Hello everyone,

I have lurked around this forum for quite a while and for a long time it made do for me to keep up with the painting/modelling side of the hobby while I was not actively doing anything.
When I was a kid, I enjoyed building model aircraft and tanks and started with table-top gaming after I wandered in to a GW store around 1998/99, I was captivated by Lizardmen and Warhammer at the time.

This didn't really lead anywhere and eventually my interests turned towards 40k and I picked up the 3ed. rule book. Thinking I liked Blood Angels, I had one day mistakenly pointed out a Dark Eldar Warriors box to my mum on a trip to the shops. Christmas 2000 came around and I had my first starter army, Dark Eldar. Having no real understanding of their strengths or weaknesses, I collected my army and played regular battles with a good friend playing Orks. A couple of years later models were more expensive, interests changed and I fell out of habit with the hobby, so away my models went to collect dust for 15 or so years.

As with most people in the hobby, I was never totally removed from it. I bought a 4th ed. Battle for Macragge starter set and never opened it... Dawn of War filled the void for a while but it wasn't until I moved overseas to work that I started a more serious interest in getting back into 40k and expand into other games. I came to Beijing, China in 2013 and I guess with the new environment and lack of familiarity, I found myself following the hobby here and there, looking up the GW site or reading the occasional forum post. YouTube was fantastic in satisfying my interest and I began regularly watching battle reports and following the new armies etc..

At Christmas 2015 I visited home (Australia) and caught up with my childhood Ork playing friend and found he too was interested in getting back into 40k. Beijing has some pretty terrible weather at times (that keeps you indoors for days), so I thought some painting would be a great way to kill the time. My friend and I agreed to collect an army each and by my next Christmas visit at the end of 2016, we would bring our armies together and have our first game. With that, I took my Battle for Macragge set to Beijing and picked up a Start Collecting: Space Marines to begin a small Crimson Fist army. We played our first game of 7th Edition at the end of 2016 and it was slow.. but enjoyable. I was refreshed in taking a mature look at the hobby.

On a business trip to Germany, I impulsively bought about 2000 points of Dark Eldar Wyches for some reason and these are sitting under my desk at home waiting for 8th Edition.

I joined this forum in anticipation for 40k 8ed. and I plan to pick up the starter set and reimage my Crimson Fists with the Primaris Marines. Hopefully this is also the nudge I need to start with broader table top hobbies like Warmachine, Bolt Action or Frostgrave.. We'll see...

I plan to put together a P&M blog and will post pics of my Crimson Fists and Dark Eldar there.

Thanks for reading!

TLDR; I am getting back into 40k after 15 years. Space Marine Crimson Fists and Dark Eldar Kabal of the Bloodied Claw/Cult of Red Grief.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Thanks for the welcome!

Things are moving along, I'll soon have enough worth posting to a p&m blog. My painting skill as a 12 year old didn't quite make the cut, so I have picked out the first Dark Eldar warrior squad and stripped them, ready for a new life!

Hard to believe 3rd Ed was over 15 years ago, Yikes! Bolt Action is a very fun rule set, I would check that out next if you enjoy anything WW2. Welcome back to the hobby, and welcome to Dakka Dakka.

Thanks, I was a bit impulsive with the purchases, but I'm not a big fan of seeing the same armies repeated in YouTube batreps so I have taken a gamble with them. I think I am much more oriented to the fluff and feel of an army than outright performance so when I saw the new Death Guard I already started to formulate ideas in my mind haha ouch my money...

I've always enjoyed the feel of the Chaos armies and I really likes the look of the Genestealer cults. So there's a lot of "maybe one day" out there...

Yeah it's funny to look back on the bright primary colours everything was painted with back then and compare them with the style now. I think the bright blue and yellow of the ultramarines is what put me off space marines for so long...

I'd be keen to check out Bolt Action, though in Beijing all I can find are the army books, no miniatures unless I find proxies and other people to game with... I do like the randomness of the turn sequence though.

Beijing is a funny place, there seems to be a lot of things that come and go, I know when I was first here there was a wargaming store and a couple of places to find miniatures... Now seems a bit sparse, theres a GW in Shanghai but I'm not there so often. These forums and YouTube have made a huge difference to keeping my interest in the hobby and explore new things like skirmish and other larger scale games.

Next step after I get a respectable army together is to try and find some expats here to cut my teeth with!
