I realize there was another thread for this but it's super old. I've been playing long war a lot and eventually noticed an announcement.

It says 'Xcom 2 the real war begins'. So are the aliens coming in force, are we getting cthulu swamp monsters and why does it look like an Elder in the picture (with an Elder insignia)?

Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Edit:

Woah this sounds BA.

Gonna have to hurry up and finally finish a Long War run, it looks like...

Hey, we've got Nolan North killing our dudes! And rebel Advent, I figured they'd work that in eventually to dovetail with Apocalypse's hybrids. Looks awesome, I'm loving the idea of Resistance factions and a sort-of Nemesis System.

Just thought I'd drop these pics in here while we're waiting.

Spoiler:

Now, what could he be shooting at...?
Spoiler:

Thank the Great Commandy One for Shredder and Chain Shot.

The run's going pretty well, I've gotten past the Blacksite and am gearing up for the Psionic Gate. Most of the havens have been contacted and I've teched up to power armor/coilguns. The only worrying thing is that I don't have any facilities on my map for easy point removal and there's a nasty troop buildup happening outside my liberated regions...They'll invade sooner or later, I just don't know when!

I think i may take a break for a while from long war 2. Just got handed another horrible defeat and another wrecked campaign. I was doing insanely well and then one or two missions and bam the whole game becomes like a lost cause.

I'm playing 2nd hardest difficulty on long war 2 on ironman. I just can't get through this. Best i ever did was get to like november with coilguns (which are awesome btw).

Eeesh. I can beat Vanilla (and old-school A Better Advent, although the revamp that was inseparable from Better Pods Plus was far too much for me) on Commander difficulty, and there's no way I'm going that high on Long War. Veteran for me, thanks, that way I can enjoy the depth of the strategy layer without curling up in a ball and weeping.

Just beat the gate recovery mission, which is a bit of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, the Berserker Queen was there, and now I no longer have to worry about her, thanks to pouring the entire squad's firepower into her. On the downside, the entire squad was wounded during the fight, they were some of my best people, and now there's a UFO trying to hunt me down...time to see how good the upgraded defense matrix is, I think.

Coilguns ARE awesome! I'm just chewing through Chryssalid drones like they aren't even there. Thing to note - their poison appears to be incurable without a medkit; that is to say, it doesn't go away over time. Thanks for the timely evac, Firebrand. Other thing to note - MEC pods are obnoxious. I hate them so very, very much.

We've finally reached it. After years of joking that devs will eventually charge people for bug fixes, we finally are here.

Ah that sucks for those affected. Sometimes in game development there are issues so deep it would take a huge amount of time to fix them in an engine instead of just starting from scratch.

If this becomes the norm for companies then I will be right there with you. At the very least you should be entitled to a refund.

My xcom 2 experience was flawless for the record.

All that aside I'm super hyped for the expansion! Wubba Lubba DUB DUB!!! Can't wait to try Reaper and Templar. I wonder when gmg will release the code so I can start preloading.

I too am waiting for the pre-load. Rather shocked it hasn't started yet since the game comes out tomorrow and i've already pre-ordered it.

I'm excited for the advent converts (skirmishers?) and the templars. Somehow the cloaked snipers don't seem to do anything too interesting i haven't seen before.

Edit: Game is available to download (you may need to refresh steam). Mine is fully downloaded. Sadly i must work tomorrow so i'll keep it to cutscenes. I'm gonna twitch stream this too.

There's apparently enough added that, with a little more, it could have been a whole new game. I've gotten enough enjoyment out of X2 that I'm pretty sure I'll get more than my money's worth with the expansion.

If I have any troops left after Nolan North gets through with them, anyway. He put two in bleedout before I could chase him off, and now I have to deal with the rest of the strike force attacking the Resistance haven. This is my fourth mission. It's gonna sting a little.

Yeah, this isn't new skins for your troops or a new mission or two. This is legit content that adds immensely to the core game.

Well worth the price to me.

To put it in perspective, this is basically the XCom 2 version of Enemy Within for the original game, which added cyborgs and mutations, new aliens, a new set of story missions - including a base defense mission, an entirely new enemy faction, and new mission types to fight against that faction. Enemy Within was worth the cost, and there's every reason to believe that this new release will be as well.

It is a full on expansion not simple dlc. I got to play for an hour so just got to the new stuff now. Photobooth is fun.

Doing a commander/ironman run. No deaths so far.

Destroying the advent monument went off flawlessly with no wounds or deaths.

I got a squad wipe in the assassinate advent commander mission. Was doing well evading and then one patrol barely saw my group. Not used to all these multiple levels of ground to cover and enclosed spaces. It's incredibly hard to adapt to with what i used to do. The assassinate commander mission sucked because i had like 3 groups find me all at once. Playing Long War so long has definitely thrown me off somehow.

Other than that i played the super long reaper and skirmisher meet-up mission. Dragunova was badly hurt but nobody else died or was hurt. Then mox just gets auto captured so that sucked.

Troops getting tired makes this game much harder and more obnoxious. It makes a bit of sense but it's very frustrating.

I'd play more but i have to sleep soon.

