The models I currently own (Legion battlebox/Thragrosh1/Angelius/Typhon/Heavy Beast kit magnetized/Shepardx2/Forsakenx1/Warspears full unit

I am looking to get a unit of infantry but not sure what to grab. I believe that the swordsman and archers come in one package and you can magnetize them. Then there's the legionaries and other choices. The two other legion players at my shop say that legionaries aren't that good in comparison to swordmen.

what would you suggest?

Get the warspear chieftan. It's necessary to make the unit viable. With Thaggs they are POW 17 against their prey target.

Given those 'casters I'd say swordsmen over Legionnaires. They don't necessarily need a lot of buffs to work (MAT7 Weapon Master light infantry can smash up quite a lot if you get good charges off), but you've got DEF buffs to get them in and STR buffs to get them punching way above their weight class.

(That said the Warspear Chieftain is pretty much mandatory; going from MAT/RAT 6/5 to 8/7 against your Prey target is immensely useful. Having two POW17 attacks/model (one with an extra die for charging) the turn you Assault is just icing on the cake.)

...Yes and no, generally. Swordsmen are more useful in general pick-up kill-things games, and certainly with those 'casters, but if you've got the support you can make Legionnaires an incredibly irritating zone-clogging unit for a turn to buy other things more time to get into position. They're not going to survive anything the other guy throws at them, but if you were using Fyanna2 (for instance) run them up into a zone in pods of two with Iron Flesh up, pop Iron Zeal, and feat, and you're looking at a DEF15/ARM22 unit that's basically immune to infantry-clearing tools and is going to require the other guy to either commit some pretty heavy stuff to killing them or leave them alone.

Would you be willing to consider a Minions unit? I got a unit of Croak Raiders in a trade and was pleasantly surprised at the utility inherent in the unit. With AD and their oil attack, they can easily boost any fire damage that your units might do, which buffs Thagrosh, Typhon, and 2 of the 3 heavy legion beasts, in addition of being able to set fire to the target themselves.
