Granted, it's always a good idea to keep unused bits for future use. Melta guns don't grow on trees, after all, and maybe one day you'll want to build an all-melta command squad to drop behind enemy tanks. But I'm getting to the point where I feel bad throwing away any bits at all, even those that are all too common.

Take heads, for example. Almost every GW resin kit has more heads than you strictly need. Unless you plan on building a big pile of severed heads in honor of Khorne, you're unlikely to ever find a use for them. So here I am, with a whole bunch of unused heads. And lasguns. And torsoes. Has anyone in the history of the hobby ever found himself lacking a Cadian torso? I doubt it.

I have not, to my knowledge, ever discarded a bit.

I spent a great deal of time stripping all my extra sprues of their bits and putting them in neatly labelled pots.

Thanks for the neat solution on what to do with my spare heads, though

A good bitz box is a great asset for your own hobby, but also anyone else in your hobby circle. There are about 8-10 of us in mine, and between us, most bit requests can be fulfilled. We must have saved a small fortune by not having to resort to ebay as often as we would have. So don't throw those lasguns or heads away, they may come in useful at some point.

The problem is when you also don't have time to take them off the sprue.

pfft, a pile of skulls - make a roadway paved with them.

As for lasguns, create a base for them and stick them barrel down in neat rows as a grave site for your fallen guardsmen. Maybe consider dangling some of the unused ammo pouches from them.

Also, enough ammo pouches strung together and filled with sand/dirt would make a good looking extra/ablative armour for tanks.

I can't help you decide what to toss, (I've never thrown away a bit in 22 years of gaming)
however I can make you feel less like a hoarder...my bits box is measured in Liters (and not small numbers like 1 or 2 liters ... or even 10 or 20)

Not only is my bit hoarding problem pretty top notch, but I hoard bits of anything that might remotely work for terrain or basing as well...

Ha yup. The problem I have is... I have so many bits instead of digging through the chaos to find a specific piece, I often end up just buying it again new from bit sellers.

I had to do that with my combi-meltas. I could not find the melta part for ages, so I gave up and ordered some online. Only after the day after they were delivered did I find all four of them.

Never. My handy black templet sword and such came in handy, I mean I had it years but that sword had a use in the end

Just because you not use em now. Does not mean you use them in a years time.

I don't have a problem, though I do suffer from the "I have a great idea but I only need one bit I don't have!...Annnnnnnd no one else has it! *insert your favorite curse word here* "

Expect for two cases of bitzs, everything is at least organized by army, and whether it's weapons, arms, heads, etc.

Speaking of which I do have a ton of bitz...and I'm in the market for a grey seer's head....so...I have IG, SM, Orks, and other odd things in there...be happy to swap... *walks off whistling innocently*

My problem isn't so much hording as an inability to use all my bits. For example, I just bought a Tactical Squad, to convert up using leftover bits from my Deathwatch and Vanguard Veterans to make a couple RPG based Deathwatch squads.

I now have 2 power mauls, 2 storm shields, 3 sets of lightning claws, 3 thunder hammers, a DW storm shield, various shoulder pads, 4 DW swords and bolters, 10 tacticals bolters, specials and arms, combi weapons and power fists left over, along with a couple of spare torsos and about 15 spare heads between the sets (including all the tacticals). This doesn't even begin to count my bitzbox at home. I also have basically no way to use any of these bitz without buying up a load of spare legs.

I may take all the spare heads for a Khorne base... maybe a Daemon Prince or Bloodthirster.

I too have excessive bitz

If you're feeling creative, building small pieces of highly detailed battlefield terrain can be a good use of spare parts. That, and fancy bases.

For example, I'm taking a bunch of extra lasguns and helmets and creating a "gun rack" of sorts, that will serve as a piece of scenario terrain/ammo dump decoration.

Never throw out bits though, when you're doing conversion work they are like gold. For my piles of less important ones, I keep them in a cup.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

I never even throw away the sprues. I cut them up to use as beams, rubble or even conversion fodder.

I waste nothing, neither bits nor sprue. I have bits from the 80's hanging around in some of the dustiest corners of my collection.

Really, the correct answer is that everyone should play 40K Orks in addition to anything else they play, if for no other reason that to use bitz in quantity before those stacks in your basement shift and kill some poor innocent who was only down there looking for a Philips Head screwdriver.

Another thing we could do in this thread - pride of place in you bitz collection is....

For me it's the five lead Rogue Trader Space Marine jet bikes I own that will eventually turn into a Scout Biker Squad. Eventually.

It's a shame that GW discontinued Black Gobbo. It had a lot of articles on how to effectively use your bitz to either stretch your forces, build terrain and objective markers, or in creative new ways that you might not have thought (the most ingenious one I remember was using the lictor's crotch as the face of a Greater Daemon of Undivided).
