Urge to give the robot a good push to test its balance rising.

Also I would question its emotion detecting abilities as these are complicated to calculate and have cultural variations that need to be accounted for.

That would be quite the skill; our human police officers have yet to develop that one!

Then there's the emotion thing. Wasn't there an anime about that?

This.

It'll be decades before robotics allow for police bots. The tech isn't there yet.

I believe the anime of which you are thinking may be Psycho-Pass, which features some weird looking, emotion scanning robots.

Even if the tech was there there's likely a political hurdle to get over to bring them into the general force as well.

That's it! I was blanking on the name for some reason.

Spoiler:
It wasn't the best show, but I thought the idea that they were making society at large a lot safer but with the side effect of making individuals with no ability to handle mental trauma was interesting. I guess with the one psychopath bad guy and the people with masks running amok they were building what could be considered a well-functioning but extremely brittle society.

As far as robot police go, I thought the ones from THX-1138 were both entertaining and horrifying.

I think that the technology for automating all kinds of jobs might advance extremely quickly, but at the same time I think that public resistance more than anything will hold it back.

Agreed. Not just with the general public, but within law enforcement itself in many areas. In some jurisdictions, where legal, agencies are unionized. And those unions have a lot of clout.

Can we just get robotic fast food workers instead of police? If we have an AI that can beat a Jeopardy champion it's got to be possible to make a hamburger and fries. I'd love to interact with a soulless robot instead of a person that seems like they'd gladly eat a bullet instead of actually annunciating.

You'd just be swapping a souless robot of metal in place of a souless robot of flesh, which tbf would probably be an improvement.

Skynet won't happen like that. The Age of Ultron showed us how it would happen; the robot becomes sentient, spends three seconds on the internet, and decides that humanity must be destroyed.

Oh it's going to happen if people keep pushing for massive minimum wage hikes. You'll see all these jobs just disappear. Fast Food restaurant human staff will eventually be comprised of 1 dude who has a degree in mechanics and customer service. He maintains the machines and cleans the eating areas/deals with any customer issues that need a human to fix and makes 80k+ a year because he's literally the only employee.

Running a fast food restaurant will basically become a pretty highly paid job, but each restaurant would only support 1-2 people.

You go through a drive through, you'll pull a touch screen on an extendable arm through your window and make your order. Then your food will be cooked and bagged by robot.

The machines aren't going to beat us by launching the nukes or building hunter-killer robots to run us down and dismember us. They're way too smart for that. They're just going to feth with us in small ways until we all go crazy and commit suicide.

I came to this realization the other day while I was running chkdsk on the front desk computer and weighing the pros and cons of completely losing my mind.

I'm thinking that even if they were to lower the minimum wage most fast food employees will end up getting replaced by robots and we'll end up with a situation like you describe. Humans are expensive and unreliable.

I think automation is in theory a really good thing that should enable humans to live better lives with more time to pursue activities that they find enjoyable, fulfilling and meaningful. I worry that we'll feth it all up, though, and that we won't be able to adjust. When it comes to the future I have a tendency to think that it will either be some utopian paradise or dystopian nightmare, but if I force myself to be more rational about it I figure it will end up being more of the same, more or less.

Yeah, automation has nothing to do with minimum wage. A machine requires a large up front investment and money for maintenance but works 24 hours, never needs breaks, is faster, is more consistent, and largely does its job without any oversight whatsoever.

And as someone who's helped operate a largely automated factory, that's BS. Machine breaks down, and Haas will get back to you once their automated systems select a minion to drive out to you and repair the machine.

Will take four to six months.

Dammit, you almost got me banned again with my knee jerk response for this. Here's a cleaner, nicer version:

What about MY contempt for these barely human subs who do asinine things like celebrate the closure of Ringling Bros dressed in furry suits? If they oppose my hunting of non-sapient prey, I'll be more than happy to hunt them. Hell, I'd have good time taking a 18wheeler filled with individually caged half starved predators, and release them into the crowd. Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY!

Having seen them torture human children for the terrible crime of visiting Sea World, I would not feel the least bit bad. As far as I can see, the difference between them and ISIS is a hijab.

I have extreme contempt for a certain type of animal rights activist. Not the guys protesting real cruelty, but the ones who's idea of what amounts to cruelty trails off into fantasy land. And don't get me started on the guys who think that any contact with animals or the keeping of pets is inhumane. The guys pouring blood on children seeing the circus, or blowing up/burning down people's barns at night because OMG DAIRY irritate the piss out of me. They're every bit as fanatical as ISIS, but they're get nice cutesy names like ELF. PETA has backed some of them, but have been careful about provable ties between Norfolk and domestic terrorists.
