Today the brave men and women of the Irrylian 409th made a valiant last stand against invading hordes of demons. Despite the guards valiant effort the line was breach and the planet was lost. We are still awaiting word of the status of the exterminatus.

This is not the fight I was expecting, 1d4 refereed to KDK as a horde army with a couple of big things. That was not the army he rad. There were a few cultist, but he kept them in reserve and once they came in they sticked to his side of the table. His knight was a big shock, I really wish I had brought one or both of my own. Really, a couple of knights would have made this game much easier. My manticore preformed well, getting 6 missiles out before getting taken down. His summoned demons didn't last long, 2 Chimera equal 4 heavy flamers, but; I diverted a squads of vets with meltas to make sure. Those vets would have been better served hitting the knight. Overall, the game was fast. His big units all moved 12 and as soon as they hit my line it was over. I did kill a few things and my scatter die defied the laws of probability.

Fun over all, but; man I took a beating.

A Protoss colony world

I know what you mean about the Khorne Knight. I run one of those myself in my own KDK army, and usually it is the MVP. I can't imagine trying to put Astra Militarum up against one.

Daemonkin is one of those armies that you really don't want to get close to you. They can hit like a freight train if they get into melee, and some of their best units can get there by turn 2. Against some armies (mainly Tau and Eldar), getting there is tough for them. Against a heavily mechanized Guard army, less so. It looked like your army was outmatched, as he had about as close to an optimized list as you can get with pure Daemonkin, and your list was less optimal (no insult intended). A Knight or two on your side would have made a huge difference, as you said.

I'm not sure why 1d4 would refer to KDK as a horde army. They play best as MSU to maximize Blood Tithe benefits. This also helps with target saturation. I've never run huge units with them other than the couple of times I tried out a Cabalstar (big unit of Hounds with some Black Legion Sorcerers from the Cyclopia Cabal formation attached).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Either way, it was fun. And I never run optimal list, my army is very fluffy.
