Now I'm pretty sure Guilliman is overall better, but in terms of comparative points etc. who is more generically useful?

Id probably say Guilliman, as he buffs all armies of the Imperium as well as being a decent beat stick.

Calgar is easier to get him where you need him. Make of that as you will.

At least for the next 3 weeks.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Gulliman for sure. He boosts all your Imperial stuff (his Warlord Traits), while Calgar only gives a boost to Ultramarines (the extra set of Doctrines). As such, Gulliman is better as a more generic options. However, in an Ultramarine specific force I'd probably say Calgar, since that extra set of Doctrines will give you all the same rerolls for fewer points.

Guilliman provides passive army-wide buffs by just being on the table.

1. Reroll morale, fear, pinning tests.

2. Extra set of doctrines.

3. If you make him your warlord, you get all the command traits. So units within 12" of him get slicksauce buffs.

Honestly Guilliman isnt better than Calgar for an ultramarines army. Both actually give you an extra set of doctrines and if you look at what doctirines do - they basically overrule gurlymans warlord traits ecept for the +1 movement and move through cover (which are situational at best). Calgar allow you to pick your space-marine or rulebook warlord trait on 3d6 - Pretty sure this is better and 6 trash warlord traits Gurlyman gets. Calgar has an orbital bombardment too...

Gurlyman is unquestionably more killy but he is also extremely easy to kill because he can't hide in a unit.

Frankly - nether is very good competitively. In a huge points game though - I'd go with calgar because he can lead a huge deathstar/orbital/better warlord trait possibilities.

Gargamel has become my nickname for Magnus after seeing him lined up next to Papa Smurf RG.

In 8th RG will be better since he will get the advantage of being screenable by other Marines, and Calgar is getting evicted from units.

yeah, Gulliman in retrospect was pretty obviously a "preview of 8th edition" I suspect Calgar is gonna be similer in 8th with a "buff field" it also strikes me as likely both Calgar and Gulliman will give command points to their army

Hopefully RG works with any chapter. Then we can use the other HH Primarchs as "counts as" Guilliman.

your mind

The new Girlyman model is pretty cool IMO.
The old Calgar model is meh these days...
I would find Girlyman and cut him up and make him something special if I were gonna go that route.
But as far as Ultramarines go, I am with hobojebus on this one:
