So with the new edition of 40k on the horizon (which is either a brave new dawn or the sky is falling in depending upon your view, IMO only time will tell) I have decided to start a new army. I have actually painted an Iron Warriors army before but that was three years ago and my standard of painting was a little lower, so I have sold that and started anew (along with a few units I have kept that will update). I am still what I would primarily call a consistent tabletop standard painter but I think the true impact comes when the whole army is put together.

I will also use the blog to continue my Deathwatch and Skitarii/Ad Mech armies.

No surprises that the main basis of the army is the Mark III Marines from the Burning Of Prospero boxed set. I have had a pretty unproductive painting year but managed to do my first CSM Squad this week. Here are the results:

Aspiring Champion with Bolt Pistol and Power Claw/Fist:

Missile Launcher (MKIV from the Calth Marines and Flamer:

And the band all together:

I also updated a Vindicator from an old Hawk Lords force of mine, what once looked like this...

Now looks like this:

So thanks for looking, I have a few plans on how the army will continue, next up are my Havocs:

So just a little update of the things I have ported over from my old IW army, they have been updated in terms of basing and a bit of cleaning/neatening up.

Warsmith:

Catahpractii Terminators:

I also have a unit of 15 Cultists with autoguns. All together that gives me a currently "legal" army of 1 HQ, 1 Elite, 2 Troops and 1 Heavy and it looks like this:

Thanks for looking.

My local FLGS re-opened the other weekend and as part of their opening weekend they had a further 10% off their already discounted stock. This lead me to buy this:

I assume that Crimson Slaughter has not been available for a while and £72 for a Land Raider, Terminators, Raptors and some additional Cultists was too good to pass up. I am nearly done painting my Havocs so should have an update soon.

Cheers War Kitten...everybody falls eventually.

Got my Havocs done, I wents with 2x Lascannons and 2x Heavy bolters, the champion has a combi flamer in case anybody ventures too close:

Heavy Bolters:

And my personal favourite Havoc:

I also got a Lord with 2 Lightning Claws done, I do not know if he will see the tabletop but I enjoyed painting him. He is a minor conversion of the Betrayal at Calth Cataphractii Termi Lord, basically a dual weapon and head swap:

I am currently working on a Helbrute and and some dual meltagun weilding Raptors. Thanks for looking.

Good stuff! Something about that HB Havoc you picked out does have a lot of personality, I think it's the fact that while the rest are getting down to some murder, he's staring into camera to make sure he looks badass!

Have made a little more progress on my IW in the form of a Dreadnou...er Helbrute armed with twin linked Lascannon and Missile Launcher. I had fun with this one, I know the miniature gets a lot of flak but I like it:

And here is the army thus far:

I have my order for Dark Imperium and a couple of the index books in so expect some Nurgle reinforcements soon.

Cheers for looking.

@Amazingturtles: The Helbrute is an odd and divisive model, but I like how he came out. With Iron Warriors you may be better off with a chaosfied standard Dreadnought but this will serve its purpose well.

@War Kitten: Cheers dude, currently have a fair bit to paint in the form of a melee CSM squad, havoc's, Terminators and a Land Raider. But I really want some bikes as I think that manoeuvrability will be vital in 8th edition.

@Talizvar: Too true! The Autocannon seems like a pretty good weapon with the new rules.

Am going to have an 8th edition demo game at my local GW tomorrow, will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the interest and kind words everyone, @DCannon4Life: No way I am brave (or good enough) to do hazard stripes on the rank and file. I am saving them for characters and larger vehicles.

So I had a little demo game at GW Coventry yesterday. No idea how balanced it was, the lists were:

Me:
10 Man Tactical Squad
5 Man Havoc Squad
5 Man Raptor Squad.

GW Employee X Deathwatch:
DW Chaplain
Venerable Dread with Plasma Cannon and power fist.
10 Man DW Squad: 1 Temie, 1 bike, 1 jump pack, Frag Cannon, Inferno Cannon, Thunder Hammer, Necrophase sword, Storm Shield etc etc.

First impression are that the rules are much more streamlined and easier to get your head around, and also a lot of fun, Marines getting saves against most weapons means that they are pretty survivable as well. And Deathwatch? Wow...so adaptable, the mixed abilities within units granting the unit special rules is awesome. I was wiped out to a man but had a few moral victories, namely my Havocs destroying the Dread, he rolled a six and it blew up taking two other deathwatch members with it and inflicting 3 mortal wounds on the Chaplain. We also had the oddity of my Havocs being the one remaining unit up a building and his squad could not charge them as his bike was still alive and they cannot ascend buildings. Eventually when the Havocs blew the Dread he elected to remove the bike in the resultant explosion and the squad finished off my final lascannon. Eventually he only had six men left to my none, but it was good fun and I am pretty stoked for this edition.

Anyway a bit more progress, I have done half of my melee CSM Squad, I am a big fan of this Aspiring Champion:

And my Raptor Squad:

Thanks for looking.

You're selling your self short if you think you can't do hazards, your work is neat, which is all it takes. The mkiii armour isn't the easiest place to start, but all those chain swords are perfect to learn on. If freehanding the lines is an issue, 2mm masking tape is a godsend. If you don't want them then fair enough, but don't tell your self you can't if actually you would prefer them.

Cheers guys, with the release of 8th edition and the indexes I have been plotting army lists and points values. With these 5 Tactical Marines I am now over 1500pts of Iron Warriors already (if you count the Cataphractii Terminators as normal ones).

And the full unit:

I have also worked out that I have over 2500 points of Blood Angels as well. To that end with my copy of Dark Imperium the Primaris Marines will also be Marines of the red variety, here is my first one:

Nothing special, but a relatively quick and simple miniature to paint. Expect more of them soon.

In the meantime I have made a unit of 5 IW Bikers with two plasma guns and a plasma pistol as well as a Biker Lord with power fist and combi-melta.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers gents, much appreciated. Apologies for the loss of some images whilst I abandon Photo****** and move over to Imgur.

A bit more progress, I have made my IW Biker Lord, nothing out of the ordinary here. He is made out of a standard bike, Mark III body, head from the Primaris Hellblaster Sgt, Power fist from a Tartaros Terminator and a Mark IV combi melta. I am happy with how he has turned out:

I also painted my first Plague Marine from Dark Imperium. Washes and the technical paints are your friend here:

And finally my Biker Aspiring Champion:

I hope to paint more Plague Marines and bikers today, thanks for looking.

Glad to finally see some death guard getting painted, everyone is so hyped with bigmarines that I think this is the first deathguard ive seen. Very well done.

Iron warriors are looking great too. What colors are you using for the bronze? My Ghar might all get another color added just to bring them closer to my iron warriors. Use them as proxy obliterators .

Pretty good idea on the Ghar as proxy Obliterators..some of the most hated miniatures of all time?

My bronze is actually GW Retributor gold as the bronzes always seem too wishy washy and lacking in pigment for me. A aggrax or sepia wash tends to make them more bronze looking and doubly so when finished off with a silver edge highlight.

Great work on the bikers here - they also seem to have started to fall to chaos much more than the infantry. Lovely work on the Plaguemarine as well, Theo is right - we haven't seen much action on the Death Guard side yet and yours is a really nice one.