I got a solid 2 hours of gaming in last night with this expac.

The addition/adjustment of "civilian rescue" missions are pretty neat. Some of the civvies will actually defend themselves now instead of just turtling up for the mission. Early game, they are able to effectively defend their position and kill Advent troopers with little to no problem. I think they actually killed more than my squad of 4 did. Later in the game, they might be effective at skimming some HP off of the higher end enemies, so they should remain useful, even if its just for spotting.

Also just rescued the former Advent character who was captured in the scripted event that introduced him. Was a fun mission of hide and seek where I skirted the perimeter of the installation and blew a hole in the back of the building. Some dicey moments with getting spotted by patrolling troopers, prior to that, but got their unmolested. Picked up the KO'd captive and Firebrand put up the pickup point right behind where I was. Decided to have a go at the waves of enemy getting shipped in and killed about 8 enemy to get my dudes some extra XP before we took off.

Haven't really toyed with the new soldier classes, and haven't met the Templars faction yet, so looking forward to doing that. Just got an "Assassination" mission which looks to be different from the previous "kill/capture this civilian" and take off.

Almost got wiped by the first Chosen enemy at the rendezvous mission. Definitely a unique challenge. Looking forward to meeting her siblings.

Loving this expansion. Well worth my money.

Yeah, the earliest Chosen encounter appears to be the most difficult so far (fought the Hunter twice and the Warlock once), since you're likely totally unprepared for that scale of enemy at the very beginning. I actually had to rescue the bare minimum of civilians and have my surviving two troops bail in the first fight. I've had one of those missions where the Resistance fights alongside you and it was a lot of fun - they almost killed one of my troops after the Warlock mind-controlled her twice and she started shooting civilians. Lucky for her he decided to go into Stasis when he did. The Resistance Ring is a lot of fun, too - there seems to be plenty of ways to reduce the Avatar counter in there, which is a huge help with how busy the strategic layer is now.

Haven't had anyone captured by the Chosen yet, but it's probably only a matter of time.

Good, I still almost killed the Chosen during the first encounter, it just got dicey for a turn or two. I grouped up all my dudes to cover all angles (I didn't read the "no overwatch triggered" skill it has) to cover all angles and got owned by her wave attack. All but one of my dudes was stunned for what seemed like forever.

Oof. That's a rough skill for the Assassin to have. It's on my Warlock, but he doesn't seem to move a whole lot anyway.

They're still quite challenging, but it helps when you know what to expect.

Well after about six hours of gameplay and a few grey hairs later, I can definitly say that I am not overly pleased with the new expansion. BUT that being said I like a whole lot of it too, having murderd the mele assasin once under a supply run mission and finding it taxing to deal with four pods of Advent and a whole hordes of the Lost. But the feeling of watching my troops raep the rewards of said mission was goooood.
All in all I think I need to really invest time and effort to find this new game in the Xcom series as appealing as the vanila game

On a sidenote, the Chosen are damned pushovers once you get magnetic weapons and solid armour, I find it somewhat odd that they take so litle punishment. At least the Assasin and the warlock. but granted I have not meet the other two at this moment

You say that now but wait until they show up on the wrong mission and have gotten stronger. They are always getting stronger.

By the time I took down the assassin on commander/ironman she killed 2 of my people on her mission and almost got my Reaper too. I lost 3 of my best soldiers.

I think this expansion is easily bringing xcom2 up to 10/10. I didn't really care for X-Com 2 defaults balancing too much. Also it's so ironic. Where as beaglerush (famous in the x-com community for his skill) was able to cheese strat X-Com 2 and thrived now in WotC he can't make it past gate crasher. Justice.

Now I am the one thriving in this new crazy meta and before I was doing absolutely terrible in the default game.

I don't just like it because I'm winning either. I've gotten my ass kicked a lot and I've learned to have a rotation of soldiers now instead of one super squad.

Oh Skirmishers suck man. Easily the worst class in the game. Snipers are pretty weak too now. Two worst classes. A single sniper is okay at supporting a team, but eh not that great anymore. The skirmishers... I don't know what they were thinking no damage output at all no survivability and tons of mobility to get him into trouble.

Templar are so OP though it's not even funny. I also like Reapers a lot.

My thoughts on class balance. I'm about to hit plasma and build the black chamber thing so I'm pretty far in.

Templar > Ranger > Reaper > Specialist > Grenadier > Sniper >>> Skirmisher.

Ironically, it's my Reaper who's lagging behind - although she got an absolutely beautiful Remote Detonation on the Warlock a couple missions ago. Funnily enough, my MVPs last mission were a sharpshooter (gunslinger build, but still!) and a Skirmisher; it was a retaliation with an absolutely disgusting number of Berserkers. Their ability to keep bullets flying at the enemy turned what could have been a squadwipe into a success. Skirmishers definitely need a way to boost their ammo before they get good, though. Autoloaders or expanded mags ASAP. Once that happens, they're great at flanking medium troops, or you can give them Zeroed In to hurt heavy stuff. Whiplash seems to deal a hilarious amount of damage as well, although I've only gotten a chance to use it on a turret - looks like it'll fry a basic MEC, at least, which isn't bad for a free action.

