Hi Chaps,

So following guidance previously received, my brain has been whirring about what exactly I want in a LOTR army.

I was reading an article in one of my old WD regarding fighting in Mirkwood and realised that make a Dol Guldur force gave me alot of flexibility in having normal orcs, spiders, wargs and even a Nazgul in the form of Khamal the Easterling who was the garrison commander in the War of the Ring.
This also gave me the idea of converting my Moria Goblins into some sort of forest goblin or lesser orc that live amongst the twisted trees, and shallow caves of the surrounding forest.

The idea would be to replace their metal shields with wooden ones and the shards of metal that they wield as swords with a rock on a stick or a primitive axe. I could paint them in earthier shades than the black and red of the Moria goblins.

What do you reckon? Are there any mentions of goblins living in different places other than the Misty Mountains in the LOTR lore?

"goblins" are nothing more than a degenerate form of orc, not entirely a separate species, so your idea would be just fine even using the little troglodytes as is. making wooden shields and primitive weapons would look cool to me, but there is no reason they couldn't have good metal equipment from the armories of Dol Guldur. I have modified all sorts of the little buggers for "Mirkwood dwellers" for the 1 Ring RPG.

Yea I've heard that too, but the distinction seems to be greater in the films than the books. However if 'Azog the lofty' was a goblin then there can't be much difference!

I need some conversions to keep my interest, I like personalising my force! It is difficult when a lot of the miniatures are metal and with the predominance of named characters though.

Goblin isn't even a degenerate type of orc, it's just another name for orcs. But your idea works fine. There were orc compounds all over Middle Earth at most times. It's just their two main strongholds were Gundabad and Mordor. If there was a deep enough cave or dark enough part of a forest, chances are there would be orcs somewhere close by.

That's pretty cool, there is a lot more flexibility with LOTR armies than I had first thought.

I dug out the old goblin models yesterday to have a review of the conversion options , I had forgotten how small that they were!
Unfortunately that means a lot of the parts in my bits box will be useless and using green stuff will be extra fiddly.

I would quite some way to either cover up the body armour or make it look a little more rustic, as with my current paint job it looks quite shiny and finely wrought which I can't imagine forest goblins having access to.

I have a tub of leaves for scenic bases. Its like flock but its little green and brown leaves. I use it for all my WH forest goblins and it gives a really nice foresty look without having to do much to the actual mini. Its really effective stuff.

Looking for the Rest of the II Legion

This sounds awesome! I play MorĂa myself but love the idea of a more primitive breed of orc, if such a thing was possible. Almost feral...
