I was looking to add the Ultamarines Chapter Master to my army, Marneus Calgar. But why is his mini so weird and cartoony looking? It's like he doesnt fit in with the rest of the space marines at all.

Now i noticed that they sell another Calgar mini, which looks much better, but that one only comes with a squad and costs alot more. This one;

The first Calgar you posted is from the 90s. That's why he looks the way he looks.

I see. So why do they still sell it along side the newer model? And why isn't the new one being sold separately?

Because when the set that has the Honor Guard first came out only the Ultramarines could have Honor Guard, so they bundled them together.

I'd suggest taking a gander at eBay to see if you can find him on his own. It's where I look first for pretty much everything anyway.

My Armies
T9A Dwarves - 5-6K
T9A Ogres - 5-6K
T9A WoDG - 4K
A lot of Orks (WAAAGH! Ripjaw)
A lot of khorne marines and daemons (The Prophets of The Red River)
around 2500 points of Grey Knights (The 3rd Brotherhood "The Heralds of the Emperor Resplendent")

Have a look and see if you can get the metal version and not the Finecast. Finecast resin has issues with air bubbles and fragility, and the Terminator Calgar is a very very busy model. He also feels much better in metal due to the weight, very sturdy model and a joy to have in metal.

Yeh, I picked one up myself from ebay cause I didn't want to deal with finecast.
You will want to pin his arms cause they have a bit of weight to them and don't be surprised if he's missing the ultra emblem on his right shoulder with the ropes as that's a separate piece, as is the aquila on his left shoulder. It's not too hard to replace them if you have the upgrade sprue, mine was missing the ultra emblem so with a little cutting at the back and some pinning I placed the top of a banner there instead to still have it just without the ropes.

My Marneus Calgar is going on 8 years old now and never had him fall apart once. I did use the tiniest smidgeon of greenstuff along with my superglue which may be the reason, but Papa Smurf is pretty much my sturdiest model.

You could always kit bash him.

You would need the chapter master/captain plastic kit for the torso, backpack and cape

a mark 6 leg with an eagle on it (probably in the vanguard or sterguard kit, green stuff the tabards. then a right and left handed power fists and some extra boltgun bits

Looking for the Rest of the II Legion

So just to confirm, Calgar is alive but gravey wounded and Guillan is calling the shots as of 8th edition?

nope, Calgar is currently managing the affairs of the Ultramarines in Ultramar while Gulliman is on Terra running the whole shibang. Making Calgar now, effectivly a true regent of Ultramar.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Its First Captain and Regent of Ultramar (I think that title should be Calgar's though now) Agemman. He's not dead but "a shadow of the warrior he was." Either Cassius or Tiguirius suggested replacing him. Which sets up Sicarius perfectly to become 1st Captain, negates the "Calgar's unlawful successor" problem and sets "I, Cato Sicarius" up nicely to get a new mini and become "I, Cato Primaris Sicarius Ultramaxius"

+1 for kit bashing, more fun and you get a unique model.

As for what GW keeps 2nd edition sculpts around... It's probably the weird economics of it.

A special character figure takes more time to sculpt and sells less then a front line figure, plus these days it's super easy to kit bash anything you want.

Plus these days GW's new models are almost all plastic which means higher up front costs.

That's why people are playing with Abaddon figures (circa 1997) older than they are.

Well, i hope they'll come up with a new model of him, cause im afraid these will look silly in my army. Even more so, when the primaris marines come out.

The second one doesn't look that bad. That's a modern BA Captain for comparison.

I like Papa Smurf and think it's fitting that the underslung bolter on a power fist is featured in RGs 10k year old design too.

Seeing as Cato left Ultramar and travelled with RGs honour guard (which will be kit bashed Custodes/ Primaris in my army), the question might be whether or not Cato needs his job replaced.

Yeah, I'm expecting to see our first Primaris character be "Cato Sicuaras, commander of the Victrix Guard"
