Does anyone know if there are any "swear" words used by soldiery in the Imperium aside from those used in real life? The only one I've seen in the books is quite similar to a real curse word and as such would maybe get my models banned from events if I had my guardsmen paint them on their tanks. If anyone's wondering why I'm asking, I'm starting a Savlar Chem Dogs army and since they're a penal regiment, I think it would make sense for them to paint rude slogans on their vehicles, such as "Major Strucker is a -ing "

Thanks,
- ripjaw

Feth is used by the Tanith (but is actually not originally a curse word, but a Tanith tree god).
Gak is used in the same situation.
I think I've seen Fug used.

However, if your guys were a penal legion, do you think they'd get away with writing and graffiting their vehicles? Personally, if I were this Major Strucker, I'd have those men at act as the bullet shield for their newly repainted vehicle.

It could go both ways. On one hand, you would expect some commanders to inflict vicious punishment on the offending individuals. On the other hand you have historical instances of crews painting on their vehicles stuff like names and threatening slogans (i.e. "Happy Xmas Adolph" and "The Channel Stopped You, But Not Us"), which suggests officers turning a blind eye to such antics so as to not build unnecessary animosity between themselves and their men.
Examples:

But I get what you're saying about insults aimed at their CO. Perhaps one aimed at a fellow trooper, like "Private Peterson is a ing Idiot" would be better. Or maybe some crude squad insignia, a la the Lusthog Squad.

I believe something that -does- exist and is even somewhat tolerated ish maybe on a good day is strongly pro-imperial propaganda.

Like writing 'eat this xenos' on a gun barrel or something.

Well, for the French, some reference to the church, Mary or Christ factors in big to their curse words.
So some reference to the Emperor would be sufficiently racy.
I could see "Emperor's tears" being a possibility.
I am sure anything scary or disgusting native to whatever planet they come from would be the next choice.
Arbites, Sisters of Battle and genestealers may be the next choice.
Failing all that, go to Latin:
"deodamnatus" or "dammit".
"filius canis" literally "son of a dog".
"Vescere bracis meis" or "Eat my shorts" is a favorite.

By the Emperor this thread is awesome lol.

Quite unfortunately I don't really have anything productive to add... though the idea of using Latin seems like it could be quite effective.

I'd imagine Latin being more of a highborn style of swearing. Different worlds would have their own swear words so you could make up some slightly rude sounding words to use

swear words relate to the culture of the seapker, the french tend to use religion as their swears, english speakers tend towards bodily functions (we're weird!)

I imagine that many swears would be unique to their world. Imperium wide swears would likely relate to the greater religion, that said, given the nature of the IoM I could see cursing with the emperor's name being regarded as heresy. I could thus see curses like...

"To Horus with you!"

"Blood of Sanguinis!"
"For Gulliman's sake!"
"By the Fangs of Russ"

etc.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.

Feck, Frag, Feth... basically any sound that you can use for a F word

Gak.. or any sound like Crap..

with the wide variety of Local Derelicts within the Imperium there are a lot of options

Then you have your traditional religious base ones.. basically replace Jesus with Emperor or Throne

Of course if you wanna push your luck on ending up rather toasty n got good freehand. The sob pinup girl with a flamer on a maybe a hell hound, fw extra armour kit might help that

Bomber art done artistically is impressive, same with like dragons, crew names, aircraft names and such. visual identifiers like a chimera with maybe "my ass rides in mechanicus equipment "

Maybe also solgans on fuel tanks, kill marks on turrets etc.

My other rides a banebladeheck wanna get offensive on tanks within reason, battle sister.
Its the kinda stuff penal trooopers might paint on.
Depends how far/public you want army to be.

Honestly, it seems to vary from author to author and between planets. Personally, I imagine my space ANZACs using 'bl--dy', 'ba---rd', crap and 'wa--er' alot, as well as 'Throne' instead of God when it comes to swearing, sometimes even in real life. I also substituted 'Fokker' in as the f-word and 'Sacre' as the s-word.

And yes, I know those are actual words, which personally makes it funnier.

Dan Abnett uses a lot of swearing in his books. Especially since many of the characters don't come from the highest echelons of society.

"Throne" is a common one.

I think it was in the SW Asaheim book where one of the squad made reference to "Russ's hairy balls" as a statement of consternation - probably a compliment in SW company but heresy if said by a Guardsman.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Space Marines are more well spoken than the average Guardsman and so their curse words are more along the lines of invoking Primarchs and the Emperor, similar to "For God's Sake!" as opposed to "For F***'s Sake!" in the UK. Stuff like that includes, "What in Guilliman's name?!" "By the Emperor!" "By the Throne!" "Emperor damn you!"

Space Wolves are portrayed as super-typical vikings and much more crude. They can get away with baser curses such as "Russ's hairy balls!" and "By my arsecheeks!" as the greater sense of brotherhood and camerady in their chapter means that calling on Russ's hairy balls is not only a curse, but amusing to his fellows, and not at all insulting to his Primarch.

Saying that as a guardsmen in hearing range may end up with rapid head criticism existence failure depending on chapter.

Given how the Imperium is basically a Space caricature of medieval Europe (with other influences thrown into the mix), I would imagine the cursing would take after medieval Europee and be religiously based at least originally, just like how the phrase "bloody" was originally derived from religious phrases/curses.

The degree of acceptability of Imperial curse words would likely vary based on location and socioeconomic class. Anything too explicit or sacrilegious ("By the Emperor's dangly bits!" ) might also result in extreme punishment that might seem excessive by today's standards, but which would not be seen as out of place in a highly religious society ruled in name by their god.

Or ending up a human sister of battle toasted marshmallow.

What you could get away with on a hive factory and a shrine world would vary massively etc.
