Few friends of mine and I are looking for some good coop recommendations / multi player games.
Ruling out FPS's as we've sort of been there done that.

Any genre really will do. There will be 4-7 of us depending on the night. Prefer to stay away from sub based games ala Warcraft etc but wont rule them out altogether,
thanks!

If you guys don't mind playing 4x strategy games, Sins of a Solar Empire is pretty fun with a bunch of friends. As is the Dawn of War series and it's sequels DoW2, all great fun as far as MP is concerned.

Grim Dawn and Torchlight II are great Co-op games as well.

I take it back, I can suggest one at least. It's 2 players though.

Orcs Must Die II. Fuuuuuun shenanigans.

Well you have Gauntlet. That's a four player dungeon crawler. Designed for 4-6 players.

7 days to die if you like 'builder games'

Elite Dangerous if you like space exploration games (and then Star Citizen when it is out).

Stellaris for 4x gameplay (or Civ [insert version])

Total War for no resource strategy gaming.

And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

I second this if it's just the 4 of you (although there are mods to increase the number of players). The old Rainbow Six Vegas games (2 especially) are also quite good for 4 player coop, like payday 2 it requires a bit more thought than run and gun.

I've personally had a lot of fun with playing Serious Sam with a large number of players, same can be said for Half Life Sven coop.

As for none FPS games, Total War ain't bad but I ain't got much else (unless you want to play a relaxing game of Golf with the friends).

Saints Row 2 and beyond are pretty good for laughs and action. My favorite is actually 2, the Insurance Fraud missions are about the most fun I've had with a friend in years.

PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is supposed to be fun, but I haven't personally played it. I have friends that really like it though
Duck Game is actually a lot more fun than it looks
Men of War: Assault Squad 2
Earth Defense Force 4.1

It also has some pretty money grubbing devs iirc, seeing as PA:Titans released and PA was really buggy still.

On topic,
Sanctum 1 and 2 were GREAT. Fun mix of an FPS game with tower defense.
Borderlands 2 was the best of the series imo
Deathtrap if you're looking for ARPG style tower defense
Grim dawn/Torchlight 2 if you want good ARPGs
Total War: Warhammer is hands down the best of all the total war games
Terraria is still one of the best games ever imo
Starbound is like terraria. Not as much fun imo, but it has a SCI-FI setting if you like that more.
Saints Row 3/4 were great.
Payday 2 is fun, but does require some looking around for builds if you want to move up to some of the harder difficulties
Orcs Must Die 2 is a great co-op game
Magicka (1 being better than 2 imo) is a lot of fun, especially the more people you get
Left 4 Dead 2 is still amazing
Killing floor 2 is a pretty decent game, but I find it really shines when you only play with friends instead of randoms
Dying Light is a TON of fun, the park our system feels amazing, and the melee combat is fast and fluid.
Dead rising 2: Off the record was a lot of fun too
Rainbow six: Vegas games are a lot of fun, very good 3rd person tactical shooter.

Of those, only killing floor 2, terraria, and starbound (I think) supports more than 4 players.

If there's 4 people I'd say Borderlands 2. It really shines when you've got 4 people running around shooting crazy weapons and weird looking things.

I know you said no FPSs so something like Rocket League, FIFA, Magicka or even Minecraft can be great.

More party kind of ones would be Starwhal, Gang Beasts, Castle Crashers or Genital Jousting.

Depend on how much down time you can tolerate, but Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilizations are fun to play hotseat. I probably could not handle playing them co-op via internet though.

What about Baldurs gate, I have never actually played a multiplayer game of it, but I am sure it is possible, or Neverwinter Nights?

Undercooked is a lot of fun and should only be played multiplayer. Mercenary Kings is fun with others as well. Friend and I are doing an Icewind Dale: Enahnced Edition playthrough co-op and we are having a blast.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Helldivers - 4 Player dual stick tactical shooter with some harsh friendly fire rules, which makes teamwork even more important.

Towerfall: Ascension - 4 player versus arrow shooting, but they added a coop mode against monsters that's pretty fun.

Divinity Original Sin, and Divinity Original Sin 2 (in early access). Both games are traditional long format computer RPGs, top down perspective, turn based combat, but can be played cooperatively in multiplayer, with each player able to have their own responses in dialog scenes, even making choices that conflict with other players.

Mass Effect 3 is superb on the PC, though one should be clear that its co-op is not a campaign, but closer to what you'd get out of Rainbow 6: Siege's terrorist hunt. Still very fun.

Speaking of...

Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Siege. Terrorist hunt is amazing fun with a friend or three, with some decent variety in gamemodes, too. I think it counts as co-op as far as I'm concerned.

Outer Space, Apparently

I'd recommend Vermintide to you; think of it as Left 4 Dead but with much more interesting and varied gameplay.

Not that L4D is bad, but Vermintide is like its second coming in Warhammer Fantasy form.

I'm surprised nobody has recommended Tabletop Simulator. You can get a bunch of great party games on there that will suit when you have more than 4 players, since most of the games mentioned will only cater to 4. I've also been sinking a tonne of hours into Armello, a digital boardgame for 4 players, which I highly recommend.

Sanctum 2 is also a rather... interesting experience (it's a Tower Defence/First Person Shooter hybrid). Not sure if I'd entirely recommend it, but if you're looking for something different, you might want to try it.

I've also heard very good things about Offworld Trading Company. Unfortunately I haven't tried it, mainly because my relationships with friends are strained enough through Armello, and I don't need another brutal multiplayer strategy game at the moment to make that worse It also supports up to 8 players, so that would cover your pack of friends if you're all looking for something to play.

A subscription free MMO that you all could play at once would be Eternal Crusade, but I would argue that it's less of an MMO and more of a squadfight game. I also wouldn't recommend buying anything in it because it really isn't a great game the majority of the time (in fact a lot of the time it's bloody awful). I reckon it will be fun with a lot of friends though, and since it's free (and 40K) there wouldn't be any harm done in trying it.

Hope that all helped!

Lovers in a dangerous spacetime is really fun as a coop game. Also very cute.

Civilisation 5. True story. I was playing with some family and friends and completely dominated a game as Venice and won a diplomatic victory. Heck I even put sanctions on people out the ass for the lulz lol. Anyways when I won.

When I won I said this.

Sidenote:
I realize you were "ruling out FPS"...but I have to, have to, have to recommend this:

It's basically a tower defense game mode. I've ceased playing the other Titanfall MP modes in favor of this. The campaign is no slouch either(but no coop).

They're planning on adding more of the MP maps to the Frontier Defense playlist, but they're balancing the enemy compositions to match the map style and so it's taking a bit. We get our second set of maps tomorrow, bringing the map count up to 7(3 new ones tomorrow and 4 currently).

You can probably play Total War: Warhammer as a co-op game if you want. Not sure on its max number of players... though the more players, the harder it is to do co-op unless it's a lot of players helping one player win.
