This has been something I have been wondering since we first saw this info a week or 2 ago. Narrative play has a far more simple points structure - power level - allowing you to build armies faster and more fluidly to help creative narrative games with roughly balanced forces.

What are your thoughts on FW using this for Heresy - and only this.

As in they release an update for 30k and say "30k is about forging the narrative so that's what we have done - you now ONLY use power levels when building your forces to play 30k and use the narrative missions!"

Would this bother you?

It would bother me greatly, as we'd only see units with the most powerful upgrades + every other option they can take and nothing else.

You might, but I think round here Narrative will be the way to go.

For myself and my friends, we've all assembled our armies, so pondering over whether or not to give this sergeant Artificer Armour or that squad a plasma gun over a flamer is irrelevant. Much easier to just set a power level and play; the mental arithmetic is easier.

I don't know enough about matched play vs. narrative play (points vs. power levels). Is power level just "simple points"? Is matched play way more granular? Do you pay for every upgrade (grenades, chainswords, etc. etc.) in matched play? How do you "compute" the power level of a squad? If it's still points, just not as granular as matched play... then what's the difference? What am I missing here?

I guess I just don't understand the difference between the two. One is very precise with points, the other is "fuzzy points"?

Narrative isn't just games with less granular points. Frankly with narrative you can use any point value system or no points whatsoever. What matters is that you, logically enough, have narrative going on with the game. Story. That means basically rather than having generic list and going against generic list in random standard scenario you come up with narrative battle. This can be anything from simple scenario with power levels for quick one to detailed scenario with specialized forces which could even involve breaking up rules(under strenght squads representing survivors? Fair game! Also obvious example would be all drop podding marine force coming middle of enemy which in matched play is illegal army).

GW will likely officially support this with narrative scenarios but basically narrative allows full freedom for players to come up with interesting game with story to go along with it.

But point system itself is irrelevant. Frankly you can use both systems for both gaming modes and it's still same gaming mode at it's heart. Though albeit power levels at matched game is more odd combo than other way around.

Every single datasheet has power level in the top right corner. You're then told in the unit composition section "this unit may include 5 thousand sons (power level 18), 10 thousand sons (power level 26)," etc. The idea being that you don't pay for upgrades and little quibbles. This is to give you a rough estimate of getting forces to be equal, without worrying about the narrative breaking meltabomb on a sarge.
