Just an idea my roomate and I came up with that makes for a basic game very quick.

(Updated )Points :each unit /troop choice should be equivalent to other players unit. Example for heavy support 120 for a tank. Opponent dev squad 150 points. Some Point drift is fine.

Army comp.
1hq
2troops.
1fast attack
1heavy
1 elite
2 transports

"When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you know why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind." -Jiddu Krishnamurti world renowned champion of peace. Terrible idea.

For starters, a librarian as an example is not the equal to a Hive Tyrant.

Next, 10 hormagants is not the equal of 10 tac marines.

3rd Heavy could be anything from a biovore to an exocrine.

4th, the nids only actual transport is a flying biotitan that can carry gargoyles. Would you really want me to bring 2 of those for free?

This is just a single example of how this proposition falls entirely to pieces when you look at a single army.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

When did nids get transports? It's not really for nids. Your also supposed to mostly match points. It works great for us.

Imperial Armor 4. It's called a Harridan. You said the points limit was N/A. Ok try orks, 10 Ork boyz is not the same as 10 tac marines. etc etc... Try Guard 10 AM Guardsmen with lasguns is not the same as 10 tac marines, try Harlequins...

The armies are asymmetrical. The list building you are proposing only works with 2 armies from the exact same codex. I.E. it doesn't work.

Yeah were using marines. I.E it works. . Modify to fit your own needs.

Replace 10 man squad with Troops of your choice. Add apox point values. Minor point drift is fine.

Balanced enough for a game.

In our case. Each type of unit is approx the same value as the other player ish.

Stop worrying over the details and play a game.

40k has never really been ballanced maybe in 5th.

And chill out.

Interesting notion. but difficult to pull off without points. Looks like 'power levels' is GW's attempt to streamline the army building process in a similar fashion.

I'm chill man. No biggy for me. Was just saying what I saw. The idea as proposed is a bad one. It doesn't work. It's non function. I see what you were trying to do but mechanically this proposition does not do that. Back to the drawing board.

It seems... Fine? But nothing special. It's just a special force org chart and a note saying "Don't worry if points aren't perfectly matched".

Agreed. Doesn't seem like a terribly balanced alternative, but could be used for a new player's first few games to get accustomed to the rules.

Well don't know about you guys. But the game was fun.

Transports made the game enjoyable with the right amount of explosions. It felt very balanced but then again we both used marines. The game satified everything fun about 40k but kept it light. Quick in an easy to manage package. Transport was simple. Set up was easy.

I suppose you could always go over the top and bring an min max army. But that would ruin the fun. Try it if you have marines maybe guard tau or even nids just skip the transports add another something. All I'm saying is try it. Try to be fair. And don't worry overly much about balance. "You go to war with the army you have" The main rule is to have fun.

Try it out see if you enjoy it. Consider it a trial run for 8th open play.

What would you do to make Quick Hammer better?

No upgrades, all units are bought stock. That also mean no adding models.

No MC. No vehicles.

1hq
2troops.
1fast attack
1heavy
1 elite

That can probably accommodate a larger variety of armies with a more fair mix of units for a quick game to learn and enjoy.
