Do I put the blast templates down centred on the marine that's using it say/ or the sponsoon of a leman russ?

Gets hot doesn't mean the weapon fires at the user, you just take a single wound/glance on the model (saves allowed) and the gun doesn't shoot that turn.

It doesn't so much "explode" as "melt".

WH40k: Space Marine does a reasonably good visualisation of this; the 'vents' on the front and side of the cannon leak out the plasma medium.

In any case, gets hot is just 'you take a save', not 'you resolve an attack against yourself'.

If it was the latter, the leman russ executioner would never be damaged when it overheated.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Yeah, "gets hot" isn't the gun firing at the user, it's a dangerous but recoverable malfunction, like the plasma containment failing and the gun venting it to save itself. Or like the infamous Ross Mk.III rifle bolt flying out the back of the gun and smacking the user in the face.
