so how the rules are worded the flesheaters can just summon models and add them to the unit. Well im in a game right now where he added the models but made a congo line with the summoned models essentially extending the unit 13 more inches. Is this legal?

Ask to see the specific spell, it may be worded like this one:

Summon Vargheists has a casting value
of 6. If successfully cast, you can set up
a unit of up to 3 Vargheists within 18" of
the caster and more than 9" away from the
enemy. The unit is added to your army, but
cannot move in the following movement
phase. If the casting roll was 11 or more,
set up a unit of up to 6 Vargheists instead

if he is doing "muster men at arms" he only gets a couple models. but he can extend them out so long as they are 1" away.

I know I’ve used placement tricks with the 1d6 skeletons I get back every turn from the banner.

Dwarves shooting you up as you shamble across the table? Take the casualties from the back, and place the new guys towards the front.

Chaos Knights doing an end-run around the giant tarpit combat in the middle of the table? Add a chain of guys stretching towards them, and then pile in to suck them into the fun.

Lots of little fun tricks to be had.

I was playing a game (mortal nurgle) against some undead and skellies were in combat with some plagebearers I summoned to protect an objective. I removed a casualty carelessly and he started bringing back models in a "hole" I created by removing the one plaguebearer. I kept killing skeletons but whenver he generated more.. just kept extending the line right towards my objective. I couldnt kill them fast enough and he won because he denied my objective for a single turn...

Yes this is legal and very tactically smart.

You can create a line, but in that picture the models are obviously further apart than the 1" required for coherancy.

You should have kept summoning more Plague Bearers to counter his skelies. I actually summon Plaguebearers and nurglings to often tarpit my buddies skeleton horde while I take my slower blightkings around to take on his tomb guard. Sometimes you have to tarpit the tarpit

Summoning daemons would be new units that'd have to be 9" away. The 'summoning' he is referring to here is the skeleton banner that returns d6 slain models a turn. What he could potentially have done is elected not to attack the skeleton unit and thus prevented him from bringing back slain models into a new position.
