I've been looking at painting up some sort of starfighter or sci fi dogfighter miniatures. I have plenty of X-Wing I'm slowly customising but I was looking at something more. I have some of those Silent Death ships which are cheap and cheerful but are there any other large size fighters out there? Or large spaceship models that have that dogfighter look? I'm not particularly tied to a setting so anything is a good shout.

The Bandai Mecha Collection has a bunch of Battleship Yamato and Macross star fighters. They are cheaper through HLJ sometimes, but not too bad on Amazon.

There was a Kickstarter for Silent Void or something like that, but the fighters are not yet available.

The old plastic Silent Death ships are fun and easy to paint. They get a vote from me.

There's also a whole line of metals that go with it.

Dropzone Commander also had a few 10mm scale fighters.

Depending on what you're looking for there's a lot of things on the market. A lot of the time, as long as the miniatures is the right size, the scale doesn't matter.

The Shattered Void miniatures from White Dragon are rather pretty, although I'm not sure exactly what's for sale at present (I bought one or two of their ships at Salute a few years back)

Ground Zero Games and Brigade models have extensive ranges of spaceships. They're intended to be large capital ships, but some would work well as fighters.

There's also quite an extensive range of Star Wars extended universe ships on Shapeways - all the things that FFG hasn't got around to making yet.

Brigade's fighters are terrific, too: http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/SquadronCommander/Blister%20Packs.html

You can also pick up the ship minis designed for the FASA Renegade Legion: Interceptor game

http://www.pfc-cinc.com/rl_spacefighters.html

and the grav tanks from the Renegade Legion: Centurion game might also be worth a look as some could stand in for ship or be converted to do so

I can't claim all the credit, as I only realised these were still around recently thanks to another dakka user, Korthu down in a thread in Misc SF Games
