So, I've been working on a Khorne Daemonkin force. Along came 8th edition and apparently GW has axed the army as a faction, but they assured me the same miniatures can still be used to build a competitive army. We'll see about that.

Anyway, here's some progress done. I decided to go with tabletop quality this time around, as my projects tend to die off if I start painting for a display shelf when a whole army is to be completed. I went with a clean look for this bunch:

Flesh Hounds

Herald

Bloodletters

Chaos Lord

Group

Our website has a bit more background and some tidbits on the technique used. Quick and easy.

Hope you dig. There's a gakton of more to come...

I love these guys, really. Especially the Lord on bike is a fun and creative conversion. Obviously these guys have been painted by a professional, they look simply great. The gold looks so much like NMM that it's hard to tell - it is actually metallic paint, isn't it?

Personally i think that the red on some models looks a bit too flat, it would've benefited from some shading or edge highlighting - but that's really just down to personal taste.

Thanks, that's very nice of you. I have painted... some, before. The gold/brass is indeed metallic.

It's true that more highlights make things stand out and pop. However, this time around I'm optimizing my painting in order to get a full army painlessly. I kind of have two modes to paint, all out, and fast and easy. There is (some) stuff with more effort over here. The point of these guys, I guess, is to just look nice on the table and prevent me from losing my sanity.

The blades those Bloodletters are carrying look absolutely amazing! I love the way the colours blend naturally into one another, that's really something else.

How did you do them - do you have a particular technique for getting that look?

Hey, cheers. There are two ways to do such a color gradient. I know how to do them both, however; one takes a lot of practice, effort and time, the other one not so much. The more difficult, traditional technique is called feathering/blending.

These blades are made with an airbrush (another factor that speeds up painting an army project - by a lot). Just best used when you don't go overboard with it. I first undercoated the blades red, then went over them with a pass of mixed red and orange, then orange, then yellow, then white and yellow, towards the tip. With some control on the trigger, you can do a somewhat flawless gradient. Note I don't quickshade the blades; the colour is too light and it would end up smeared.

They look pretty crisp and clean for a tabletop standard. However the lack of detail on the hounds is very noticeable (red eyes...red teeth, etc.)

The intent with the hounds was that their mouth/face is covered with blood completely (hence the smears on the fur also) but I guess it gets easily mixed up with the skin despite being a different red. The eyes are orange but admittedly perhaps white or yellow would've been better.

But ah well, they done, might return to them later.
