So, I had a game the other day and we were discussing how exactly Flip Belts work. Rules say they treat all terrain as open ground for movement, but can't end in impassible terrain. Fluff wise, they give the bearer super acrobatic-ness and weightlessness.

If I am standing on one side of a building (say a 6" cube for simplicity), and wish to move to the other side of the building, would I move 7" or so to go directly though the building, or would I still have to go "around" it. Alternately, if I wanted to move to the top edge opposite to where my model currently is, would I move a 6" (top down) line, an 8.5" diagonal line, or 6" up and 6" over to get to that spot.

Essentially, the rules as I read them allow Harlequins to "teleport" from place to place, and while that makes sense for the Grey Knight Teleporter and possibly the Necron Phase Shifter, it seems a bit gamey for the Harlequins.

(If it matters, I'm the one playing Harlequins)

You would still need to move it isn't a teleport, but you are not slowed by the terrain

That's kinda what I figured. What is the difference between these three items then?

GK Personal Teleporter
"A fighter with a personal teleporter treats all terrain as open
ground for the purposes of movement, but can’t end its
move on impassable terrain."

Harlequin Flip Belt
"A fighter with a flip belt treats all terrain as open ground
for the purposes of movement, but can’t end its move on
impassable terrain."

Necron Phase Shifter
"A fighter equipped with a phase shifter may move through
all terrain as if it was open ground. It may not finish its
move inside impassable ground."

Only the Necron one says you can move 'Through' terrain

The others say you treat terrain as open

The flip-belt has a very important role in SWA, it identifies gamey tendencies in players!

I've seen this much debated of the SWA FB pages and the rules are very clear;

Flip-belt treats all terrain as Open Terrian, but can not finish in impassible terrain ---> Open Terrain allow a model to move at its full rate across it. I don't see anyone trying to pass through the table top or floors...

So you Harlie can run up a wall but not pass through it (unless they run up to a suitable window to pass through. In the OPs example the Harlie would run up and over the cubed building unless ther were suitable openings in it to allow it to pass through.

Hahaha, I like it.

There is a problem with the wording though. If you have a 6" cubic building, isn't the entire volume of the building considered terrain, or is it just the surfaces that you can see?

Or to put a different spin on it, if the Harlequins must move -over- terrain (which makes the most sense!); does that mean Grey Knights must also move -over- terrain? Their teleporters don't actually teleport them?

At any rate, it looks like this has been submitted to GW for FAQing (along with a bunch of other stuff) over on the Facebook page

The way I understand it is that with all 3 upgrades you dont suffer movement penalties (half/quarter movement, moving up and over obstacles, etc.) because the fighter treats all terrain as open ground. However, the Flip Belt and Teleporter both state "treats all terrain as open ground for the purposes of movement", while the Phase Shifter specifies "may move through all terrain as if it was open ground". So beyond the movement penalties, a Harlequin or Grey Knight actually has to be able to go that way and fit, while a Necron can just walk through obstacles.

A Harlequin, a Grey Knight, and a Necron walk into a bar surrounded by difficult terrain. Each moves freely, ignoring the movement penalties. The Harlequin flips over the rubble and through a side window to get into the bar. The Grey Knight teleports through the ruins of the doorway. The Necron walks through the solid back wall of the bar. Chaos ensues.

Thats how we are playing it anyway.
