I'm looking to do a new chaos army with the arrival of 8th ed. Problem is I don't know if I should wait. With the new death guard models and space marines I am just not sure if they are starting to phase out all the old stuff and make new bigger chaos marines. I am just worried I'm gonna spend all this time collecting to just be replaced by newer better models. So should I wait? If you have any thoughts or info on this please let me know

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Vigo. Spain.

The Chaos range has many tickets to receive some actualiced kits for things like Havocs and the basic Chaos Space marines but... who can know?

Maybe they pase those kits in 3 months, maybe in 4 years.
Buy the models you like even if after them they release "better" ones. Thats how this works.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Yep. No clear picture of the meta, unclear how much will get added, and there's a decent chance CSM will see some updates, having the dubious honor of some of the oldest Marine kits.

If I were you, I'd hold off unless you're not concerned about competition or new aesthetics, or you're mostly just interested in Thousand Sons (since their line is new and almost certainly not seeing anything gutted in the near future). It's obvious we'll see some plague marine releases, and there's a decent chance we'll see more in the nearish future

I see no reason to hold off. Why would there be Primaris CSM? If you really want you can convert some Primaris to CSM of your choice

Plague Marines are likely to be phased out for newer stuff, which, given the teasers, also includes Terminators and Daemon Primarch, so if you specifically like the Lord Nurgle I would hold off on them for the time being.

On the other end of the spectrum, Thousand Sons likely won't see anything for them for the foreseeable future considering they just had a major release.

As for the rest, I would probably hold off on them. Currently the Cultist kit lacks even the basic options (especially with DV being gone now). Terminators don't have enough options to outfit the entire squad, basic CSM squads lack options, and so forth. Most people are already looking to the loyalist range for stuff so model wise I wouldn't buy much of the Chaos stuff outside of Daemon Engines and vehicles.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I see no reason. Start slowly. Get some of the new death guard. Convert some traitors even using primaries why not. Get the models that you like and start building. Don't worry too much about the so called meta and idiocy like that. If you want to be a tournament winner then I guess just take your credit card and wait for the next best spam list to hit the net but this is a terrible waybto be in my opinion. Get on eBay for some dark vengeance cultists. Some dark vengeance chaos marines. Get the new chaos dudes from the new box. The new drone is cool! Start collecting. Start playing and painting and slowly build your army.

I would wait or begin your collection with things that are not likely to be updated. The dino bots are fairly new, and the thousand sons are also pretty new. I would stay away from things like Havocs, and the older cult troops if you don't want older models. I imagine chaos will get new models very soon, as they have some of the oldest models in 40k

It's almost certain that the cult troops will all get new models, 1k Sons got them already, Nurgle are practically guaranteed new Plague Marine and Termie models, Khorne will probably come next with their own troop and termie models, and then hopefully Slaanesh (but as per GW the past several decades) they could get overlooked and forgotten about.

I'm not sure about regular CSM and termie models, they need updating but how long that takes is anyones guess. I think GW's priorities are elsewhere right now.

For now you can convert Primaris models as truescale CSM (would be a good project), I considered using them for Alpha Legionaries due to their size but I went for 30k upgrade kits from FW instead. You could try that yourself, use 30k legion upgrade parts to model your CSM. If you get FW leg bits or use some of the newer box sets (I'm using Burning of Prospero for mine) then they stand taller than the older marine models and look much better.

Thanks a lot of the advice! I'll probably use the new death guard to paint, but I'm really liking word bearers. They are always how I pictured chaos. I'm big into fluff

If the play testers are correct, the deathguard are in a bad place, combined with the fact everyone wants to primaris marines, means in two weeks you'll see entire deathguard half of the box going for sub 40 bucks on ebay. The prices are already dropping from their pre-release high of 80 bucks. So for that alone I'd wait at least two weeks. Primaris marines are also getting goodies first, so for the deathguard it might be late july before they get a lifeline, so that's the absolute soonest they get good. Once mortarion comes out it will swing the other way, he'll again be late july or august.

My advice wait two weeks, then pick up the deathguard.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.
