Hi all,

Returning to the hobby after 15 years! I have never been one for tabletop warfare, it's more the modelling and painting that interests me. Originally I started out doing LOTR after Deagostini and GW teamed up. Being a massive fan of the books/films I found it awesome and at the time was the only "art" I ever excelled at, never being able to draw or paint freehand I did however have a very steady hand and a decent eye for detail. I still have the majority of my former army including every hero in metal as well as a Balrog and original Nasgul in a box somewhere at me Mums...

So I'm in Bromley just around the corner from GW (for any SE Londoners who may reside here on dakka) and have been in and out for years browsing and I think sod this, time for me to start this freight train again...In Warhammer 40k, a branch I've always wanted to explore and did briefly when my brother showed an interest about 12 years ago for all of about 5 hours.

So I pick up a basic Space Marine set with basic 3ml paints, a couple of brushes and some misc tools and what not and I head back to the missus...who even though she thinks I am a massive nerd/geek/child encourages me to do things I enjoy despite being 9 months pregnant (And currently overdue)...so I go back the same day and buy a bit more...2 Weeks and about £600 later I have an awesome little setup, original Dreadnought, numerous Ultramarines and the Triumvirate of the Primarch in the post...and I've painted 2 models (I'm an Engineer with little time to spare) but for me just reading all the lore and watching videos of people bring such an awesome amount of detail to these models is very satisfying, and inspiring...Currently setup and ready to finish a basic Ultramarine but wanted to sign up here first as I've lurked for about a week now. Playing with edge highlighting but the super small detail brush I bought and christened just yesterday is splitting and I'm finding it difficult to use...

Anyway I could waffle on all day, but it's great to be here and I look forward to learning new techniques from anyone willing to help me out' which seems like everyone!

Thanks guys!

Hey Jim,

I'm in the same boat, in for a penny in for a pound. What did you get the for your setup? I've spent hundreds on space wolves (my favourite childhood army) and brought a lot of really surprisingly good and cheap MDF terrain (ttcombat), but I haven't picked up a single pot of paint. Like you I have precious little time.

It's amazing how much better the minis are nowadays isn't it. The kit bashing, the astounding level of detail, the different poses. And back in the day painting was so basic for us, I was considered a Michelangelo because I use washes and had the idea of tidying up with the base coat colour again afterwards. Now we have the edge highlighting, dry brushing, blending, and airbrushes!

What direction with your Ultramarines are you going? My Space wolves are being geared for close combat, lots of assault jet packy troops, (because they look cool) Thunder Wolf cavalry, and I've got 3 flyers. Daunting to even glue together, let alone paint.

A youTuber was talking about these amazing new all plastic fine detail brushes. Google is not helping me much so I'm going to have to do rewatch the videos to find out the brand. Although I'm sure someone here can help you.

I literally started from the ground up so I bought all tools required, about 10 brushes in GW but the quality is very poor, they started curling and splitting literally minutes after using them. In addition I bought about 40 Citadel Paints, case, new lamp...

In terms of models, I got three basic Ultramarines, Space Marine Tactical Squad, an original Venerable Dreadnought and I have Triumvirate of the Primarch in the post (Delivery failed today despite being home at the time of attempted delivery so not happy)...

Definitely impressed with the detail these days, way back when the metal models ended up having more material fall off opening it In terms of techniques they all seem to of evolved as well, I thought I was an absolute don when I did washes and dry brushing and my friends were painting in block colours...Now there are so many great techniques, different paints...I've spent the past couple of weeks just watching videos, again a resource I didn't really have 15 years ago (27 now)...Not to mention there are so many differently options of customisation in sets now as you mentioned. Direction wise I'm sticking mainly to the box art at the moment until I really get the hang of painting again, then I can start experimenting.

As far as terrain goes, I would like some small tiered terrain purely for display purposes. I love the Space wolves to the point I went into a shop looking for the Wulfen which just looks like an absolutely badass set but they had sold out!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
