hey guys, being excited for 8th edition like many others, I have recently obtained what I would concider a decent starting lot of orks second hand, here is what I have gotten:
120 boyz (half slugga and half shooota)
60 Grethcins + 6 runtherds
3 meganobz
1 Trukk
2 deff dredds
15 nobz
10 Burna Boyz
a pain boy
a warboss
obviously things are about to change shortly, but I was wondering if this is a good start for the base line ork army?

Yes its a very solid start, good number of boys/grots, some elite units too.
Probably missing a few transports if you want to go wagon rush or armor up but with 8th around the corner its a good base to start from.
Wait a month, see what gets love from 8th and swap/trade for whats needed then.

I would get/convert up trukkz and battle wagons.

Also, a lot of the elite boyz can be made from stock boyz and some bitz.

Kamo paint for kommandoz, rokkit launchas for tankbustaz, those spare burns bitz from the Lootaz for burna boyz.

You have enough to run a good foot horde already, but that's not my playstyle. I have good feelings for Orks coming up. No fall back and assaulting units striking first helps with their two biggest weaknesses so far.

Loot some wagons. Get some big mek guns. Convert a killa force field. Stick it around the dredz to walk up behind the boys. Great army and some good advice from previous posters. I personally like the truck model but find the truck rush army too common. Add a truck or two but remember that looted wagons can transport troops too.

Personally I like the battlewagon model a lot so would probably start with one of those. I also like the morkanaut so would add one of those if funds are available or a second hand naut available on the cheap. In sum I would advise adding variety and using your infantry to support this variety. Then again I am interested in a collection and converting models more than a competitive list.

Yes it is, you only lack transports. With some vehicles you can also play decently in mid-large formats like 1850-2000 points.

Probably, depending on how the next edition handles vehicles.
