I was thinking abogenres to ut some of my gaming preferences the other day, and it made me curious about what other people feel are interesting game genres to play? Since there are so many different genres out there, I decided to not use a poll and let people simply tell me what they like.

When it comes to genres, I play:

Actually, although i love 40k's universe, i'm otherwise not that fond of sci-fi.

What i really prefer is skirmish sized genre, in historical settings, and focused on ground combat.

Still a primitive in 6th, but hey!

My interests are currently leaning towards post-apocalyptic settings, modern settings (post-apoc, horror, modern war, etc.) and alternate history.

Giant Mecha will always interest me, but I haven't smashed some big robots together in a while so that is a dormant but eternal interest of mine.

at least that is my constant. i do like the sprinkling of post apoc ala mad max and i do like 40k.

Futuristic is probably my favourite genre, and I like game sizes of <20 models or so.

I used to be a big fan of fantasy, but I just haven't found anything recently that really does it for me. Closest there is Blood Bowl.

I'd love to play a futuristic styled dungeon crawler, in the lines of the old Warhammer Quest or Shadows of Brimstone.

Scope: Platoon sized and under.
Era: WWII and beyond save Revolutionary War/Wild West

I like games where individual troops mostly matter and the game isn't dominated by vehicles for the most part. I game at 28mm to 32mm, so I also don't want to crowd the table or table an exorbitant amount of time to get in a game.

As for tactical thinking, I like WWII and modern tactics, or least, games that give the illusion of using modern combat tactics. It can be actual WWII, Weird War II, Cold War, modern-ultramodern and even sci-fi, but I don't want ancients/Napoleonics/WWI in SPAACCCEEE! style games for the most part. This even extends to Warhammer 40K and why I don't like 'standard' 1850 point games. I much perfer 1000 points or even Heralds of Ruin's Kill Team instead. I think helps 40K get away from feeling too WWI to me.

The exceptions are America based historicals (save the Civil War) which I have a soft spot for my nation's military history and the Wild West. Better yet would be a Weird West game like Deadlands becoming a full fledged miniatures game even if it is just a re-hash of the Great Rail Wars game.

Sci Fi, Alternate History and Fantasy. I prefer skirmish, but army size is okay if the rules are streamlined enough.

I don't find modern, historical or post apocalyptic very interesting. For sizes, these days I find with the hobby time I have for painting I'm better off with skirmish sized games, though I'm not completely averse to an army sized game. But if I'm playing with that many models, the rules better be streamlined to get a game in in the same time it takes for a skirmish game.

In general, fantasy of various kinds, followed by historical (especially ancient history, especially especially mesopotamia). Then sci-fi.

I have pretty much zero interest in modern stuff, or wwii.

Thinking about it, i think i prefer board games for the more ancient or real world based gaming.

Hiding behind terrain

Clean/modern/not too distant future scifi/cyberpunk skirmish size. Got sick of the grimdark and modern scifi terrain ideas are more enjoyable to come up with.

Any fantasy skirmish setting thats not steampunk. Always hated fantasy steampunk and victorian inspired fantasy for some reason.
X-Wing for space dogfights.

Havent been doing anything in the hobby in months sadly. Gotta finish all my half baked terrain. Too many of them laying around.

Ha, same here- I'd love a cyber punk game that wasn't Infinity. Mainly it feels too complicated for me to grasp plus the local playerbase put me off :/

I like 40k, but apart from that, tend to not be a fan of the distant future sci-fi. I love the near-future of Afterlife.

I used to enjoy fantasy, but the switch from The Old World to Age of Sigmar left me feeling detached and not caring enough to even bother finding out more. I like the simplicity and almost free-form stuff of Frostgrave.

I want to love some of the other games out there, but don't quite. Some of the Wild West stuff should be great, but never quite grabs me. I've borrowed a copy of Blood and Plunder to read because Pirates are awesome, so I am hoping that will get me involved.

I just don't understand the appeal of Batman, Marvel, etc, so I'll never play those.

I really want to find a Samurai game to love, but all of them seem to go off on tangents into extreme oni/demons and waste their potential.

Game style

I prefer platoon level games. I play some larger scale 40k games (though never Apocalypse) and enjoy them a lot, and I play skirmish-size games, such as Necromunda and Frostgrave, which I probably enjoy more, on average. My sweet-spot though, if Afterlife, where I will have between 20-30 models in a typical game.

