Intro

Time to rock a Paint Blog I guess, after an initial thread in P&M about a new Eldar colour scheme. But here goes a little intro.

Elves have always been my go to race to play in Fantasy games, and the Eldar of 40k are no exception. I've been tinkering with Eldar (Aeldari, now, I guess), since 2nd Edition 40, but with growing up getting a job, having a family.... it all went out of the window.

*Screeching wind of film* Rock on to 2017, 8th Edition is around the corner, and I have kids old enough now to be interested in playing this game with me Hurrah! So I took a dig round some of my old models and figure cases, and I found in near pristine condition 20 OOP Metal Wraithguard with D-cannons.

Needless to say I also think the Wraithknight is the coolest model in the entire 40K Range. So, MMhh. Ghost army? Or something more?

Inspiration

I dunno, I love Howling Banshees, and Swooping hawks too. Then I saw this video:

And I thought "Could do a fast painted Eldar army like that..."

Boom. Craftworld Nemisar was born.

Final Test Model

And after this thread HERE, I have my initial test model done (sans Bone Armour completed - just washed, representative of the finished scheme).

But what I love about this, is that I'm eager to play, not paint. So I figure:

1. Undercoat Army Painter Skull Bone
2. Agrax Earthshade wash
3. Base Coat Purple Details in Naggaroth Night
4. Base Coat Weaponry in Black
5. Base
6. Get Playing
7. Come back for this level of detailing later on!

Squad of 5 WG done in an hour, I hope.

Just waiting on a delivery of paint-in-the-can and some 40mm bases (due tomorrow), and these bad boys will hopefully be something Golden.

Well, atleast bone coloured.

3. Properly coated with Army Painter Skull Bone Spray Paint
4. 30 minutes dry time.
5. Undercoat patch up with AP Skull Bone paint.

More Progress last night. All shading done with Agrax Earthshade:

I'm now away for the weekend, but when I get back these won't take to long to get to my 'battle-ready' state, so I'm starting to think basing.

With the (eventual) light Bone, Purple and Black colours dominating, the traditional earthy type base doesn't seem appropriate.

So I was thinking of trying the Astrogranite Debris Texture Paint, Drakenhof Nightshade Wash and Longbeard Grey Drybrush for a "Nightworld" feel to the bases.

Any other suggestions?

Edit: I have some background fluff I want to write up for Craftworld Nemisar, where do I put it? Right here in the thread, or elsewhere on Dakka?

Ok, back from the weekend of Eldar-like debauchery (aka Family Wedding)

Found a couple of hours to continue progress tonight, however, so filled bases with Astrogranite Debris after deciding that since the basing requires drybrushing it would be better getting this all done now.

Some quick shading and highlighting on the bases tomorrow, and THEN we'll some colour on these bad boys.

Fast moving towards being game ready though!

Another evening, further progress on the bases.

The recipe is finalised now:

1. Astrogranite Debris texture paint
2. Drakenhof Nightshade Wash
3. Russ Grey Drybrush
4. Fenrisian Grey Drybrush

The idea is very similar to one I had for my Raven Guard that I painted, that of fighting across a moonlit night-scape or some such.

NOW I can get on with Base Colours

Update time.

Took me two evenings but I got through all the base coating for the guns in Abaddon Black.

You may also notice my first 'Game Ready' WraithGuard has rolled off the production line:

Thats three thin coats of Naggaroth Night to get that flat purple. The next step is going to take some time, but get through this, edge the bases in black and I have 15 'Game Ready' WraithGuard! Woot!

That's a good looking purple. I find for myself that getting the first guy done is a big relief, and helps me feel ok about tackling the rest of the lot

Agreed- I just wanted to get one to Game Ready state so I could see where I'll end up with these, and seeing one done amongst the rest helps keep me going!

As an aside, this is the first time I'm painting with a Wet Palette, which has been a real great experience for me so far. Not having my paint constantly drying on the palette has been a huge boon, and I'm really able to get the whole "multiple, thin coats" approach down.

Even if it does take three coats for Naggaroth Night. Le sigh

Fortunately, these will move up to Xereus Purple at some point in the future, which goes on nicely over Naggaroth Night. Onwards!

Ok, slacked over the weekend due to family commitments, but threw a couple hours into the next stage on Thursday last week and a couple more last night.

First two coats of Naggaroth Night applied across all 15 miniatures.

And I might have had a treat half way through to put the Farseer model together!

These need another coat of Naggaroth Night, a cleanup stage on the Bone to tidy the appearance and then the bases edging for 'Game Ready' state. Huzzah!

The Nermisarii Wraith Legion comes...

Been slacking (again) the last couple of days, but the Wraithguard are now all Game Ready, with the third layer of Naggaroth Night purple applied and the bases finished.

I hope this many D-Cannons scare people!!

3 Squads of 5 done, for now. I'm looking forward to getting back to these in the future to apply some proper highlighting and blending, but for now these get me a basic line of troops on the battlefield! Hurrah.

But we can't have Wraith units without a spirit seer ... and since these are done for now, its.....

HQ Time!

Ok, well, its started, and I mounted him on a 40mm base so that he looks a little more imposing than the standard base implies. Once the GS has cured, then I'll be able to base him with Astrogranite Debris and match him up to the Wraithguard.

Btw, I intend to go fully to town on this dude, not just Game Ready. I mean, its my Warlord (atleast for now!), so he deserves a little extra effort.

Awesome. I'm planning at least one more Wraithguard squad at some point. The plastic kit is quite good, and they were dead easy to paint last time. Keep it up!

Basecoating & Basing

Just a quick update on last nights progress after the previous update - I couldn't wait to get started with this guy, and spent a couple of hours sorting out the base (its a messy process) and getting the basecoating done.

