What do you guys think of Smite? The ability to deal mortal wounds seems pretty powerful and there are cheap options for spamming psykers to cast the power.

It is very powerful, but against massed infantry (which is what 8th looks like) it will fall flat on its face. you wont be doing many wounds vs if you took equivalent points in troops etc.
The attack can be denied flat out, negating the damage. While armour saves will negate damage from troops etc, I would imagine a greater proportion of wounds will get through.
Against elite armies like GK etc it will be good, but otherwise, play a normal army.

It seems bad to focus on since it will auto target the closest. But atleast it gives your phycers something to do with how little they can do now.

Or spam heavy weapons as you no longer need troops.

I agree that smite suffers against hordes but there are cheap options I think to help with that. Consider the Guard for example, using three detachments you could field 10 primaris psykers, a knight, around 150 conscripts, 3-6 commissars, 2 company commanders, 2 basilisks, and a manticore in 2000 points. That's a lot of firepowere to thin those hordes out or to target snipers with.
I'll have to try this out and see how it performs.

Deepstriking a bunch of sorcerors and then smite them can look appealing...but the cost (per wound inflicted) and the risk of not getting anything (if not a dead psyker) is so high that i think you are better served by spamming combimeltas :(

IIrc, in 8th Edition, each power can only be cast ONCE per Psychic phase, not like 7th when each Psyker can cast each power once per each Psychic phase.
So you at most smite 7 times in each game of 8th. No way to spam it

Smite is the specific exception to that rule.

Smite is the exception to the single cast rule. Each psyker may cast it. The other powers are single use only.
Looking at the supreme command detachment allows me to bring 5 HQ slots. Primaris psykers are 40 points each, so 200 for the detachment. With one detachment I have the potential for 5D3 mortal wounds, maybe more maybe less depending on dice and denies. I can mitigate the perils blow back using commissars.
Against hordes, yeah they don't care much about mortal wounds but it's still damage in another phase of the game. I like to do as much damage as often as possible.
Like I said, it'll need to be tested on the table.

It says it in the power description.

I'm looking at the power description right now, and it doesn't say anything about it being used multiple times a turn. Edit : Oh I see, its under the match play rules. "With the exception of Smite" Yeah ok, smite spam is possible then, as every psyker knows it now.

Yeah, I knew I had read it in the rules. I don't have the book memorized yet. But yeah, I think it has merit.

I actually did psychic math.
For Rubric Marines and stock CSM Sorcerers, even against Conscripts, you will, on average, do more damage than you take from perils, pointwise.

To be fair, it's only a 1/18 chance of hurting yourself. That's not terrible.
And again-you win on points if you're targeting CONSCRIPTS. There's plenty of more valuable things than them.

LMAO you didn't do the math right then. Average you will kill the Sorcerer and 2 rubrics and EVERYTHING with in 6" will take D3 mortal wounds. If you have 3 units of Rubrics 6" apart from each other and the one in the middle goes you lose 6 rubric marines and 1 Sorcerer 160points from a single Perils not to mention you cripple your own army. If you bring and Exalted Sorcerer (although I don't know why you would) perils and die, your taking 140 points with you on average. Assuming you roll exactly 18 times per perils you get 17 opportunities to deal damage, 17*3 = 51 points to your 160 point loss. If an Exalted Sorcerer does from it, then its 180 points loss to the 48 points of conscripts killed.

I didn't know you did d3 mortal wounds to nearby units too. That's not something I can really account for in the math, but can definitely affect a real game.
That being said, I was talking about a barebones CSM Sorcerer, not an Exalted. Ignoring nearby units, it's accurate.

I think it will work well in armies with lots of psykers built in, like GK and Tzeench, but otherwise probably not.

As far as I can tell, Smite will also let you blast enemy units that are in combat. You're not targeting a unit, it's just hitting the closest visible one. So if you're setting up a Smite spam-type list that could be a neat trick.

How many points are we talking about in some of these versions of smite spam? I mean on psykers. Everything depends on the points. There's nothing wrong with the threoy of spamming mortal wounds causing stuff, but a lot depends on what you have to screen that stuff and how many points you're spending on the spam itself relative to what else you could do for those points. Lets get granular gents.

A melee flyrant will get in the face of his target, smite charge and start cutting it up. Then do it again next turn because you can cast powers while within 1" now. Even if he dies to perils he will take enemies wirh him.

Average seems to be 100 points for 1 caster, so at 5 casts that 10 wounds and 500 points.

A primaris psyker is 40 points. You can take five in a supreme command detachment for 200 points. You could take two supreme command detachments if you wanted to and still have plenty of points left over in a 2k list for other stuff.

I play Tyranids, and I am currently considering Zpanthrope Smite spam, because they can "Super Smite" (2D3) and with an Upgraded member, they can "Leech life" to heal D3 Wounds when Smithing. Being Infantry with Fly I might be able to Deep strike them someplace...(?)

I can't find the single cast rule this thread is referring to. A given psyker can only cast a power once, but there's nothing stopping someone from null zoning three times with three separate libbies.
