Subject: Next step for Death Guard army?

So far I have
Calas Typhon
A pair of 20 man Tac Squads
5 man Heavy squad with missile launchers
5 man Heavy Squad with plasma cannons
5 Cataphractii with Lightning Claws
2 Contemptors each with a Kheres and CCW
A Sicaran with LasCannons
What's the next logical step? I know that I need to get a Mortarion and I'm working on it right now, but aside from that what other units or models should I consider? Oh and I much prefer infantry over vehicles if that helps any. Thanks a lot in advance.

How many points is that so far? I would add a unit of Grave Wardens or Deathshroud

It's right around 2k points. Which do you believe is superior, the Deathshroud or the Grave Wardens?

They play different roles in your army. Looking at your list right now, the Death Shroud are probably replacements for your lightning claw cataphractii and could accompany Typhon in a Spartan or Phobos. Grave Wardens are a lot of fun and can go into another Phobos or walk up the field. With their shooting attacks and flamers, and 1-2 chainfists, they are pretty flexible.

I would refere from joining Deathshrouds and Thyphon as he will take away their ability to sweep, cutting their CC abilitys down significantly.
As a unit for Typhon I would always prefere Grave Wardens, as they highly benefit from each other (Typhon not striking at I1 therfore helping the Wardens not to be mutual killed by other Terminators in CC, while the Wardens help out with flamer overwatch for Thyphon.)

Deathshroud have just been purchased. What next? Also, what seems to be everyone's attraction to the quad mortars? I've never seen one used in a game. Third question, would a Whirlwind Scorpius be a worthy purchase or would I be better off with something like a Deredeo (Dorito) or a Leviathan?

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Everyone has a raging hardon for phosphex quad mortars becasue they are the answer to everything in the game. (unless barrage weapons cannot fire at flyers) Read the rules for phosphex shells and shatter shells (the S8 ones) on them. Regarding your choices, all of those models are cool. The deredeo is a solid long-range support unit, think of it as a better contemptor-mortis dreadnought. All of the weapon options are solid. You may want the plasmas to deal with terminators and the like. Alternatively, the arachnus lascannon array can ravage heavy vehicles. The leviathan breaks things, but is also a fire magnet. It gains a lot from a drop pod and claw/drills. They can tear open a spartan and man-fight primarchs. Alternatively, leviathans can waddle alongside your infantry with a ranged weapon. Your current AC/DCCW Contemptors already do this though. The scorpius is a solid long range support unit. It does what phosphex quad mortars do but with more manouvrability. I'd pick up the deredeo to deal with any air support you see. Do you have a transport for the deathshroud? Do you have anything that can reliably damage near super-heavy class vehicles?

I do not have a transport for them yet, but I plan on picking up a pair of Land Raiders in the near future to cover it. What would you recommend I take to handle any of the tougher vehicles?

Im In an escalation league at my local shop and decided to start a deathguard army as well. I've had a lot of succès with my large tac marine squads, two leviathans and lightning strike fighters. I just finished my spartan, deathshroud and grave warden terms. I played a league match using 3 quad mortars with phosphex, and honestly I used the shatter shell the whole time and next game I didn't even bring them and ran the leviathans.
I've got 9 quad mortars and two medusas just for a fun narrative game sometime, but you won't regret some leviathans or even a deredeo.
As for super heavy vehicles, I've got a glaive and am looking at getting a fellblade, just because big tanks look so cool.