Basing:
1. Shaved down GS to match the two different base heights.
2. Astrogranite applied to greenstuff
3. Basecoat the Stones under the feet with Russ Grey.
4. Drakenhof Blue wash all over.
5. Drybrush the Astrograntine and layer the stones with Russ Grey
6. Drybrush the Astrograntine and layer the stones with Fenrisian Grey
7. Edge highlight the stones with some Pallid Wych Flesh

Basecoats:
1. Bone colours repainted with 2 layers of Ushabti Boine
2. Purple done with 4 layers of Naggaroth Night (4!)
3. Staff and detailing done with Abaddon Black
4. Spear blade done with Temple Guard Blue

Next steps will be to get the face plate done, then the bone colouring.

The Farseer takes shape...

Two updates in one day! Woo me

Well, I was keen to get on with my Farseer model, and I've made a lot of strides. Unfortunately I left it a little late for taking photo's, so my lamp is making the bone colouring appear a lot more yellow in the photos than it actually is.

Looking nice, but there's definitely been some ups and downs with this today, the spear blade has been painted three times (the first two resulting in the paint being scraped off with a modelling knife) and I'm 50/50 about it.

Tomorrow will bring the blending of the cloak, hopefully, but I'm hobbied out for today

Craftworld Iconography

I've also started working on what my Craftworlds specific rune should be, and this is where I got to with a wonderful little free vector editing program called Inkscape:

This relates to my craftworld in three ways:

1. The Diamonds at the top of rune relate Nemisar to being the 'Royalty' of the Aeldari race
2. The Bar in the middle and the Lightning Bolts are to do with the craftworlds warfare style, embodying the use of the Wraith Legion as its battle line and its Aspect Warriors for lightning strikes against the enemy
3. The YingYang, traditionally an Exarch / Autarch symbol, is again another reference to Nemisar being among the leaders of the Aeldari race

There's a lot more background and fluff that I want to get into at this point, but suffice to say that Nemisar supports the last of the Royal houses of the Aeldari race is an important point.

I'll be evolving the symbol in the next day or two, and then looking at getting a bunch of decal transfers printed off via a service so that I can begin to use some Iconography on my models in the future!

What decal service are you using?

Your farseer looks really good. The purple/bone combination is spectacular and you've shaded it really nicely.

Cheers guys, its much appreciated!

I know I've probably been dragging things out with the basic paint job Wraithguard, but I needed some troops before I get on to the juicier stuff

Hopefully I'll have time to continue on tonight, I need to have a go at tackling the Purple blending, next.

I might give that spear tip its 4th attempt as well

HQ - Farseer Update

Done! (Well, done enough for now!)

I was in a rush this morning to grab a couple of photos, so the combination of natural daylight and lamplight has resulted in the photo's being washed out, but I was wanting to get something posted up to show you where I want to take the purple on my mystical little space elves (HERESY! Aeldari!). I promise to post a better photo later on!

The Edge highlight is a lot keener in real-life than in these photos. However, there a couple more steps I want to do in the future on this:

1. I'm considering a Genestealer Purple to White Blend on the weapon blades in the future. I think this would add some more contrast to the miniature.
2. Repaint the gems entirely. I'm not happy with either the depth of the colouring in the gems or the black gem mounts.

Still, its a fairly decent HQ paint job I'm happy to put on the table to play with, so no complaints!

Now onto something REALLY fun - My Wraithlord!!

Can I get it base painted before Saturday's 8th Edition release???!! Challenge on!!!!

The Wraithlord

Wrathlord proceeded very slowly, last night - mainly because it was my Wedding Anniversary

Anyways, I have an idea on the stance I want to use, but the base may take a bit of modding to achieve what I want.... I'll take some in progress pictures as I go, hopefully!

Two more nights of work before 8th Ed is released!

It's Wraithlord time!

I've been having a lot of fun with my Wraithlord arms, and just before I settle on a final pose I thought it worth posting a few possible poses for you guys to comment on.

Bit of a background: This Wraithlord, who is to be named, is going to be an assault themed Wraithlord - Ghostglaive, twin Flamers, and likely twin Shuriken Cannons for assaulty goodness in 8th Ed. So I wanted to push the basic kit as far as I can without chopping it up than the parts it comes in. Still, you can do some interesting things with a bit of imagination:

The arms are glued into place, but the head and body position are still to be chosen...

Right now, I'm leaning towards the left pose, but what do you guys think???

I'd lean toward the left pose. While the large head portion rotates, it's always looked weird to me whenever anyone models it heavily twisted/turned. Throws off the entire look and visual weight of the miniature.

Well, what a day! 8th Edition is released, I had my first (starter-ish) game with the Wraith Legion against my daughters Necron force, and had fun shooting things with guns that open miniature black holes to the warp. YAY!

1x Farseer with Singing Spear and Smite
5x Wraithguard
5x Wraithguard
5x Wraithguard
(PL 36!)

vs.

1x Necron Lord with Warscythe and Resurrection Orb
12x Necron Warriors
3x Scarab Swarms
3x Wraiths
(PL 22)

I then went and lost! LOL! My daughter lost almost all her forces to my relentlessly advancing Wraithguard, but her Necron lord simply hacked his way through my units and my Farseer when he was unleashed! And since she slaughtered the poor Farseer, we called it a Necron victory for our 'Slay the Warlord' game.

Loads of fun had, including me failing 4 times to pass a 5+ psychic test for Smite, and watching the Necron Warrior unit get up repeatedly on reanimation protocols.

Still, was very fun to be in the local GW store on release day, and we picked up the core rules and Index Xenos 1 so I plan my army properly for the future.

Revenge will be mine. Muwahahaha!
