Here is today's work, the mysterious Callidus assassin that has been assigned to follow this Black templar crusade.
Still looking for feedback so i can improve my painting skills and understanding.

You're doing a great job - your blending and shading with the black is very good. My suggestion would be to introduce a bit more contrast. Since your models are already black I would try painting things like the weapons, or the hair of the assassin, different colors.

@Luciferian Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to put some more colors on tomorrow's models, probably neophytes or terminators.

Here are some black templar neophytes, the crusade's recruits.
With some conversions to make them look less like angry Stephen Harpers and more like space squires.
As usual, feel free to leave any advices or impressions

Again, looking great and your shading is on point. I like the cloth portions because they bring in a lot more contrast.

Yes, i think you're right, i wasn't sure about the clothing's color but i think it came out okay.
Also I've just started working on my terminators, i'll try to post them tomorrow if i can finish them by then... i did make some slight conversion on those as well

Those guys I like a lot as well because they have a couple of extra colors to make them more interesting. Even with the first couple of models you posted you could tel you are a talented painter, but having models that are nearly 100% black sells both you and the models short. Anyway, doing a great job, the red and gold details add a lot on those guys.

Being a Deathwatch fanatic I truly understand the hardships of making a primarliy black model stand out. You have done an amazing job of making the white pop on these models. I would though make sure you add some trim work to the armor, even adding just a hue of red to the armor will take the armor to the next step of just cleaning up some slight detail work. Alos on the power armor get in there and give the eyes some brigher color just to draw that attention to head woudl work. Still some beautiful models.

SGrimhart Yes now that you mention it i can see that the eyes are subtle at best.. however i am unsure what you meant by the trim work... like brighter edge highlights?

Yes, on the power armor if you take like a gray or something and just drybrush to hit the edges of the armor then use a nuln oil wash it will just break up the black and yet keep it dark. It just gives the model a almost extra dimension of detail. It is just a thought.

@SGrimhart Hmm but i did edge highlight them with gray... maybe the gray I used is too dark and not noticeable enough?

@Lovebeard, I see it a little bit around the shield and once zoomed in you can kind of see it on the helmet. Next time try a shade lighter just for those edges to pop the models still look bad azz!

Here's an old model I stripped and finished lately.
The emperor's champion, he gave me some trouble i'll admit and i'm unsure of the result but i can't put my finger on whats the problem exactly

Edit: I also added a new picture with different lighting, still experimenting with taking photos of miniatures. Let me know wich one you think is better

The pictures are a bit unclear, need some more light I think. The emperors champion looks pretty good from what I can see though.
As somebody has suggested above try a spot colour, something bright to stand out on a dark model.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Yes I struggle with my lighting since all i have is a desk lamp and the sun, maybe i should invest in some equipment?
However I am confused about that spot colour you speak of, could you give me an example of what that could've been on the champion?

It may just be the lighting but your model looks quite dark, a spot colour is something that adds a brighter element to the model. In your instance it could be a glowing green on the sword, or a brighter red on the purity seals.
All that being said I still really like what you have done.

@Huron Black Heart I see what you mean, thank you for the feedback i'll keep it in mind. I'll also purchase some equipment to make my pictures brighter, since i'm planning to post more models as I finish them.

Hello Lovebeard, Your Black Templars look like they are getting ready to get Medieval on Heretics.

Your Terminator Knights look great! The Emperor's Champion is fantastic! :-)

They look great, making a black model look good is difficult at best! I think the red on the terminators is a little too dark though, a brighter highlight would make them pop a lot more, I also love the glow on the power weapons

I think you're right, i should highlight the red with a very bright one, that might make it pop more. I'll mix something up, thank you for the feedback.

I think that what he means is to maybe chose a color like yellow or silver or light bronze/gold for accessories and maybe use some silver/grey to represent wear on the armor at the edges to give the model more contrast between the layers of black and to soften the contrast between white and black. Personally I think the idea of the armor wear as this can always be added long after you think that the paintjob is already "done".

I am not sure if you need more equipment. In my experience, the position of the light source relative the light sensor in your camera makes a huge difference. One way to change things is to change the photo setting manually, so that the sensor is less sensitive to the light source, the camera allows more light in and the picture looks brighter. Another way is to cover the sensor with masking tape or your finger and to experiment with what comes out, and another way is to change where you place your light source so that the camera sensor is not exposed to too much bright light.

@jeff white I haven't tried doing armor wears and battle damage yet , it might be a good next step, time to watch some tutorials.

I can see that I have much to learn still, all i have is a cellphone's camera so i don't know if i can do all these things with it. Also my desk lamp is very yellow so i find it hard to use as a reliable lighting source...is that problematic or am i just inexperienced?

Its me again, got some more free time so I tried my hand at some terrain to spice up eventual battlefields, please feel free to leave any C&C

I will be back soon with finished black templar initiates to lead the neophytes.