Templars are definitely vicious, though. I've only had a couple missions with mine, but he was easily a standout.

I agree with spinner. The reaper though nice with it's conceal reveals for the assassin doesn't seem that great other than the explosion. Yes the gun is really accurate but it's irrelevant when you just use nades to blow through cover anyway. Also the strength of each shot leaves much to be wanted. The skirmisher is alright but it depends. The electric ripjack is amazing vs bots (one hit kills em) but i might wish for better melee which is still ok. I also got a nice detonation with a reaper vs the assassin. She basically did double damage and took down like 2/3 of the assassin's health. Killed the assassin like twice thanks to her.

Honestly though the various new classes seem fun (haven't tried out templars yet). They actually don't seem that OP by a long shot. Perhaps that will change the more leveled up they get.

Btw i still have Mox but the reaper chick i started with died in an awful mission. Gotta say those chosen do a lot of damage. Currently the assassin i can handle easily but that sniper one attacked me as i was attacking other dudes. Almost took him down and then he just kept shooting my guys and gaining health. Didn't help i didn't have enough nades and he kept going into full cover that mission (tree trunks i think). I almost lost a guy the first time i fought him. I would have if he didn't steal intel and vanish.

I think skirmishers are alright. I boosted hp and the double shot is nice. I think part of the skirmisher's point is to use nades considering some of their skills (no action cost for a nade or similar) but i haven't really done that yet. Skirmisher melee is decent too for the pull and the get yourself to a target (which i think is a single action). The electric ripcord/jack is pretty good though. It's on the level of combat protocol when both the gremlin and ripjack are at tier 2.

Killed my first Chosen, the Assassin. Was a fun one. Lost 3 of my dudes to kill it, but now I get to research her katana and rifle thing. I probably should've waited til my guys were a bit stronger, but she was annoying as heck.

My "Alien Hunters" missions aren't popping up, after scanning the downed aircraft that gets the ball rolling nothing comes up to go on the mission where you enter the cave and meet the Viper Queen. I got the initial couple of unique weapons, but nothing else. "Shens Last Gift" didn't have this issue, in fact I dropped into that mission and saved before I hit the sack last night.

Anyone else have that problem, or does the game think a Chosen and Alien Leader popping up in a mission at the same time would be too much and I'll have to wait til I kill the Chosen? Hope that's the case.

Edit: NVM on the Alien Hunters mission, it just popped up.

My assassin has explosive immune and overwatch immune. But she's brittle; so takes extra close range damage. Was how I managed to beat her the first time.

My avenger got shot down early on, they threw a pair of berserkers at me. I was lucky I had the magnetic tier shotgun and rifle!

My Templar has gotten hurt every mission she takes part in. Though, the last time I did run her in to melee a purifier! Though she at least performs when she is out, the snipers... well, other than the Reaper, they have all performed poorly.

Rangers have probably performed the best for me, but I'm pretty early in.

The order to not start timers until I drop concealment has been a god send, though, and I like that the covert ops gives the bench warmers something to do. I probably have a more varied roster than I ever have in an xcom game.

The +2 to mission timers is absolutely needed for officer assassination missions. So incredibly helpful.

I actually think i know what skirmishers are great at now. You see there are 2 really good things with them far as i can tell so far (not counting nades). You can grapple to an enemy or pull them out of cover (keep grapple available when doing this). If this uncovers another pod grapple to an area in cover and shoot the enemy while flanking them if possible. Electric ripjack is great (free action that at tier 2 does 12 damage possibly going through armor).

Most importantly skirmishers are really, really good at killing a lot of lost if tooled up correctly. The have one ability where per kill they increase movement by 2. If you get yourself a superior expanded magazine, a superior auto-loader and aim boost on the skirmisher they become awesome. Kill 6 dudes and free reload and then move up about +12 movement only to do it all over again vs a bunch of lost is amazing. Also even if you do miss one of the shots it's no big as they can shoot twice if they don't move. In fact skirmishers might also be good with hair triggers since double shot is a thing. Not to mention 6 damage on tier 2 skirmishers on tier 2 melee weapons means if you have bladestorm and they hit they auto-kill most lost that close into melee range with them and they're quite the killing machines.

Seriously skirmishers can become very anti-lost hordes. I think it's worth it for you all to try using them on any missions with lost.

The chosen strongholds seem to be in there but not much else.

There's definitely more variation with multiple ground levels. Before you'd only have buildings with multiple floors and some places with multiple levels in woodland but now cityscape and sewers with multiple levels. As well as having some indoors missions with the chosen. Then you have to deal with the lost which means grenades are generally a bad idea. Chosen and alien rulers fighting you constantly can be annoying and the rulers tend to guard alien facilities now.

Killed all the chosen. The Assassin was by far the hardest one - the rest of them I killed fast enough that I could one round them with a ranger with the Assassin's shotgun.

Up until last night I rarely used my Reaper, she just seemed redundant with my Sniper.

Just for kicks I leveled her up and discovered the ability to shoot at and keep shooting at a target until its dead. Then move on to the next one and repeat until out of ammo.

Gold.
