Any is a good starting point but here's what you need to know: Armies get bonuses if they're part of a singular faction, which you'll find by looking at the keywords in every warscroll. Dark Elves are found in Order. Theirs so many sub factions in their group that they are only allowed to be part of either Order or Aelf armies. Vampires are basically the entire Death Faction split into many many groups. Almost all factions with the exception of the Flesh Eater Courts Synergize with each other. Chaos Daemons are Chaos (duh), Which include the Skaven if you want ranged/a ton of bodies. Khorne and Tzeench currently have a book where they bascially pooled all the mortal and daemon units dedicated to them and gives them special abilities IF you have the army dedicated to one of them. Really though I would recommend looking at the store and checking each faction out. You can also see the Warscroll if you want to check on their stats and abilities. As well as keywords and such. Or go to your local hobby store and ask someone who plays the game and can give you a rundown.

I don't know much at all about AoS, but the timeless advice on 'which army' is to go first and foremost on the models. Look at a whole bunch of different minis and gravitate towards the army that makes you go 'wow cool' when you see the minis. From there work the rest out.

Daemons performing double duty for 40k seems pretty good.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Choose the army you like the look of the best. You'll have a lot more fun building and painting that way.
