I know virtually nothing about Maelstrom's Edge. I'm a 40k player, mostly.

Sell me on Maelstrom's Edge! What makes it good, unique, fun?

Here's what I like about Maelstrom's Edge:
1. Lower model count than 40k but bigger than something like Infinity. Good mid-scale game.
2. All plastic models that are easy to convert, and very affordable.
3. The rules are airtight, as far as I can tell. I've never encountered an ambiguous situation. Also, everything can interact with everything; there's no bouncing small arms fire off of an invulnerable tank/monster
4. Every unit is useful. In fact, it feels like you're missing something when you leave a unit out.
5. Alternating activations (with a few exceptions) keep you constantly involved in the game.
6. Reinforcements help keep you in the game when you're losing, but don't have a "blue shell" effect
7. Combat is often secondary to objectives. You can definitely win without wiping out your enemy.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

That's a good summary. Lots of plastic models to tinker with is a big draw for me, and also this :

Very much so. Killing things in MEdge is (deliberately) difficult. The aim is more to pin things down while you claim your objectives.

So strategy comes down to more than just 'what's the fastest way to table your opponent?'... Which makes for a more interesting game experience, and also means that your lovingly painted models more often get to do more than sit on the table for a turn and then go back into their case...

This is not to say it's NASCAR. There definitely is combat, and you can cripple or destroy units, but the effort required means that if you just go about this willy-nilly, you'll be in for a hard slog.

Okay. Follow-up question, what'd be the best way to get into Maelstrom's Edge?

Edit: And thanks for telling me!

The starter set is good value for money. Everything you need is in there.

The Battle for Zycanthus? That starter set?

And what's the fluff of MEdge?

Edit: Did a bit of reading, seems interesting, though I'd love to hear more details. Especially on the Angels-not much was mentioned of them.

Yeah, Zycanthus. There are two factions in the starter set, and it gives you a solid backbone for building each army, plus a really good terrain sprue as well.

I hope the background creators forgive me for presenting a very basic summary of the fluff, but basically, a giant energy field/wave is travelling through the galaxy and destroying everything in its path.

Some people are trying hard to escape it, but one of the factions, a religious cult, believe that you can embrace the Maelstrom and reach salvation or heaven, but only if your faith is strong.

The fluff is good, and it plays really well.

Like people said, the starter box is fantastic, and expanding your forces is VERY affordable. I'd also recommend picking up some terrain sprues; they're a fantastic value. You'll also want a friend; the first few games will require some frequent references to the rule book.

Even when you're starting out, you'll want to read through the missions and play them. Just playing a "kill them all" doesn't show some of the aspects of the rules, and you lose some of the fun. Also, make sure you try some close combat; it will likely go REALLY poorly for someone, and defensive fire is a great mechanic that I've not seen elsewhere (and totally ate my lunch the first time I encountered it!).

If you're already a 40K player but you're looking for something else, it's possible there are already some aspects of 40K that make you uncomfortable - some niggling doubts about the game "why does it play like that?" and "why can't we XYZ?"

If that accurately describes you, you will probably find Maelstrom's Edge plays the way you wish 40K played. At least, that's what I found.

The boxed set is great value. A second box gives you enough to build substantial armies of both sides. Throw in an expansion sprue and you can probably build every unit in the game.

Okay. How do I find local stores that stock it? Because I want someone to play with, and the only local gaming store I know that does miniatures is GW.

And yes, I've already done basic googling.

I don't know if many (any) local stores carry it. You can get it from the webstore at maelstromsedge.com or probably find it at your favorite mail order source.

Yes, but then I'll have a bunch of cool minis, rules, and NO ONE TO PLAY WITH.

It doesn't matter how awesome a game is if I can't play it.

Do you know anyone else who's also interested in trying a new system and would want to buy in?

I've just moved so I'll soon be looking for people to play with. Since the game is fairly new and less mainstream than 40K, I don't expect to find players locally. I plan to look for people who'd like to play something new and I'll provide both sides to play with.

You could ask Spiral Arm to contact your local store about stocking the game, and/or post on the Medge Facebook group.
