominus Maniple.

Thats really given me some food for thought. being relatively new to ad mech and having never fielded the peltasts in anger I feel like an information sponge right now!

I'm relatively new myself. I think I've soaked up at least a hundred hours of battle reports, articles, and forum posts by now.

I think the key to any army is to identify core strengths and weaknesses as well as value multipliers. Skitarii have great point efficiency in terms of wound output, but mediocre durability and poor mobility (lack of transports and bikes). Their value multipliers come from their interaction with Cult Mechanicus and Imperial Knights, which essentially contain their HQ and super heavy options. The three viable options for competitive play right now seem to be WarCon (free points, Canticles), GrandCon (Dunecrawler spam), and shooty relic spam (Cawl/Dominus + Infantry). This army falls into the last group.
