I'm currently trying to make some fluff for my homebrew Imperial Guard, so far, their planet has two moons, they are a renegade military force that controls their entire system, and can't swing a dead cat with out hitting something that wants to kill them. The renegade part does not mean they worship chaos, they still hate chaos, they just really don't like the inquisition. They are led by one person who is charge of the guard and the navy, and have AdMech allies.. They have to deal with aliens and space marines, some of which are helpful, but more often not. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thx in advance.

BTW I chose the color scheme of charcoal/really dark grey but not black and red, because I like those, don't know if that's important.

Some thoughts of mine:

1 - are they actively at war with the imperium? Usually when systems rebel, the imperium sends in a force to dispose of the rebels. You might want a reason the imperium can't send in a reprisal force (maybe they haven't noticed yet, semi-persistant warp storm in the way, that sort of thing).

2 - traditionally the guard and the navy are separate entities to prevent effective rebellion. Also note that the guard/navy are generally equipped by forge worlds that supply them their equipment. There are exceptions of course, but in general your home system would need to be able to fabricate gear to support them, especially if they have ground and space elements which are different beasts altogether.

3 - admech allies could explain their equipment, the admech are a faction of the imperium and wouldn't necessarily care about a rebellion but their interests would need to coincide at some point. Also, see 1, if they're in contact with the admech then they're probably in contact with the wider imperium who aren't too fond of autonomy.

Idea off the top of my head:
they're vassals of the mechanicum, not strictly skitarii or cult mechanicus but allied and supplying/a source of something in exchange for equipment. They wouldn't like the inquisition as they're a rival imperial faction (wouldn't like the church of the emperor either) but they wouldn't necessarily be at war or waiting for a crusade to show up on their doorstep either.

Just some thoughts i had. Hope it's of any help.

Well point 1 is easily solved: the Dark Imperium in the new fluff

Point 2 could have the fleet heavily decimated in a recent battle, leaving the 2IC in charge, who was family to the imperial commander or something

I like point 3, maybe protection for Hereteks in exchange for equipment.

I would take Torga's advice, sounds solid.