I prefer dice mechanics, as I have yet to come across a card-mechanic that I like. I'm not against the idea, I just haven't found one I like yet. I don't love overly-simplified games with, for example, rock-paper-scissor mechanics for absolutely everything. However, I think d6 is often too crude for anything other than the largest scale games, else it is just too common for the dice to affect things more than people. I


Sadly, I do not like the look of Infinity - everything looks stretched to me, and over-posed. I prefer a realistic scale and posing, once again such as you get with Afterlife. I like a lot of Hasslefree models too. I prefer things gritty to pretty, which I think is another reason Infinity doesn't quite suit me. If I am moving away from an almost true-scale, then I would rather go in the direction of heroic scale, but not always as far as GW take it, and certainly I dislike a cartoonish look. I think that is my issue with Maelstrom's Edge, which I feel guilty for not liking. The Epirian Contractors look like they belong in an 80s kids carton to me, and the Karist maybe an early 90s one.


28mm is my favouorite, though I love 6mm Epic too. I can't get my around around 32-35mm stuff like Batman and so on. I prefer to focus on Infantry than vehicles in 28mm, but having said that, I am not against vehicles as transports. I prefer infantry skirmish to large scale tank battles though. One or two tanks, yes, a line of 12 Leman Russes doesn't excite me.


This is the most important thing for me. I pretty much only play 40k/30k in campaigns where battles form part of a larger narrative. I am helping to write scenarios for Afterlife, which I always try to string together into a campaign.

I love developmental campaigns, such as you find in Necromunda and Blood Bowl. Even Frostgrave. For me, this is the best thing you can do for a game - allow you to tell a story.

Though my guards may sleep and my ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I'd say I'm pretty open minded about genres I could probably be interested in pretty much any setting or scale provided the rules were to my taste. If I had to narrow things down it would be something like this:


Fantasy: "Generic" fantasy is a type of setting I very much enjoy especially when the rules allow a lot of leeway in creating a force to play with, whether that's a complex system like Song of Blades and Heroes or generic units with a few special rules like Dragon Rampant.
Historical: I do like a lot of historical miniature ranges, not really explored much beyond WW2 (Bolt Action) and the huge Perry ACW box (note to self build and paint that thing!). I really ought to look at trying some more historicals in the future.
Science Fiction: Yes please, whether it's over the top science fantasy or hard sci fi I'll probably be interested in it. Provided the rules are good and again provide a level of customisation that lets me really personalise my forces.
Others: Stuff like steampunk or other more niche genres I will try but I don't go out of my way too much for them.


28mm+: Skirmish to Reinforced Platoon/Warband, any larger and I think that 28mm becomes far too unwieldy. Even big platoon games are too much for my liking, especially 40k since 6th edition which is a pity because I love the universe.
10mm to 15mm: At this scale pretty much anything goes, sure individually based minis can be a pain at this scale but the pay off is a much more realistic ground scale on a 6'x4' table.
Smaller: Probably got to be Company/Regimental games only at this point. I know there are some people who play with single based 6mm minis but that's not for me and my fat useless hands.
Naval/Air Scales: I know basically nothing about naval or air combat so I'm not sure what game size to aim for. Did play Firestorm Armada for a bit but only played with a basic fleet and never really got to grips with the system.

The rulesets I most want to get to the table at the moment are Dragon Rampant and Clash of the Fringe, both of which do seem to encourage to some extent the old attitude of throwing a collection of minis onto a table and playing a game. They go about it in different ways but it's an approach to wargaming that I do like a lot. Others I like the look of include; Black Ops, Ronin, Rogue Stars and Sharp Practice, I'm sure I could list a load more if I wanted.

One final thing I would like to bring up is miniature design. I'm an average painter at best, I can do stuff like washes and highlights well enough but anything more advanced is tricky for me. This can be something of an issue with a lot of modern miniatures being absolutely crammed full of tiny details that I have to either ignore or give up on painting that particular mini. I would love to see more miniatures with the simplicity of 80s and 90s sculpts but up to modern standards. This complaint applies mostly to fantasy or science fiction minis but there are some historicals I would avoid simply because they are too complex for me to paint to a standard I'm happy with. Of course with my preference for rulesets that are independent of miniature manufacturers I can pick and choose what I work on but there are definitely some games out there that I want to try along with their attached miniature range but haven't because I don't feel up to painting those overly complex designs. To give an example of a current project, I'm painting up some of the old Void 1.1 Junkers from Scotia Grendel to use in Clash on the Fringe. It's a small forces of 2 squads of 5 infantry, a light vehicle and a character. So it's an easily achievable project using very simple to paint minis which I will be using with a ruleset that allows me complete customisation of the stats, equipment and special rules of my force. That's my kind of project.

Comes off the back of 19 or so years of cyberpunk rpg playing. 40k initially tied into that genre back in the day, but when they went all grimdark church-in-space crap, I started to fall out with it.

my primary love is vehicles vs. vehicles, whether it's tanks, planes, naval ships, starfighters, capital ships, mecha or even autodueling.

I also enjoy WW2, sci-fi or fantasy skirmish games - including dungeon delving. I've also wanted a good ship vs. ship pirate game for a long time.

