Hey there everyone. Like the title says I just started getting into tabletop wargaming, specifically 40k and AoS. I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my first army, a 1000pt Necron army, but I've honestly found that I lost interest in them.
Right now I'm doing research into how I want to build a Black Templar army (By far my favorite Space Marine chapter) and I'd eventually like to piece together a Sisters of Battle army (Favorite group in all of 40k), just the immense cost of SoBs is putting me off of them.
As for Age of Sigmar, I got the starter box last week and plan on taking my time piecing it all together and painting them so I don't get horribly burned out on them like I did with my Necron army since I need to have them finished for the 8th Edition release event my local hobby store is holding. Later on I'll probably start on a Death army because the skeletons and ghosts are badass.

Ahh, another fan of the SoB! Welcome I keep hoping that they'll put out sisters in plastic, but I was fortunate enough to get my hands on some models back in the day before they became so hard to find.
What part of Louisiana are you in? We have a pretty decent crowd here in New Orleans and there's a crowd on the Northshore as well. If you're in the area, I'd be happy to guide you to a group of friendly players.

Welcome. I'm getting together a Black Templars army too. Do you know if GW is going to discontinue Them? The models are exclusively sold on their online store and they don't have a dedicated codex for them anymore.
Black Templars were rolled into the Space Marine codex a few editions ago. They had their own codex back in 4th ed.
I don't think you have to worry about Black Templars being discontinued, they were a major part of the fluff leading up to the release of 8th edition. They are also one of the most popular Space Marine chapters out there.
Realistically they can't be discontinued unless GW decides to discontinue the Space Marine line, which would be financial suicide. If anything, I can see them being expanded upon model wise.
They key to Black Templars is lots of assault. Terminators, Crusader Squads, Bikes, Assault Marines and Land Raiders. Lots and lots of Land Raider Crusaders.
Black Templars are not the competitive choice, but they are the cool choice.
Damn, this thread has me wanting to re-start my old Black Templars army.

AoS is pure garbage
Kill Primaris, Kill the Primarchs. They don't belong in 40K
40K is fantasy in space, not sci-fi
What is the best way for Kottery and me to paint our black templars. I have the old Painting Space Marines guide from back in forth edition. The white looks blotchy and my line highlights look devastatingly awful. You can see them in my gallery.
Paint the main model black, and then do the white shoulder pads separately, that way you don't have to paint up over top of black all the way to white. You can use GW primer paints in Black and White this way too.
It also depends on what kind of black and white you want to do.
Your black seems fine.
If you want a browner type of white, or greyer type of white you can search ways of obtaining those kinds of tones.
Also use multiple layers of watered down white, rather than thick layers. You will get better results.
I airbrush my stuff, but If I were to paint them by hand I would use:
Black:
-Abaddon Black base coat.
-Drybrush the entire model Eshin Grey
-Wash the entire model down with Nuln Oil
-Edge Highlight specific raised areas with Dawnstone
Brownish tone White:
-Zandri Dust base
-wash with agrax earthshade
-drybrush layer zandri dust again
-drybrush layer ushabti bone
-drybrush layer screaming skull
-drybrush thined down layer white scar
-drybrush thined down layer white scar again
-and again if needed.
-add agrax again in the crevasses of the shoulderpads to add depth if needed.
Straight White:
-Ulthuan Gray base
-watered down nuln oil wash
-ulthuan Gray drybrush again
-Multiple thin down drybrush layers of white scar
-add watered down nuln oil again in the crevasses of the shoulderpads to add depth if needed
