How's your meta?
Growing! Seeing new players! Frequent events.
No change. Same amount of people showing up to play. Same tournaments.
Interest is waning. Less people playing now or playing other systems.
It's a dead game locally.

Just curious to see a "state of the game" where people live. I think killing the pressgangers program has had an impact where I live. There definitely seems to be less interest and no events. Meanwhile Age of Sigmar and Blood Bowl are picking up steam with small pockets of Guild Ball and Infinity.

I play:
40K: Daemons, Tau
AoS: Blades of Khorne, Disciples of Tzeentch
Warmachine: Convergence of Cyriss
Infinity: Haqqislam, Tohaa
Malifaux: Bayou
Star Wars Legion: Republic & Separatists
MESBG: Far Harad, Misty Mountains

Not much change here in the Phoenix, AZ, valley, but that's because it is already rather healthy with regular nights and monthly tournaments at the big stores.

The death of Fantasy Battles and people getting fed up with 40K led to it growing a little bit a few years back. Right now, it has Infinity and Dropfleet coming in from behind, with X-Wing being about neck to neck with it. 40K still has it beat, but not by much.

Its just friends right now, no store in the area does it
There USED to be, but the owner got tired of being the store that would bring in players then eventually leave.
He kinda killed it single handedly.

It seems to be decreasing a bit in my area. At the launch of MK3 there were probably 20+ people on WMH nights for the first 1-2 months. Since the PG program died, I believe it's about half that, but the same core players afaik (it's a very clique-y meta). Not 100% sure since I've only stopped by on WMH night a couple times since. The same clique has migrated to split time to Guild Ball, but most still pay WMH, afaik.

currently playing: Warhammer 40k: Kill Team

other favorites:

South east Queensland has great tourney turnout.
My town has gone from 16-20 players on warmahordes night to 6-8.
Theme lists, or more specifically fighting against some theme lists has killed interest in all the 'fun' gamers.
I am also totally burnt out, knowing in almost every local game I have zero chance of winning at end first turn.
Remove free points and replace theme list bonus with something else and it would improve a lot.

We got lots of new players when GW axed fantasy, and after that IT stayed high numbers. But after that new players are rare to see.

Dead locally, all but dead next town over.

Lack of pressgangers and an avoidance of WAAC culture has made it less popular.

I don't get that. WM is a competitive game. Yes it can be played fluffy if that's your thing. It's just not designed to be played that way.

Or are you speaking of the mentality of the WAAC player who gets mad at dice, blames terrain and net lists against you? If that's the case I totally agree.

Our meta used to be one of the largest in the country, with some 200 unique players in the MD/VA area. Now we're limping along, still getting OK turn-out to events, but nowhere near the level of activity we used to have. Mk3 was a great sales pitch for other games- X-wing and Armada have been huge in my area, and Guild Ball has really taken hold here too. A number of our players migrated to other systems.

Dead.
Sadly when Worthy Gaming closed the meta vanished in a heartbeat.
That said, I have seen some evidence of a comeback i the past few months, so watch this space.

Dead. Can't get a game going (this goes for other systems too, so WMH is just a symptom of this) at the FLGS. Feel like I'm wasting my time turning up and wasting my money whenever I buy something for it.

Really want to get the Grymkin box but at the rate it's going I'd be better burning that cash.

I'd say it's about half what it was at the start of third. Initially, there was a lot of enthusiasm for the game. A lot of people are switching to Infinity, Guild Ball, and even WFB. A couple like me have even taken up 8th edition from GW, and I haven't touched GW except to paint since I ragequit when 5th rendered most of my carefully converted Eldar army unusable.

Like divorce, there isn't any one reason people give up on a hobby. For me, in no particular order, these are the reasons my butthurt with PP got to a point where I just quit:

The models are hideous, and they haven't bothered to improve or alter them. They CAN afford to put out the good plastic, because they have done so, but for kits where they could make some real cash and give us some things we want, like warjacks, they don't. The models today look the same as the models of 15 years ago.

They are all over the place on their conversion and painting policies. Converted or amusingly painted models are randomly allowed or prohibited in tourneys. The models are nigh impossible to re pose.

Where the models aren't hideous, they're often lazy in design right from the start. Several of the models or sets of models introduced in third were lazy from the initial design phase. Satyxis Raiders, but with a weapon swap to pistols! Rule 63 Stryker! Twice!

The buy in I used to get from the fluff is waning, and the fluff doesn't match the crunch; one of the sins that drove me from WFB/40K. My faction of choice was Cryx for the undead horrors and zombies, and game balance has transformed it into the 'Horny Pirate Wench' faction. There are so many new and original directions they could go with all the factions, and they just keep banging away on the same themes and designs.

In one release all the thought put into new warcasters boiled down to: "Ah screw it, just take one of the existing designs and stick it on a horse."

My local meta punishes 'beer and pretzels' gaming. Creating a bunch of custom scenery to make an asymmetrical mission, or doing something just to have a bit of fun, is not acceptable to the PP community. I've been repeatedly refused games where the reason for the refusal was "I'm practicing for a tournament, and playing against you won't help."

They seem to be aiming their system and marketing at the 'whales'. The guys who'll empty their bank account to buy ten of the same model just to win a tourney.

It's just an expensive game that turns into meta rock vs scissors build/listhammer combined with a toxic community both on the official forums and in real life, combined with a balls-up of the launch of 3rd edition compounded by crappier models in restic that are expensive. The minis aren't worth their price-tag and the rules are bland.

Also 'LULWUT is terrain for $500 Alex?'

The forums really aren't that toxic since PP booted everybody out and made the forums new player focused.

Eastern PA here. It's been gradually dying down in favor of other games, especially X-wing. Infinity and Malifaux even managed to gain a reasonable foothold.
After Shadow War came out, people were going nuts over that for a good while, it got everyone salivating for some 40k again for the first time in many years.
Now that 40k 8th is out, seems like WMH is effectively dead outside of a few die-hards. Everyone who bailed on 40k in favor of WMH during the Kirby years is now coming back to 40k, at least in my area.

A couple weeks ago I would have said growing. But then the only store that hosted WMH had drama and now there is an angry gamer boycott that has left me high and dry for games...