More than anything, I tend to enjoy co-operative games moreso than head-to-head games.

There's a huge visual appeal, for me, for a 6mm regiment-level game fighting over a varied battlefield. Something like epic with urban and rural areas, and the full range of combined arms - aerospace units, tanks, infantry, giant robots if that's what you like, etc, etc. I like painting 28mm tanks, walkers, etc, but when they're actually on the board they generally don't move around much - plonk them somewhere useful and shoot things.

Likewise for Fantasy; I miss Warmaster (or rather, I wish my friends had been into it when it was available, instead of them all regretting it now).

At the other end of the scale, I like team-level games like Infinity, although I think there's too much detail there, what with the dozens of pages of hacking programs, weapons and suchlike. If they swapped a lot of that for more scenarios, I'd be happy. The six in the book are OK, if a little bland, but the ones in Campaign: Paradiso were much more interesting.

The genres I am interested in playing are the genres I'm generally interested in. Ancient warfare, fantasy and some Sci-Fi.

What I like about a genre (themes, tropes, imagery, etc) affects the kind of games I like to play in that genre. A game still needs to have decent rules though.

My interest in ancient warfare means I prefer historical games that are more concerned with realism than games I like from other genres.

The things from fantasy that stuck with me when I read them as a boy are what I look to recreate in games. Those things include epic and romanticised battles (like like the charge of Rohirrim at Minas Tirith) or the band of adventures on a quest (so D&D). That all means fantasy skirmish games (I don't mean AoS) don't appeal.
40k feels more like fantasy IN SPAAAAACE than Sci-Fi (not saying anyone else should, just how i feel about it). I would not play 40k if I couldn't play daemons and if I could play other games as often as I can get games of 40k.

Sci-Fi is a much more recent interest and I enjoy the stuff aimed at adults, the philosophy that those stories explore (when is and AI a person? and so forth) and more complicated motivations and politics (like Dune). That translates to the tabletop with Infinity. The fluff and setting with the special ops team setup fits in my mind.

-Mostly 28mm in Skrimish and Platoon level with various rulesets.
-I also do some 10mm Mech combat at platoon( Mech Attack) and company/Batallion (Alpha Strike) levels

-All 28mm at Skirmish (Song of Blades), Platoon (Runwars and Dragon Rampant) and Company (Kings of War) Levels.

I also dabble in Sci-Fantasy (40k universe)
-Though I don't play 40k currently, I do Skirmish (Necromunda, ITEN, soon Shadow War) , Platoon (Warengine, soon Warpath firefight) and sometimes even Company level with the original Warpath rules for big battles.

Post Apoc.
-Nearly always at the Skirmish Level. I've used alot of rulesets, but my favorite is Nuclear Renaissance. I'm probably going to do a WreckAge campaing this summer.

-Occasionally we do a big multiplayer zombie game. We've used Nuclear Renaissance the last couple years but will probably use a variant of the Walking Dead rules this year.

Currently focussed on WW2. Thing that's hitting home for me is if you build German units for Battlegroup, you've got German units usable in other WW2 games.

40K is on hold for me. Just hasn't been hitting home with me lately. Love the lore behind it, but the rules have never really clicked with me. What I've seen of 8th, however, may change that.

Fantasy is always a big draw for me. Locally, seems like Dragon Rampant is gaining steam, and I have to say I like the rules, though I haven't had a chance to play yet.

Fantasy - medium scale maneuvers based games - Kings of War is my current poison. Older editions of Warhammer are also up there, as is Battlesystem, by TSR, back in the day.

Fantasy - skirmish - Mordheim has long been my drug of choice, and remains one of my favorite games of all time. I have not yet played Frostgrave, but it looks very good.

SF - skirmish - Deadzone and Necromunda are about tied for first place in this category, GorkaMorka was also good, but needed more variety.

SF - medium scale - Striker II. Soldier's Companion (the mass combat game for the Space: 1889 setting - with the most brutal initiative system that I have ever seen.)

Low Fantasy is arguably my favourite genre. I also don't particularly like historicals as I do historical research for a living and want to do something else for fun. Equally alternate history has a definite appeal. Science fiction I prefer mass battles and space fleets to skirmishes.

Historicals, with Gates of Antares as scifi exception and KoW as Fantasy sidestep.

Most played : Bolt Action, afrika korps, British commandos, Finns for Winter war and Continuation war plus the required baddies...

Also often : Black Powder, recently played American war of independence campaign.

Now starting : Pike and Shotte : English civil war, then 30 year war.

This years event and painting now : Normans for Battle of Hastings, we'll have a six player event on this soon at my cottage.

Other fun systems : Saga and Congo are fun systems for casual gaming.

I'd like to play Flames of War, but no time for that :(
