I am looking for a generic replacement for Mephiston red, yes I have googled it, yes I have found several, but all are other hobby ranges that cost $10-15+ dollars. Anyone know a cost effective replacement around $5? I need it to basecoat a battle company.

Army Painter sprays? Or a cheap red oxide primer spray. I'm sure VGC has a Mephiston Red alternative too.

Vallejo Game Colour's heavy red is probably the way forwards.

you're looking for a red spray paint? Not a brush on bottle?

I would look into the krylons maybe. I use their primers, when I can get weather to cooperate, but I've not specifically used a red from their range. You might test it - or another, like an auto primer. It may not match exactly. Otherwise yeah I'd go with army painter.

I have tried using VGC Heavy Red and Mephiston Red side by side to compare them, and the VGC Heavy Red is a tad bit darker and has a noticeably duller finish, whereas Mephiston Red almost has a satin finish. They are similar, but if you use them both on the same model or even on different models in the same unit you will be able to tell them apart.

Unfortunately, Army Painter does not have anything even as close as VGC Heavy Red. Their Pure Red is probably the closest, but it is noticeably brighter.

If you're looking for something cheaper than $10-15 a bottle you're going to have to nut up and hit the hardware store. Might be time to start just trying out bottles (which sadly means you'll end up spending more than you would buying the real deal).

Hopefully someone chimes in with a solution.

Yea, I am looking for spray paint, sorry for not mentioning that in the initial post. I think I will have to go to walmart and buy a bunch of Krylon and such. Costly to find a replacement, but cheaper in the long run

You are risking a bit on non color matching spray primer. the Krylon stuff should be fine though id test it out on junk models just in case first.

im sure you can get it to work with a bit of trial and error though.

I found this at Home Depot:

Who knows how close it's going to be once it's on your models, but I've used that brand of primer before with good results.
